[The only sign he gives that he's uncomfortable is how his forefinger starts to tap against one of his hands. It's been years, he's had enough time. Doesn't mean it's easy to think about.]

I got it when I was thirteen. Mom and I were just coming back from the Orange County Astronomer's Club. I don't remember much about it, actually. One minute, I was talking to my mom, and she was... she was beautiful. Laughing and smiling about something I said.

[Tap tap tap.]

Next thing I knew, I woke up in the hospital with a bunch of bandages around me. [He lets out a sigh, though he refuses to take his eyes off the stars.] They told me a drunk driver hit us from the oncoming lane... and that mom didn't make it. [Taptaptap.] Apparently, a piece of the windshield cut my nose pretty bad, and it turned into a scar that'll never go away. I guess it's a really bad metaphor, or something like that.

... scars are reminders of where we've been.

[it's something he's always thought, despite knowing that his arm is the only scar he'll ever have. hydra's technology with the tesseract is unimaginably streamlined. between his own experimentation and their facilities, commander has never needed to worry about anything leaving scars.

[with the paranoia he's been slowly feeding lately, his statement I'm response is the real terrible metaphor.]

I'm sorry about your mother. I can't imagine how much that hurts.

[that nagging voice in the back of his head says it's because he doesn't remember his.]
geonomy: (☆ old but i'm not that old)

[personal profile] geonomy 2015-07-27 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[Clay's never really thought of it that way before. Reminders of where we've been.

"On a road, not even knowing I was about to lose my mom?", says the more cynical part of himself that he doesn't really visit much. But yeah... he understands what Commander's saying, and he likes to think of it that way rather than a cruel metaphor.]

That was ten years ago, and I'm fine now. I mean... yeah, it hurt back then. I didn't know who else to turn to... my aunt was grieving on her own, and... [Well. Let's not talk about his dad.] Anyway. I've had a lot of help, and here I am now. [He lifts his head, finally, to give a light smile.] Sorry for the downer story. I just thought you'd like to know, since it's kind of always there. [He swipes at his bandage again - He hates the scar and he hates the reminder, hence the covering of it.]
proudlywehailed: (i'll fucking digest you)

[personal profile] proudlywehailed 2015-07-27 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
No, don't apologize.

[he sits up straighter, looking up at the night sky.]

It's a part of you. I'm glad you shared it with me. [and after a pause.]

I don't remember anything about my life before Hydra, but I've lost people. I've been around for a long time. Humans don't live as long as supersoldiers.
geonomy: (☆ down this river every turn)

[personal profile] geonomy 2015-07-28 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Supersoldier... [So that's what he is. Clay leans his head back again, hands lifting up to pillow the back of it.] So you're like a star, huh. [... Hmm.] How long do supersoldiers live, then?
proudlywehailed: (but now i tell a single truth)

[personal profile] proudlywehailed 2015-07-28 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm well over seventy.

[that he remembers.]

I'm probably pretty close to 100, actually.
geonomy: (☆ sprinkle stardust on my pillowcase)

[personal profile] geonomy 2015-07-28 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
[......... uh]

Wow, uh... [Dude. He did not peg you to be close to 100.] Yoooou age well.
proudlywehailed: (i)

[personal profile] proudlywehailed 2015-07-28 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
[okay he is cracking up that is the best reaction]
geonomy: (☆ swing my heart across the line)

[personal profile] geonomy 2015-07-28 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Well. That laughter is contagious, and Clay finds himself snickering at first, then laughing as well, pushing himself back into a sitting position.]

Well, you do!
proudlywehailed: (that you were waiting up for me)

[personal profile] proudlywehailed 2015-07-28 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
[he manages to rein himself in, shaking his head.]

Trust me, I've had the best doctors my world could offer. I'll live a long time yet.
geonomy: (☆ i see this life - like a swinging vine)

[personal profile] geonomy 2015-07-28 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. Even us astronauts don't get insurance like that! Man, what a ripoff.

[If he got to live that long, he could see all the advancements that astronomers make, just how far humanity can push itself! But then he'd also outlive his best friend. Hrmm.]
proudlywehailed: (would i come running home to you)

[personal profile] proudlywehailed 2015-07-28 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
[outliving your best friend sucks a lot more when you kill him]

Apparently you just have to sign up for experimentation. They dump enough money in you, they're definitely gonna keep you alive.

[he sighs.]

I just kinda wish it was a little more personal than that sometimes. My handlers have always been the closest things to lasting friends I've had, and it's their job to monitor me. Now I show up here, and I have people swearing they're my friends, and they're people I wouldn't even bother to spit on back home.

Mmm. [That's kind of sad, because he's met Natasha, and she was really nice and cool. He kind of wants to say that, but he's not sure if "Commander" would appreciate it.]

Well. I'm your friend. [He pauses, then tilts his head with a little smile.] Orion.
proudlywehailed: (i want to be ignorant)

[personal profile] proudlywehailed 2015-07-28 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
[he honestly would; he knows that he and natasha have a history in his world and she sees him as some sort of abomination here. they're complicated.

[nothing in the world feels quite as warm as what clay says next. he really does feel like he has a true friend in him, and he knew that having him pick a name would mean the world to him. he just hadn't really known how much his world encompassed, to make it feel this monumental.]

Orion... That's perfect.

[he looks up at the sky. there's no orion up there, not on this planet, but he can't help but look regardless.]

I can't wait to tell Misha.
geonomy: (☆ sink in the river)

[personal profile] geonomy 2015-07-28 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
[Ha... He likes it. He really likes it!

Clay looks up too, that warm smile staying on his face as a sense of... pride (for Comm - Orion)? Contentment? Definitely happiness, swells up in his chest. Here he thought it'd take weeks to come up with a name, but talking to him now, it just... popped up. And it was perfect. And Clay feels absolutely honored to be the one to give the man who'd gone so long without a name one that he can be proud of.]

Like I told you: you're like a star! And it just... it suits you.

[He scoots a little closer after that, enough to hold his hand out to shake.]

So... hey. Nice to meet you, Orion.
proudlywehailed: (would i come running home to you)

[personal profile] proudlywehailed 2015-07-30 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
[he has something now that he never realized he'd wanted--something that was utterly his. he'd tried romance--but one does not own their lover, and this is true to an even greater degree with a woman like natasha romanoff. he had his pride as the posterchild of hydra's world-wide security, but that, as all other things, was something that could be taken away in a moment's breath by the very people who gave it to him.

[this is his. this is a name, something given to him that no one can steal away. right now, in his eyes, there's nothing--and no one--more important than what he has right now.

[his shoulders shake with the smallest bit of silent laughter, and he shakes his head, reaching out to take that hand--and he's sure to do so with the one that isn't metal.]

It's nice to meet you, too, Clay. I'm so glad I did.
