Who goes there?
[After weeks of relative silence, our intrepid passengers finally travel within visual range of a blue planet. Marsiva's slow-and-steady course makes it clear that this is the Drift Fleet's next destination--but just as your ships come within scanning range and your computers begin to gather data, a fleet of quick little watchdog ships zip out of the planet's atmosphere, heading straight for you!
They do not swoop in for an attack, but hold their positions between you and the planet. They look close enough to cause some trouble, and any working Communications Officer can tell you that they have weapons locked on the Fleet in warning.
The tell-tale sound of an incoming hailing frequency chimes over your ship's alert system. Someone would like you to pick up the phone. Thanks to their augment, all passengers instinctively know that they'll be looking for the Captain or the Communications Officer of the ship--but no one says someone else can't pick it up first.
On the bridge, the hailing frequency can be viewed on screen, along with the attached subject: "Identify yourselves." The notification chime goes off every seven seconds. These ships don't look like they're going anywhere, but they don't want to be kept waiting, either.
What do you do? Will you accept the frequency?]
ooc → see the July Star System post for details about this event! there is no real rush in this post (we won't even be around to begin responding to it until Sunday afternoon), so take your time, feel free to tag each other in this post (maybe try to get your Comms officers off their asses), and there is no time too late to tag into this post. the element of urgency is all IC, and there is no OOC pressure at all.

Bloodsport. [--it's an incriminating name, guys.] The problem is that you are flying into our space. State your purpose and intent immediately.
B
[no he is totally not stalling because "purpose and intent" are kind of nebulous. a pause, and... serious again.]
Our purpose is peaceful exploration. I assume... [another pause as he glances at the computer's readouts.] ...That this planet has open port? We hadn't intended much more than resupplying and a breath of fresh air.
no subject
[so much accusation in his tone. so, so much.]
Am I to assume that they are explorers as well?
no subject
[there we go. that's what he wanted. he's on top of this now--no more hesitant pauses. he's already named the Marsiva, which leaves the bug ship as the only topic of conversation.]
The crew'd been taken over by some kind of behavior-altering disease. Our lab officers believe it's a fungus that slowly destroys their central nervous system. If there is anything still alive in there, it's under heavy quarantine now, and the ship's been sterilized from top to bottom.
You're welcome to check our files, if you don't believe me. I can patch you the records and whatever we've got from the lab work.
no subject
...Please send documentation, yes.
B1 - Crew
Okay, give us five minutes. We'll send it back through this frequency.
[if he can put the line on hold without Jinx, he will--and go back to his crew's audio channel.]
Simon, can you pull together whatever medical info we've got on the bugs and that fungus? I know there were some public lab records, but I'll take any personal notes you've got on file as well.
Hiccup, see if you can find any related readings on the Bloodsport's computer, starting four weeks back and ending... about a week ago. I'm thinking atmosphere, life scans, basic molecular scans, anything like that from when we were inside that ship.
Jinx... [...who might be right there on the bridge with him.] ...See how many relevant network entries you can find from then. Let's send these guys all the gritty details.
[the other three can sit tight, for now... unless they've got something to say!]
audio;
On it. [He's accessing the records he can get to down here in the engineer's room. Sure, he might still type by poking one key at a time, but he's pretty quick to delve through the archive.]
Life signs... yeah, it's all here. You should be able to see it up there on the bridge. Did I miss anything?
audio;
[thank goodness. this is a nice change, not having to wrangle his crew for information. he'll flip through enough to get the gist of it, and...]
...This is perfect, yeah. Thank you, I'll send this over. It sounds like these guys are just as confused about this ship as we were, so I doubt we're in much trouble.
audio;
[What a mess.]
Let me know if anything changes.
audio;
[might as well. it's not like he's planning on saying anything shady he should hide from the crew, and that way they'll know at the same time he does if anything starts going bad...]

If we're lucky, they're already doing the same thing on their own ships...

B1 - Crew
Yeah, sure. get right on that Cap'n. Sounds just like her.
The feet she has propped on the consul don't move an inch, and the hands she has resting behind her head stay firmly in place.]
no subject
Jinx, I'm serious.
no subject
She shoots him a bored look and lazily pulls out one of her last lollipops.
She's so concerned about what you're gonna do, cap'n. Really.]
no subject
for a second? he looks dangerous. predatory. intent.
but it vanishes as someone else pings him over the network, one of the passengers actually doing their jobs--and he turns to that with his usual expression back in place.]
no subject
[That's a new look. It's a look that makes Jinx sit up just a little bit and pay attention. It doesn't get he lollipop out of her mouth, but her feet slip off the consule at least.
She still doesn't think he'll actually do anything. Probably.
Maybe it was the set of his jaw. It reminded her a little of the Boss Man when she'd gona out and made Art all night without asking.]

B2 - Frequency
All right, you should be receiving the requested documentation soon. I, ah... Am not exactly in a position to ask, but is there anything you can tell us about that ship? We're still in the dark about who they were or how this thing started.
no subject
It was a self-contained merchant colony. They don't leave their ships willingly...
[which means this is either the most elaborate ruse ever, or the fleet is telling the truth.]
no subject
[taking a guess, there, even if it's an educated one.]
