[He huffs a quiet laugh.] Right. Of course they do. I know a lot of Necromancers and can vouch for that.

[He blinked.]

...you...summoned a dragon spirit?

[ Dorian grins in a way that may seem ominous. ]

From the dragon we had just killed, in order to fell the second dragon, yes.

[Aaron's eyes go sufficiently wide.]

You...used a dragon spirit to fight...another dragon?
fantachetic: (Default)

[personal profile] fantachetic 2019-04-10 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. One of my more taxing endeavors, but certainly worth it.

I...guess. [Aaron may be many things, but a showman isn't one of them.] I think I understand why people are cautious about your magic, though. I can't...really pass judgment. I don't think I understand it well enough.

[He pauses, thoughtful.]

Honestly, they probably don't, either. People get scared when they don't understand, and it makes them do stupid things, and say even more stupid things.

[personal profile] fantachetic 2019-04-10 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Precisely so. It is human nature to fear things you do not understand, though I commend you for trying. Most do not, I am quite used to that fact. Back home, people believe me to be a blood magic-using Maleficar intent upon destroying the Inquisition from the inside out.

We don't thrive as a community by living in fear, whether the community in question is this Fleet, a country, a planet, or the universe. It's our nature to fear what we don't understand, sure, but we also don't survive alone. Humans are communal creatures.

[He chuckles.]

Well, I can dissect 'Maleficar' enough to figure out it means something bad, and from where I'm standing, the only crime you're guilty of is a lack of observation.

If only that were blatantly obvious to the masses. Because I happen to come from the same stock as my fanatical countrymen that would like to see the Imperium as 'what it used to be' ignoring the fact that early Tevinter was a cesspool.. I digress. Everyone believes I'm going to kill their firstborn to perform blood magic to possess everyone despite the fact that I am working directly against them.

[ Maker, it's nice that he's not been spit at or cursed for his mere presence in the fleet. ]

That's the second blade of our communal natures. We tend to go along with the status quo. It's easier, and fighting against it leaves you vulnerable to having to fight it alone. That's terrifying it most people, and to be honest, impossible to pull off. It's hard to find the faith to stand up when you're not sure anyone's going to stand with you.

[A lot of what Dorian was commenting on was lost on him, of course, but he could get the gist of it, and he'd ask for clarification in a moment.]

It sounds like you did, though, and that's admirable, and I understand something about racial prejudice, too, and the pitfalls of pride when people can't fall back on it.

[ Dorian's expression falters for just a moment at the implication that what he did was admirable in any way. It was simply the right thing to do, he didn't have any visions of grandeur when he did it, but pride in his country enough to try and save it. ]

At the very least, I'm not completely in the spotlight and seen as a second-class citizen.

So was I. [And he smiles a knowing smile...because he seems something of himself in Dorian, which if Aaron was the type of man to judge a book by the cover, would be highly unlikely.] But that's not what's important, is it? It doesn't matter what happens to us. What matters is doing what you can for your people.
fantachetic: (Default)

[personal profile] fantachetic 2019-04-11 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
..Precisely. I had no visions of surviving past it, so long as I did what was right, it was worth it. I've no need to worry about that, however. I live quite beyond it.

Congratulations?

[He smiles at his own joke. It's...a bit macabre, but when you come from a world that's basically ended, that's actually a cause for celebration.]

...sorry. [And he shakes his head.] I think I've interrupted your training long enough. I think I'll head back to the lodge, see if I can catch wind of any stories that don't involve ghosts, just to be on the safe side.

[A beat.] Un...less you want to join me? I haven't tried the local beer yet and...that's kind of a thing I do in a new place.

[personal profile] fantachetic 2019-04-11 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Quite.

[ This man reminds him an awful lot of Bull and raises an eyebrow at the invitation. He's not one to turn down a drink by any means, but for some reason, it's hard for him to decipher if Aaron is flirting or being genuine. Dorian laughs, tucking his staff away. ]

It's probably for the best that I stop for now, lest someone else walk into my work.

Yeah, and it's probably not a good idea to chase people off a cliff on accident.

[Bad jokes are how he adjusts to situations. Aaron's just making himself comfortable with the idea of magic, and necromancy in particular.]

Okay, so...I had an ulterior motive. I'm horrible at keeping secrets, so I should just be upfront about it.

[personal profile] fantachetic 2019-04-13 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank the Maker that death doesn't seem to touch the Fleet in the way it does the natural balance.

[ Well, Aaron is reminding him more and more of his Inquisitor. His upfront honesty and the apparent inability to keep secrets are rather endearing. ]

Is that so?

[personal profile] customplates 2019-04-17 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's sort of a mixed blessing, yeah.

[He nods, though.]

Yeah. Are you, uh...did you hear about the incident on one of the waystations a few months ago? Involving the undead?
