Who: Lup + anyone!
Broadcast: Yes
Action: Heron / Iskaulit
When: Nowish
Hey there, fleeter friends, let me pick your brain for a few minutes, get those creative juices flowing.
If you could have any kind of magical weapon, armor, or a fancy artifact- what would it be, and what could it do? The theoretical sky is the limit, here, this is just a fun thought experiment.
[Toooootally theoretical. She's not fishing for new stuff to work on, no sir.
Lup can be found easily enough in person as needed, either in her room or in the kitchen on the Heron, or messing around in the smithy onboard the Iskaulit. It's project time.]

[Very precise, very technical. Very accurate.
Very empty.]
Lots of words about what it does and what it can be made of. That's not what it is. Try again.

It's a-- an extension of the caster?
[That doesn't sound right but it's what he's got.]

[Lup holds her focus between both hands, spinning it slowly. It's intricately decorated, carved tongues of red-hot flames creeping up the handle and neck, ending with a cascade of stars in the bowl. However pretty it might be, it's still just a wooden spoon, and the only magic attached to it is leftover energy from her spells. As she said, nothing fancy.]
Pure magic is volatile, a living thing. Call it the Weave, or the will of the gods, or whatever you named it in your plane of existence- it's all the same. Pure anything is stronger and ultimately more dangerous than a diluted form, you have to know that much. A focus is the dilution of that power. It's a partner, a shield, a tool- something to help you use magic, instead of it using you. The Weave is drawn in, and then out- redirected through the focus and towards your target. If you use yourself as a focus, that magic can go anywhere, including back inside of you.
[She abruptly stops her spinning.]
You said you make salves, because of how you do spellcasting. Tell me what happened- any example you can think of.

One of my first ideas here was to make a mana gem that would store sunlight and convert it to mana. I had a friend help me, a human who could build robots. But when I tried the formula, the entire gem exploded.
If a spell backfires like that it just means it wasn't perfect. And I think part of the problem was the shape, as you showed me.

[She shoots him an interrogating look.]
And that's happened a few times. Right?
[The way he'd phrased the original comment that set her off sure made it seem that way.]

Y... yes, but-- if it's my research, then that's fine. Advancements aren't made without risk and if it's just me, then it's a risk I'll take for as many times as it takes!

Meanwhile Lup lowers her arm and waits, watching his reaction.]

When it's over and he's still alive, he's panting hard, and he can see the exact damage that her spell inflicted on the wall and tiles around him. He could have retorted, really-- could have thrown up a shield or something, but instead he froze. It's embarrassing, all things considered.
He normally has a retort for every situation-- some kind of sassy remark. But his stunned silence speaks volumes in itself.
... He's listening. For now.]

When she lifts her spoon a third time, it's to rest it casually against her shoulder.]
Mana gems, or ice knives- arcane explosions can be dangerous. It's not just you that you should be worrying about. How about that human friend of yours? Or anyone else who sauntered on up to your gem experiment in the snow? People are gonna be around you when you cast. And you can't just isolate yourself all the time, either.
[She taps her own shoulder with the spoon a few times, taking a step forward to nudge at the broken floor with one boot.]
You say you don't want to hurt people, but you're missing two very important facts: one, focuses don't hurt people, it's what you do with 'em, and two, you're already hurting people by using wild magic. You may be at the top of the list of casualties, but uncontrolled arcana can't be shaped the same way without the proper tools. You keep this up and you're gonna take someone down with you. You do that, and it's not just your problem anymore.
[Very abruptly, the tapping stops, and her eyes are all fire and steel.]
And this is the only warning you get, bud: if that someone is someone I care about? I will fucking end you.
[Taako likes you. Taako hangs out with you. Think about that.]

He could argue, a little. But they'd be more reasons and justifications, like she said, and that callout alone takes the breath out of any excuse he might have. She's not... wrong, and admitting that sucks, but he can't be right all the time. Taako and Lup are incredible wizards and he has a lot to learn from them, he knows this. His pride can take a backseat.
She's right, too, that he doesn't think about what's going on around him. At some point his luck will run out. He won't have the answer for everything, and someone will get hurt. If Hiro got hurt because of him, or gods forbid Eithan... he'd never forgive himself.
His fingers tremble a bit, a nervous habit, and he curls them into fists. It takes him a considerable amount of effort to lift his eyes again. When he speaks it's in a quiet, even tone as he tries to keep his own emotions in check. He can scream later in the comfort of his own quarters.]
Can I leave now?
[Whew, he hasn't been scolded like this in a long time.]

Is that all you have to say? -Actually, you know what, I don't care at this point. Request denied. I'm not satisfied.
[And he's even further into the doghouse, now. She can see the conflict, and the way he looks thoroughly scolded reminds him of just how young he is, but that's all the more reason to lay down the law, use a firm hand. He won't learn if no one teaches him. She's never wanted kids or apprentices, but evidently no one's bothered to do this with him before, so it's on her shoulders now.
Fuck. She's so angry, it's all she can do not to fireball this whole room.]
Your focus, before you came here. Tell me about it.

He can tell she's mad and that she doesn't like that question, but he doesn't understand what he was supposed to say. Thank you? Not when he's like this, he'll sound like he doesn't mean it. There's a part of him that will kowtow to anyone to escape being hurt but that part is smaller now, only really appearing when he might actually die.
He breathes out slowly and wills himself not to blink out of this damn room and run. He doesn't... want Lup to be mad at him, but he can't just run away and expect to fix it later, either.]
... I had a staff. It's nothing remarkable, just a standard issue bronze staff with an orb on the end.

But fine, whatever. She's never done unremarkable in her life, and she's not about to start now. And while he may not deserve it, nor is she feeling especially charitable, if the trade-off is her brother's safety and well-being, then...
...gods, okay. This stupid kid is getting a focus.
With an irritated huff she tucks her spoon back into her belt and walks past him to retrieve her brush, then heads towards the chalkboard covered in project notes, calling back with a dismissive tone,]
Fine, then. That's all.
no subject
He'd better get started on that.
He does feel bad, though, enough that he inhales like he's about to say something else. He hesitates. He decides that he's better off not saying anything, perhaps the smartest thing he's done since he got here, and he leaves.]
