Well, it's sorta like aliens. They're stuff in stories, but you'd never actually meet an alien where I'm from.

Not that I'm saying that you're not real or an alien or something. Obviously you're not. Or are. Not to the second, alien thing, and are to the first. It's just all humans where I'm from, that's all.

[He is a little startled by the sudden laughter though, confused about what he said that was funny until he realizes she's laughing at him. He just tries to roll with it by grinning like he's in on the joke (and not the butt of it).]

So the tattoos... Are those--do all elves have them?

They don't, actually. In my world there are elves who live in human cities and elves like me, who live in the wilderness and keep to the teachings and culture of our people. It's those elves, the Dalish, who are tattooed to honor our gods.

[There's an inflection of a question there not because he's questioning whether or not they look nice. They do, oddly enough for tattoos on someone's face. They look like they're supposed to be there. But he's not sure if he's technically allowed to comment on them???]

Thank you. They're for the goddess Ghillan'nain, the mother of the... well, there's a sort of deer in my world with white fur and beautiful white horns that twist around each other. They're called halla, and Ghillan'nain created them, along with a number of other creatures.

[Josephs not sure if he's imagining quite what they're actually supposed to look like, but he thinks of old picture books he had once as a kid. Stags were so often depicted as majestic, noble creatures that stood proud and tall. He thinks maybe they look something like that, only instead of brown, a shimmering white.]

They sound better looking than a deer. I guess there's a lot of them though where you're from?

[Maybe they're just as ordinary to her as a deer would be to him.]
