[ Actually, use of the term "skullkid" was not exactly correct for once, since she's not wearing it today. Who is this normal kid hanging around the SS Red Fish? Or hanging around the shops here.

Goodwill can be useful on its own. Did you know... I think if humanity's at peace someday, I might like to study botany.

It certainly could be useful when it came to crop development! I also thought about history. We've lost so much history, it's tragic.

You certainly are ambitious.

I may have one or two ambitions. We'll just have to see what bears fruit.

[ She doesn't say as much, because it's impossible, and because it likely wouldn't make either of them feel better-- but it'd be nice if the two of them could switch places, so that Hange could do all she wanted to do, and so that she could just finish living her life. ]

In the meantime, you could start on those while you're here.

It's one of the few fringe benefits to being here, as far as I'm concerned...

I don't have much in the way of plans, unfortunately.

I suppose having that much time removes some of the urgency from things.

[Though she looks at Emblica with a very direct gaze.]

I can't imagine it's all sunshine and roses, though.

It was nice, at first.

But as with anything else, it became too much of a good thing.

I'm not sure if it's a greater tragedy to die too young or live too long... well, I know my personal feelings, but objectively speaking.

It's the sort of dilemma that anyone would have trouble being objective about. I've learned there are very few who are happy with their lot in life.

I guess I've seen too many soldiers die... mostly, they deserved to live longer. Good, brave people.

[ It isn't fair, that people who deserve to live don't, and the ones that don't often do live. ]

It isn't easy to see that happen.

[A certain kind of justice that Hange has become keenly accustomed to, to be honest.]

No. No, it's not.

There are a great many cynical things to be said about human nature that may very well be true. But many of the people I've known have bravely given their lives for the survival and freedom of others. I'll refute someone who says that humans aren't worth saving every time.

[ She envies Hange still being able to think like that.

Apparently, she's more bitter than she'd thought. ]

If only more of them were like you.

There are plenty of humans like me... I'd show you my comrades, for instance. Those soldiers I mentioned. Some of the young people who've just recently joined our cause.

Not everyone is altruistic, of course. But many people are.
