So, it's September already, which means my birthday is coming up!

I mean, it's technically February back home, but I'm not gonna complain about celebrating my birthday early. Besides, that seems like way too complicated math to try and figure out what it should be.

[It actually is not that complicated. It's the 28th of February where he's from. C'mon Jojo...]

[But then again, this is the guy who struggled at determining the age of someone who was a baby 50 years ago...]

Anyway, I'm gonna be nineteen on the 27th. Just to give you guys the heads up. You know. [He grins.] In case you wanna get me something.

[He frowns.]

How was I supposed to know what that meant? Some people just aren't all that interested in dating. And it still doesn't explain why you two couldn't just say that.

We both thought it was clear enough, I guess?

Then why say he'd just explain it to me in private? [He folds his arms and leans on the doorframe.] If you already more or less said it, he could have.

Some people keep that sort of thing private. He was being considerate to me.

He doesn't know how open I am about it. Better to be cautious about something like that, you know?

[He's pretty sure she's full of shit. He's giving her a look that says as much. But he doesn't know what other explanation there is, so he's silent for a very long moment as he tries to come up with some kind of alternative. Or at least some way that would be getting her to come clean without forcing it out of her.]

[He's coming up empty-handed though, so he looks down the hallway, letting the breath he was holding go.]

So what? You thought Caesar and I are like that earlier?

Huh- Oh! Yeah, I was wrong. You two act like I do with Bluebird, so I figured... But I guess it's different for men after all?

[He looks at her out of the corner of his eye.]

How do you act with Bluebird?

Oh... Teasing, I guess? Giving each other shit a lot. Occasionally I set her on fire or she beats on me. Friendly stuff?

[yes, that counts as friendly.]

[Well. That sounds a lot like Joseph and Caesar. He can't really deny that. Granted their relationship started off highly antagonistic, so it just seems like that's the only way they know how to be friends with each other.]

[But that's not true and he knows it. They've been close other times without any of that being involved. It's been softer, unusually gentle compared to everything else they've ever shared with each other. And it's been terrifying. Not because it was bad or he found it objectionable, but because Joseph rarely knew what the hell was happening. Or what was going to happen. But there was always a shift he couldn't quite describe or understand both in himself, in Caesar, and between them whenever those moments happened. And those times were beginning to pile up, happening at an increasing frequency without becoming any clearer.]

[He shrugs.]

Caesar and I just have a unique bond because our families have a lot of history together and we faced a lot ourselves together. It's not flirting and it doesn't mean anything other than we're best friends. It's not the same thing.

[He's able to say that smoothly, without any hint that he's beginning to wonder if that's true. But he is because he remembers the restaurant, just before Caesar left angry. He remembers what he thought about the way Caesar was looking at him, was touching him. (Had it not really just been his imagination?) He also remembers how much it stung seeing him making plans with that waitress. Have a good night, Joseph. He folds his arms a little tighter against the memory of that night. He'd put it out of his mind and he thinks that's where it belongs.]

[Sadly, Nightingale knows none of that.]

Yeah... It's different, like I said. I misunderstood. Sorry.

It's no big deal. You don't really know either of us all that well.

Yeah... It feels weird. You've been here a lot longer than most of my teammates were, but it feels like I don't know you nearly as well.

[He tips his head a little to the side.]

... Honestly, when it comes to asking things like that, I never have any ideas.

Well then ask the first question that comes to your mind. It can be anything. Nothing's unimportant to know.

[The first question is one that comes to mind immediately, but it's less about him, and more about her. Still... It's the one that's been eating at her for months.]

What's your family like?

Well, I only know a little bit about my grandfather, Jonathan Joestar. His life is a little bit of a long story, but he died fifty years ago just after he married Granny Erina on a ship going from England to America. He died making sure she got out safely. She never remarried after that and raised my father almost entirely on her own.

Uncle Speedwagon was always around and looked after her since he was best friends with my grandfather. He used to just be a common criminal running around London, but after he met my grandfather, he turned his life around. Now he's got a huge foundation and a lot of money. He's never married or had kids though, so I don't know what's gonna happen to it after he goes.

[Although knowing Speedwagon? He'd have to guess it will go to the Joestars. Provided that Joseph actually manages to survive past the night he left and ended up here.]

Anyway, I never knew my parents. I was a baby when they died. All I know is stuff that Granny and Speedwagon told me while I was growing up. So, Granny's raised me. She's in New York right now with Smokey. Smokey's a kid who stole my wallet. The police were giving him a hard time so I got him out of that scrape and brought him back with me. He didn't have anybody else.

Only Speedwagon really knows what's going on back home. Smokey knows a little more than Granny, but not much. I just don't want her worrying about me.

... You're surprisingly doting.

[Because really, what else can she say? That was a roller coaster from start to finish.]
