NETWORK BROADCAST ▹ VIDEO;

[ Jim's staring seriously at the camera as the broadcast begins, concern visible on his features. He might be easily recognizable to most everyone on the Fleet, but as soon as he starts talking, it will become obvious that he is not the same man, or at least not having the very same memories. Not of this place, that's for sure. ]

My name is James T. Kirk. I'm... not entirely sure how I got here, but for what it's worth, I'm one of the new arrivals.

[ He presses his lips, glancing around. ] This isn't the first time I've been brought to a universe other than my own, but I was wondering if anyone else here has had a similar experience. Coming here from a place that's not your reality of origin.

[ A pause, ] Specifically, has anyone here heard of Riverview, or the Quarantine?

[ He can't help a hopeful look. A familiar face, any familiar face, will be welcome. He's looking for a specific one, admittedly, but he's not holding his breath on that one. ]

ACTION ▹ SS RED FISH

[ Once he makes that broadcast, he'll be exploring his new location, so he knows what he's dealing with. He can be found roaming the ship, poking his head into all the nooks and corners, and possibly trying to sneak his way into off-limits locations, if there are any. Stop him getting into trouble, or help him? Or just come say hi to a not-quite-new face. ]

Smart of you. [ It's a good thing to remind himself of. Not that he ever did know Taako that well, and he never spoke to him aside from a couple of conversations. ] Someone like you would be an asset to any crew.

[ Credit where credit's due, and Jim believes in complimenting people for their strengths. Just... don't brag too much about it. ]

Yeah, it's entirely possible that's the case, though there might be some sort of malfunction with the system in place. Replicators could recreate any kind of food you could think of. If they got stuck on something specific, then it was definitely because something was wrong with the system.

Tell that to the First Breath.

[He's more than earned his keep there though. And he knows Loki knows it, so he's not all that worried about losing his place. It's mostly just complaining to complain - a Taako speciality.]

I think it's more likely that the Atroma just don't give enough of a shit about us to give us real food. They revel in us suffering their protein junk. Cutting corners in food production forces us to go out and hunt or barter or whatever else. Makes for better TV, I'd guess.

I would, if I knew who they are.

[ But for now, Taako can just take the compliment as is. Though Jim has a feeling that Taako's current captain and crew must value his skills immensely, considering what their dietary alternative is. ]

Oh, good. That sounds just like my notion of fun. [ Dry sarcasm. ] Just hoping someone on board my ship can cook, because I'm practically null at it.

The God of Mischief Loki, the space elf Haggar - don't tell her I know her name - the dwarf engineer Tyrion, and the newest addition: the vampire Akeldama. Lord Akeldama. I guess he's kinda fancy wherever he's from because he reeeally insists on the title.

[There's his introduction of his crew. Save them from their own lack of taste buds please.]

You're on the Red Fish, right? [He's pretty sure that's where the transmission is coming from at least.]

Ah! I do know Loki. Or I knew him before, anyway. He plays mean, but he's secretly nice. Well, a little bit nice.

[ Kind of a softie at times, though God forbid Jim ever says that to his face. He could end up getting turned into a frog or something. Yikes. ]

For the moment, yes. But I'm putting in a transfer to another ship, the Heron.

Pfft don't you daaare tell him that. He isn't exactly the menacing type, but the old stories tell of all sorts of shit he can do to you if you're out of his favor.

[It's one of the reasons why Taako likes Loki so much - other than the fact that he was a paranoid, innocent little shit as a kid. Never hurts to have a god - or three - on your side.]

Ah if you're going to the Heron, you'll meet Lup then. Looks like me, cooks almost as good as me, but not quite the Taako original.

I'll tell him whatever I want, he'll just have to deal. [ He purses his lips and shrugs with a casualness that probably shows that he got along with Loki just fine before coming here. ]

I might have to try both of your cooking and judge for myself. [ He cants his head. ] Do you also do pastries and cakes? The Taako I knew before, he had a cute little pastry shop.

[Taako raises an eyebrow at that. Good luck having that attitude with Loki, my dude. It'd be sad to see Jim's handsome face turned into a toad, but it could be veeeery amusing, so he leaves it at that.]

Natch. Pastries, cakes, tarts, cookies, macarons, macaroons, scones, pretty much everything. I don't have much to do here but cook.

[And mess with the fabric of reality, but that's a side gig, really. He doesn't like hearing about "the Taako I knew before," though. It smacks too much of what Lup tries to skirt around, and he makes a face.]

Whatever deals or discounts some other version of me had with you though - it's null here, my man. Sorry, but no memory means no freebies. [A beat] No offense.

[ That's Jim for you, he likes playing with danger, and to him it's hard to have any other sort of attitude around Loki. He's done the whole careful and cautious act once already. Now, he's confident that he knows enough about the god to get on his good side a little more easily than the last time.

Either that or it will go disastrously. One way or the other, fun times. ]

What? Oh, no, I didn't have anything of the sort. Like I said, we only spoke a couple times, and that was a long while ago. It's just... [ He trails off, then lets out a soft sigh. ] I'm getting married. Thought I might need to find someone who could eventually bake us a really nice wedding cake.

Whoa, for real? You've been here like what.... how long?

[That's fast? Must be someone he knew from before?]

Bu uh, yeah I guess I could. I mean, congratulations and all that jazz! First, I guess, yeah, congrats! Already doing catering for one wedding so why not another, right? You guys got an idea of what flavors you want or do you wanna do a tasting or something?

[ Jim actually laughs at that, then shakes his head. ]

A few days, but we've known each other for longer than that. We've actually been together for ten months.

[ Which, granted, he realizes isn't that long for some people either, but it's definitely longer than a couple days. ]

Tell you what, I'll get in touch when we actually start planning things. So we don't steal any attention from the wedding that's happening before ours. [ He pauses, ] Oh, and thank you.

[Well dunk. That's a hell of a thing.]

Lucky you then to have come where she or he is again. With all the realities out there, that's a pretty slim margin you managed to squeeze into.

[But the offer sounds agreeable to him, so Taako nods.]

Yup, yup, just hit me up. It's not like I've got anything else to do here. [Although hopefully Taako won't be around forever. He's got plans in the works and things to do in order to see them succeed.] And you're welcome. You can thank me for real with coin - or credit, whatever the money is here - whenever the order comes in.

The odds were negligible, I'm well aware. Victor would say that's the power of true love's magic.

[ Jim can't help a soft chuckle at that, shrugging. Victor's a very firm believer of that, and Jim has to admit it's rubbed off on him a little. Kind of hard not to give it some credit, at the very least, when they've both managed to find their way here. ]

We can meet up and agree on adequate payment, later. I'll make sure to get in touch once we start planning things.

[Wait.

Victor?]

Oh shit, are you telling me you're dating that nerd in the Heron's lab???

[They didn't have a great first meeting. Sorry, Jim.]

[ To be honest, that isn't terribly disappointing to hear. He knows Victor can come across as a little abrasive at times. If anything he'd be surprised if he got along with everyone he knows. ]

I'm marrying that nerd in the Heron's lab, actually. [ Yes he is a nerd, don't say it like it's some kind of insult Taako!! ]

[Yup, okay, great. Taako is now entirely conflicted about doing anything for Victor, even if it means screwing Jim over.

But Victor had been a real snob about sharing his knowledge about dimensional travel and had snubbed magic, which was kind of Taako's whole deal.]

Well, that nerd slighted me so I'm not exactly feeling charitable toward him. You? Sure. Him? Eh.

That's... too bad. I mean, technically it wouldn't be charity, since we'd be paying you, but...

[ He shrugs, smiling a little apologetically. He knows Victor can come off as a little abrasive at times, and he doesn't get along with everyone, but there's not much he can do about that. ]

I can't force you to like him, obviously. But I can suggest you give him another chance? He's not that bad, once you get to know him.

[It's the principle of the thing, Jim. Victor snubbed his cookies once. Like hell he's going to let him snub a whole damn cake when he has to conjure half of the ingredients.]

Tell that to your future husband then. He turned his nose up at my food in exchange for something as small as information. He could've had it all, but he's cursed you both now.

[ Which is why he doesn't apologize for Victor's attitude, because he knows it'd have to come from Victor himself. So instead he just makes a mental note to talk to Victor about it, and maybe the doctor will consider talking to Taako and clearing the air between them. ]

I'll talk to him. Not just because I want that cake, for the record. We can figure out some other solution for that. [ It's a shame if he can't get the nicest cake for their wedding but it won't make the occasion any less special. ] He can just be a little... tough, on a first encounter. And he's a little cagey about certain kinds of information, even if he does have his reasons for it.

I mean, I wouldn't knock you for doing it just for my cakes. I make some hot diggedity damn good desserts.

[But his ego was bruised when Victor refused him, and again when he didn't seem all that upset about missing out on some really good cookies. And Taako is nothing if not selfish and capable of holding a shitload of small petty grudges just because he wants to.]

Honestly it's probably my fault for trying to be nice. I've let the losers here influence me too much. He should count himself lucky I didn't cast Charm Person on his ass.

There's nothing wrong with trying to be nice, so don't blame yourself for that.

[ Jim presses his lips, wondering how much he can say. ]

I wasn't there for that conversation so I can't say for sure why he reacted that way, but... there are some things he just doesn't like talking about with strangers. Even stuff that might seem commonplace to you. It doesn't excuse him being rude to you, but it might be that you just touched on a sore subject, is all.

[ He smiles a little, tilting his head. ] Let me talk to him? I'll see if I can figure out what was up with that.

[He scoffs.]

I have a finite amount of shits to give in a year and I'm running up on the end of them. Gotta be choosy or I'll run out of niceness before Candlenights arrives.

But I'll leave it to you. You're his fiance, after all. I hold no hope that he'll come around, but good luck anyway.

[ Jim smiles a little, resigned though not yet defeated. He does have a little more faith in Victor, but then Jim does know him a whole lot better than Taako does. ]

[He's not one for niceties, but if he likes one Jim, he'll probably like this one too, so he's feeling a little more charitable than usual.]
