[Kitty's morning on the Tourist did not go as planned. It's another hour or so before she makes this announcement. She doesn't even know what happened to the minutes in between. But she's all business when she looks into the communicator. No hiding behind text.]

Winn Schott is in a coma. [Blunt. Direct. Maybe she should have called a few people individually first like Kara, but she wasn't going to make it through this if she did that.] He always has projects going, so they're going to be late. If something is important let me know and I'll see if it's something I can work on in his place.

I already fed his slug today, but someone on the Tourist should take care of that until lazy wakes up. [The mild insult to cover feelings is so classic Kitty, circa home it may not even fit with what people of the fleet know of her. That Kitty had walls around her walls, but those are gone now.]

He's always checking on ship systems on the Twin Roses since we managed to merge and still not get an engineer out of the deal, so if anyone else can help us out with that in the meantime let me know. I'll also be working on the new dance studio later today if anyone wants to help. [Because this mission is almost complete and she needs another one so she can hold it together. Can't fall apart if she's sanding down floors.]

[She shakes her head.] He's just asleep. It's no big deal. [Except for the part where it's a very big deal to her and she's not that great at hiding it.]

And yet, you're still allowed to be worried about him.

[He only calls you out on your bullshit because he loves you, Kitty. ]

[She's quiet for a few beats before responding again. Not too long after I arrived there were people not from my world exactly, but a version of it. Seeing them was good. And a couple of them went into these sleeps and I never saw them again after that. I know it isn't always like that or usually... [But it only takes one to be devastating here.]

But the fear is still there, all the same. If it has happened before, it is well founded. I understand.

[There's no judgement in his tone, he gets it. Places like this are cruel. You cannot trust them to show mercy. ]

[She nods.] I don't want to lose him. [And there's that fear of "what if I already did?]

[He understands, he truly does. ]

I know. If your places were reversed, he would feel the same.

[He isn't going to reassure her that Winn will wake up, he doesn't know that for certain. She doesn't deserve the potential lie, for it could end up being a cruel one.]

I'm glad if it had to be one of us that it's this way. [After a life time of losing people and a long time being messed with in a multitude of ways in another kidnapped place she may not really be better at handling this than Winn. Instead of being practice it tends to come out more like aggravating existing PTSD but it's still in her nature to want to protect him from it.] The thought does help.

[OH good, that's something at least. He's not completely screwing this comfort thing up. He offers a small smile. ]

I am glad to hear that. I hope he awakes sooner rather than later.

Yes, like now or a minute or two from now would be great. But I think if he didn't wake up for a waffle that will still be later than I want.

...Than any of us want. I'm not the only one he's important to.

...Yes, if he has not risen for a waffle, that would suggest he'll be asleep for some time as of yet.

[Tragic. He lets out a soft huff of amusement. ]

Very true. I shall use up some of my limited optimism in waiting for him to awaken.

[And not be sent away.]

Rare stuff there. I think mine's all still at war. [Not all of it or she wouldn't be in the relationship at all or making friends.]

Hm, an understandable sentiment, honestly.

He'd appreciate it. I mean, I appreciate it too. The optimism. He's better at that than me though. He's better at a lot of things. Better half.

I can understand that sentiment. Marian is- [a lot of things, really, he doesn't quite feel like he deserves her...or rather, he's stealing her from a version of himself who does]

She's a much better person than she gives herself credit for. I'm much more of the aftermath after a disaster.

That's...perfect. I think I said once I'm what survived after everything. [Not exactly a whole person, but a partial one that fights twice as hard.] You want some company being that?

[That gets the ghost of a smile. Not many people really get it, and tend to assume that rebuilding a person's self should be easy, not realising that sometimes, it's impossible, and they have to live with whatever pieces they have of themselves left to create...something with.

Not a whole person. But a fighty one. ]

I wouldn't mind that at all.

Good to have company. Kurt always calls me a disaster as it is. [Softer expression. He always says it with love.]

It is important to acknowledge it. But I find the real trick is learning to live with it. Normalcy is rather far outside my reach, but getting somewhere near it would be good enough for me.

Well, it probably means nothing coming from me to the point of almost being a bad thing, but you feel pretty near normal to me.

[Oh, Kitty. He offers a small smile, letting out a huff of amusement.]

I will take that as a compliment, though I assume that just means I have got better at living with my demons than actually acquiring anything like a normal life.

I thought being good at living with demons was normal life. I might be in trouble. [Smiling.]

Hah. Perhaps I am aiming a little too high?

Were you going right for the kids, family pets, and picket fence? Or whatever the equivalent is where you're from?

[He has to laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of it all.]
