004 - Friends in Low Places

[Crowley isn't in his usual place, lounging before the communications array aboard the Pathstone. Today, he seems to be wandering one of the big, empty spaces within the Iskaulit, looking around him with a small level of appraisal. ]

Back in Paradisa, there were a number of bars around the place. Gave people a place to go spend time, drown their sorrows, maybe people watch, or just sit in a corner and ignore the fact they were trapped in a magical soul-eating castle. One of my favourite places was a bar called the Lux. Great place, that.

[He wanders over to one part of the room, holding one hand out like he's trying to judge the space. ]

Discounting the fleeting places we end up on our travels, we haven't got anywhere like that here. Our own Drift Fleet captives place. Seen as we have this floating lot of empty space following us now, we might as well use it. So this is me, laying claim to this space for a bar that will be named at a later date. Something classy, I think.

Of course, work isn't my thing, so anyone interested in joining me in this grand and marvellous enterprise? I'd say I'll make it worth your while, but I think having our own bar will do that all by itself.

You could offer a certain amount of free drinks as the prize, perhaps? If they are competing to name a pub, I am sure that would help contestants dig deep for their creativity.

Free? I don't understand this word. Free.

All right, so perhaps a discount? Though I do think it is a fact that people respond much better to the term 'free' than nearly any other.

Perhaps if I was running a charity.

[His tone suggests he really doesn't approve of such a plan. ]

Well you really should offer them something if you want entries that have any thought behind them. A contest does suggest a prize, after all.

I would have thought getting their name on the place was prize enough.

Perhaps it will be. And in the end you do not have to use any of the names suggested, after all, if you are to be proprietor.

Of course, if they're all crap, I'll think of something else.

If nothing else it would boost morale, I think - a bit of friendly competition. It would connect them to the bar, which would no doubt improve attendance.

I think the existence of the bar at all will help that.

Most likely, though I suppose we would only be able to go to it when at the waystations, no? During transport I don't think we can access it.

_{[ And he could not make and maintain gates for that sort of thing. He had wondered about creating a system like that between the ships, but he had never heard of it being done from his Aunt or the Tayledras, and the pain, he was sure, would be immense, not to mention the magical drain. ]}

Exactly, that's my line of thinking. And this? It will be ours, not whoever owns the waystation's.

True, an added bonus. I admit I would very much like to support our own than spend everything at the waystations.

Of course you would. It's about looking after ourselves.

Indeed. If we cannot come together and support each other, then who can we count on? It is like at Paradisa - we must come together in some way to survive this.

Hm, and at least our enemy here has a voice, and not just a creepy one that whispers in the night.

Does it? I know that someone does in fact speak to us, but I have seen no real proof to indicate that it is connected to what brought us here. Though I can see little reason why it would not be either.

Hm, suppose you have a point. Still, it's a touch less mysterious.

Or maybe more, depending on how you look at it.

I still cannot grasp why a whole universe of people would want to sit and watch us go about our lives. Surely we are not that interesting - especially between planets.

[onlyanapple]

People will watch just about anything. Even other people sitting in a room. They'll call just about anything entertainment.

[peacockherald]

Really? But... why? If that is the case, why not just go to a park and watch people that way?

[onlyanapple]

Because why go outside when you can do it all from the comfort of your own sofa? Probably in your underwear, too.

It sounds even more ridiculous when you put it that way.

There you are. And these are likely our audience.

_{[ He made a rather disgusted, something involving his tongue and the back of his throat. It was a rare sound for him. ]}

I hope my world never sees a future such as this. At least in Paradisa we could theorize we were taken for the reason of survival, not entertainment.
