I... [She shakes her head a little. Duty to the Divine had her elsewhere.] I did not see much of it firsthand, no.

I...imagine it was unsettling to see the ship in the state that it was in.

[She's... quiet, for a moment. That's quite enough opening up on that subject for now, thank you.]

I'm glad it's over with, and I hope we don't see anything like that again soon.

Maker willing, we won't.

[Although, Cassandra really isn't sure if such atrocity can ever truly be avoided. It seems to be something pervasive and exists beyond any one world. But if that cannot be avoided, she would like to avoid another crew-wide argument.]

[Speaking of.]

How do you find your crew?

[There's a brief tightening of her mouth. But no, she did promise she was going to try to be better about Anders. That's not to say she doesn't have more general complaints.]

They're... they don't seem to care. Everything's a joke to them. They take nothing seriously. If I were captain, if they were my recruits, I would have my hands full getting them into shape.

[Cassandra sighs a little.]

That's unfortunate. And seems to be a common problem. It's not a problem within my crew, but given some of the attitudes of others I've seen...

[Disappointing and irritating come to mind quickly.]

Some of the people they've brought here are children, and sheltered children at that. To send children who aren't ready into a situation like we just faced... no matter how much potential they might have, and I'm sure some of them do... it's not fair. I can't stand it.

[Avelin scowls.]

On the other hand, some of the worst offenders are adults. I'm not sure I can do anything about him. Them.

[Cassandra agrees about the children. There are a number of people here who have no business being on the front lines, but this is especially true of the children. She doesn't comment on it, however, because the slip-up of him versus them is very obvious and it doesn't take much to guess who she's referring to.]

I take it you haven't been getting along with Anders very well.

Not especially. I'm... trying.

[She sighs, heavily.]

I considered him my friend, once, and now I'm faced with this... this version of him that never knew me and believes I'm going to execute him when he's not looking. And he's somehow my commanding officer.

[Aveline gives a snort.]

It's commendable that you have any patience for it.

[And she means that, sincerely. Cassandra didn't know Anders at all beyond his actions, but she thinks she'd be even less inclined to be near him if she had.]

I'm guessing you only know him from his... well, his reputation. What he did.

[Aveline presses her lips together.]

I knew him for six years before that. He hid out in Darktown and ran a clinic where he helped anyone who needed it, mostly Ferelden refugees who had nowhere else to turn. I fought alongside him many times. He is not an evil man. And yet... don't misunderstand me. I'm not defending what he did and I would make him pay for it if it were in my power.

[She gives a snort.]

Meanwhile, here's some young version of him who doesn't know me, who I can't be properly angry with but who seems intent on trying to make me angry anyway.

[Cassandra knows better herself that people are not simply categorically good or evil. Sure, there are creatures out there that are nothing but evil, but people are not like that. They are far too complicated to be placed in such neat boxes. But it's hard for her not to vilify Anders completely in her mind. She never knew him before then. She's known of his good deeds, but never known him.]

You may not be able to be properly angry with him, but he probably can sense that you are angry with him. [At least to some degree. Even if it's unfair to who he is now.] He may find it easier to simply try to live to expectations than to prove anyone wrong.

[She nods; she can recognize a certain amount of insight, definitely.]

You're probably right, there. Anyway, we have... an agreement. For the sake of peace.

And that agreement is?

[She tips her head, a little curious.]

Mostly that I would try not to hold his future actions against him, and he would try not to purposely antagonize me.

[She shrugs; it's not the greatest arrangement, but it's the best they have right now.]

It's as fair as anything I can imagine, right now.

[It is at least something.]

I imagine it's not easy for either of you all the same. Fair or not.

[She says "either of you," but she really means solely Aveline. Even if he hasn't done anything yet by his memory, Cassandra would never coddle Anders.]

No. No, it certainly isn't easy.

[She shakes her head.]

What about you? Is your crew any better?

[Cassandra sighs, tired and heavy.]

It's complicated. I would say about half my crew have questionable morals. Fortunately the Captain is not one of them.

Well, that's something at least. I'm amazed we got out of that ship as well as we did, with the people we have.

[She takes a long drink. The algae isn't so bad once you're used to it.]

As am I. When I heard of the attack on the fleet, I thought for certain it was luck. But it seems they are more resourceful than I would have initially been led to believe.

[Aveline lets out a sigh of breath.]

Whatever else, I suppose we'll have to manage the best we can.
