[It's rare in Drift Fleet to see Dorian as The Necromancer. He plays with people, he flirts with them. Occasionally his humor is morbid. But that's just him.

But tonight is different.

The broadcast is from a darkened cargo bay of the SS Three Twins.

Dorian is wearing black robes with a pointed hood, and as the broadcast starts, he gestures with a skull-topped staff, seeming to almost do it for show. There's a whispering of something circling him, a spirit, perhaps, and candles illuminate around him as it vanishes.]

I do hope you're having a good night. I had nearly lost track of the date, what with the odd stars, but I'm quite certain that it is the beginning of the eighth month, Matrinalis. Which means, for those of you unaccustomed to Thedosian holidays, it is All Soul's Day. Or close enough. ...regardless...

[He conjures a small flicker of fire in his hand, the light casting shadows on his face, the glowing purple lines of necromantic sigils and runes seemingly etched into his hands and arms.]

It is the day we Thedosians remember our dead. As a necromancer, I daresay I am qualified to lead the celebrations, if you will.

You are welcome to come and extinguish a candle for those you've lost.

Okay, anything called blood magic doesn't sound stellar to me, but everything you just said sounds like something someone else could say about necromancy. But all I know is creepy fiction I've read.

[ You all kind of sound ridiculous to this here guy who doesn't have a horse in either race. But his tone is amiable enough...not that a kid should sound threatening, anyway. ]

Only ever, huh? What is it, exactly, if it's always that bad when used? Sacrifices?

Think of it more like...hmm. The stealing of power from another living being. Sacrifices are common, and demons are often drawn to blood magic. It's an entirely disgusting practice.

[Dorian considers for a moment.]

Necromancy teaches us to revere the dead, blood magic teaches us to destroy the living, to put it in simple terms.

[It's a prejudiced, oversimplified explanation.]

Wouldn't revering the dead mean letting them rest in peace, though?

Ah, no, the spirits I use are drawn to the energy of the dead. I use them to augment my own abilities, or to fight for a short while, and then I release them back to where they came.

There are different types, and I take it that in most world, necromancy is more about reanimating the dead than using spirits. Curious, that.

...I'm not sure what it is where I come from. If that's what it is.

[ He is sure he just saw his dead brother walking and talking not long ago but uhhh not getting into that here. ]

Your way sounds less creepy than that, at least, but...still creepy.

[ Said like the way spiders are a little creepy. But oh well, not threatened by spiders. Or this. There's a long list of shit around here that weirds him out, and this isn't at the top of the list. ]

But probably effective, I guess. Is that the only kind of, uh...magic you do?

I have education in all of the basic schools of magic, theory, at the least, but my specialty is fire.

[And he seems very pleased about that.]

Well, that's because it's the best element.

Absolute rudeness! I'm definitely no arsonist. And mages aren't really a thing where I'm from, unless we're talking the guys that like to charge for cheap tricks.

The thermal energy I can conduct has two sources, but I wouldn't call either of them magic. [ EXCEPT IT'S MAGIC BECAUSE SCI-FI IS SUCH BULLSHIT. ] One should be familiar enough around this place, I'd hope. You know about nanomachines, right?

I am...vaguely familiar with the term. I assume those are very tiny machines.

[And he barely contains a laugh at his own expense.]

I'm afraid I've found magic to be far more useful than technology, but please, I am always eager to learn.

Well if I could summon things without needing tech, I probably would, too. But as it is, nanomachines are pretty vital. They're able to replicate and evaluate, even rebuild, and have thousands of uses. My Ether abilities are just a few.

I can create ice or lightning, but I've always been better with fire. Can't make it do anything too fancy though, it's just for battle.

Hmm, I see. Curious. Are you made of these machines, then? Or do they merely replace things like muscle and skin?

[He smirks a little.]

I suspect that "battle" to some would seem like fancy use. There's a marked difference between a mage who can create fire sculptures and one that can use their abilities for more...practical purposes.

[ That inquiry, while harmless really, does get a reaction out of him. He frowns, though it's not quite a glare, before shrugging and shaking his head. ]

I'm human. The nanomachines are just another tool.

[ A tiny mutant bioweapon human shut uuuup. ]

Fire sculptures, huh? That'd be fun to do, though. Can you do that?

Certainly, all it takes is a bit of control.

[And he gestures, a pattern of fire in front of him, delicate geometry from which a serpent uncoils. It opens its mouth, flames hissing, before he extinguishes it with a dismissive wave.

He smirks, pleased.]

Quite simple, actually, but the ease and how long one can sustain it are the key. You see, it's one thing to sculpt magic for a few moments, quite another to maintain it while entertaining guests.
