"It was lovely, sir. It's always a pleasure to watch a fellow artist at work."
no subject
"Ah, I would hardly call myself an artist, but thank you," he inclined his head. "I've only recently taken to the instrument, as it were."
no subject
Wee, kidnapped into space!
"What's it called?"
no subject
"Then you and I are much alike for having only just met," he chuckled, holding out the instrument to her, delicately gripping the neck and the wider body.
"I am told it is called a guitar," he explained. "It was a gift from a friend I made on the ships. I have been practicing so I might return his kindness with a proper song."
no subject
She plucks a few notes, just listening for tuning. And she actually does ever so slightly tweak one, making a purer sound. Then she strums a little, taking in the sound.
"It plays almost like a mandolin, but bigger. It's a richer, deeper sound."
no subject
He can hear it, impressed. How had he missed that? Though the instrument was newer to him, his ears still adjusting to its finer details.
"Yes, those were my thoughts. There are different versions too. This is called an acoustic guitar. There are others called electric guitars and bass guitars. I think there is one called a "keytar" too, though I have no idea what that could be."
no subject
"Electric? As in made of electricity?"
And if he'd pronounced it with a short a, she'd have thought a bass guitar was made of fish. She absolutely pictures a 'keytar' as being made out of individual lock keys and find that to be highly impractical. She's still learning this whole technology thing.
no subject
"No, as I think it somehow uses electrical energy," he shook his head. "The thing that powers the lights and over bits and pieces of our ships." Thankfully Paradisa had introduced him to the concept long ago, though he tended to still think of it as tamed lightning. That was easier than whatever explanation he had been given before.
"I am told it sounds quite different and much louder."
no subject
Moving on. Shiny instrument!
"How clever. I should like to see that someday."
She kneels up again, holding the guitar back to him, treating it with care.
no subject
He takes it back from her, running his fingers across the strings to feel her tuning of it, liking when he heard and felt. She was gifted, this one.
"Hopefully one of the planets or stations we stop at will have something like it. Perhaps there are videos on the network?" he suggested.
no subject
She gives him a questioning look. She knows what the term means when it comes to talking over the communicator in real time. So it puzzles her as to the context this way.
no subject
"Oh, they are like pictures, but they move," he explained. He truly did not understand it himself, but they were a true thing. "Or... if you know magic, it is like scrying."
Again, about the only way he could explain it to himself. Trying to explain it to someone else was nigh impossible.
no subject
"Oh, I see." She smiles a little bashfully, tucks a strand of hair behind a delicately pointed ear. "I'm still learning all this. The give me all this knowledge about ship weapons and laser rifles, but the leave out so much of the daily things."
Thanks so much Atroma.
no subject
"I understand. I understood only some of it when I was in Paradisa, and only because in some cases I was forced to. Here, I had to learn much much more even with the help of the augment," he reached back to touch the implant beneath his hair.
"You seem a smart girl though. I doubt you shall have much troubler."
no subject
"I do enjoy learning. Is Paradisa where you're from?"
Seriously, she can only handle a little praise. She'd rather talk about him.
no subject
"It was where I was before, but not where I hail from. My homeland is called Valdemar," he explained to her, plucking a few stray notes from the strings. "Magic and swords and horses white as snow."
no subject
"Magic and swords I'm familiar with. Horses too, but from how you speak, I'm guessing they're special."
no subject
"Well, mine was. She was - is - my Companion. They take the form of horses, but are not," he chuckled, starting to pluck out a sweet song that underscored his words, background music more than anything, light and trilling to match the crack of the fire. "They are magical in nature, and Choose those who are worthy to become Heralds like myself."
no subject
"What is a Herald, on your world?"
no subject
"It is a someone Chosen by a Companion, who serves the crown with their Gifts, to defend Valdemar from threats within and without her borders," he explained, knowing the question that might come next, but letting her chew over his answer as it was, the tune picking up a livelier lilt.
no subject
"And what are your Gifts?"
no subject
There's a pause as he gathers breath. Clearly it's going to be quite the list.
"MindSpeech, FireStarting, Bardic, Healing, FarSeeing, ForeSight, Fetching, and Mage," he listed them off. "So... all of them."
no subject
"Oh is that all? My goodness, that is quite the list of talents. Though don't think I missed the part about being Bardic. And you said you weren't an artist."
This is a light admonishment, if one at all.
no subject
"Well, it is only a small bit of it. Nothing that would ever see me into the Bardic Collegia, much less into Reds," he chuckled, turning the tune - slower now, gently plucks, like following the steps of a hazy memory.
"What of yourself? I realize I do not even know your name."
no subject
Pleasant introduction, that might be a gentle way of trying to avoid talking about herself, if she can. Not that she won't if he wants to know something about her. She just likes to let other people be the center of attention whenever possible.
