[His smile softens, though he's no less inclined to answer her questions than before.] Ah, that's not quite the same. The funeral parlor was my business when I came back to London. Better than going to work for someone else, and it was right up my alley. My original employer were the gods. I was a grim reaper in my world.

[He tilts his head.] Does that title have any meaning to you?

[He waves a hand at her as if brushing it aside, something silly. But it's not like he doesn't fit the description when he was reaping in earnest. Or when he was retired. Or sometimes even now.] Aye, that's the impression most people seem to get. It's not all like that, but that's back in the day. And anyway, those are your questions and those are your answers.

Very likely. What use is an undertaker to a world where people don't die? Or a grim reaper, for that matter? [Even though he's very much retired.] But I do have my other talents. I'm very good with teas thanks to milord's cafe, for example, and I used to bake a cake or two at least once a month.

[Oh? So that has her attention too? People here love sweet things, and how can he blame them? Maybe he should start another cafe.]

That all depends on where you stand in the grand scale of things. From the top looking down, I suppose everyone is replaceable. But then on the other end of the spectrum, you couldn't bear to lose the one standing next to you sometimes. But you've the right of it. Sweets do make things a tad better. I used to keep them around in the parlor all the time. What do you like?
