"You've been working even longer than me," Wrath observes. "There's a lot that needs to be done."

Ugh that question. She hates it. "It's... Okay."

Beverly elects not to point out that she's not the one with the bad back. Wrath offering to help out isn't inherently a bad thing and Beverly isn't about to lecture her, she just doesn't want her to overdo it.

"Why don't we both take a break then? We're no good to anyone if we're too tired to do our jobs properly."

Grumble. Well, she can't argue with that. It's fair. "Okay," she says. "And you're right. If there's down time to be had, is better to use it. Just in case the down time disappears."

Hey, Beverly's usually pretty good at convincing people to do stuff. At least she didn't have to resort to insistent pestering. This time. "One of the fish bars is near here, if you want to grab some lunch."

She's gotten beaten up (figuratively speaking) by Maine and Orion enough that she doesn't fight too hard about being told to take a break. Because she knows it's probably true. Just so long as she isn't the only one having to rest, she doesn't mind so much.

"Oh, that sounds great! I love fish!" ...though wait a second. "Wait, is it true, what I heard? That they don't grow their protein in vats here? They actually eat like... animals?" Because oh god.

Beverly can understand her reaction somewhat. They may not have protein vats at home, but replicators mean the meat Beverly eats rarely comes from actual animals either. "As far as I know, it's freshly caught fish. If that bothers you, we don't have to go there! They do some pretty inventive things with algae as well, no meat involved."

"Yeah, I think I'd rather just. You know. I'm going to have a pet fish!" How could you eat something that'll be a pet? "Eating animals is kind of a rich person thing," she says. "Back home. Because rich people are all fucked up and have no priorities."

"I take it there is still a lot of economic disparity in your world then?" She says this with no judgement, just ... intellectual curiosity.

"Yeah. The people in District One might as well be on another planet. I'm from D3... I guess? And we do okay because most of us are working soldiers or scientists or engineers, but it's nothing like D1. They just like... Party all the time and look at you like you smell bad." She wrinkles her nose. "And everyone says D4 just needs to work harder, but they already work really hard from what I've seen."

"We had something like that on Earth, back in the early 21st century. They built what they called Sanctuary Districts, which were supposed to provide free housing and food to the poor, but they ended up being more like internment camps and a convenient way for the upper classes to ignore their problems." She pauses. "Things changed, eventually. I hope they can for you too."

"That sounds... Yeah. D4 used to be big, because it was where all the miners lived. But when the dome closed, they couldn't mine any more. And... Things got bad." She tenderness what the general had said, about the city being built on the backs of soldiers, who'd then gotten set aside. It's the same for the miners.

"They just kind of... Use you and then tell you you're not trying hard enough when you're not useful any more," she says quietly. It's another lie, all of it.

Beverly tentatively rests a hand on Wrath's shoulder. "I'm sorry." Because what else can she say? It's no wonder Wrath has been working herself so hard.

She doesn't mind the friendly hand at all. In fact, she leans into it a little. Then gives Beverly a big smile. "It's okay! Things could be a lot worse, and I think it's getting better.'

Beverly returns the smile and, encouraged, gives Wrath's shoulder a little squeeze. "That's right. Whatever they tell you, things can always change for the better." Always that Federation optimism!

Thank goodness, someone else who is optimistic. Sometimes it's hard to look on the bright side. "Definitely." And people are basically good, right? Right! "Vision said he found seaweed that tastes like bacon. I have no idea how he knows what bacon tastes like because he doesn't really eat but I think we should check."

Definitely staying near Bev, though. She's got such pretty hair.

Beverly raises her eyebrows at that. "Bacon seaweed? I've eaten a lot of strange foods in my life, but that's a new one! Did he say where he got it?"

"I think... over there?" She waves vaguely in one direction. "He said the native people know. So we should definitely ask them. Or they might even have it at restaurants and stuff."

Very helpful. Beverly loops one arm through Wrath's. "Well, let's go find out, shall we?"
