[ As promised, in a few days time, Ahsoka and Obi-Wan make their way to the markets. They dress warmly, Obi-Wan procuring a thick cloak for himself. It's hard to feel like a Jedi Master without one.

He watches as Ahsoka flits from stall to stall as he lingers behind her, to correct her on her "bargaining" technique. In a way, they resemble a teenager, saddled with a wiser all-knowing uncle. He strokes his beard in light amusement. This is probably what he needed right now, a reassessment of his priorities, the here and now. ]

Please. Aren't you always bragging to me about how strong you are? You could fight 'em off.

[She has to consider for a minute...]

She's not actually related to me. She's my teammate, from the castle- the last place I was at before this one. I just think of her that way, I guess.

Ah, I think I understand.

Sometimes I think of Anakin as being like my older brother, so-- I get it.

Yeah... I'm glad you do.

But Sparrow's the one who designed the winter uniform, so... At least yours doesn't do fashion? I'm assuming, anyway.

[She hasn't met or even heard of Anakin yet, but guys don't do fashion as much, right?]

Jedi aren't usually much for fashion in general, I'm afraid. Material possessions are frowned upon.

... That sounds... pretty rough. Sorry to hear that.

[her face goes carefully neutral at that.]

[Ahsoka blinks, clearly surprised and a little taken aback.]

... What's rough about it?

It's not like we don't get clothes. The Temple provides us with everything we need. Food. Shelter. Clothing. Education. It'd be selfish to ask for more.

[She says it instantly and firmly.]

Wanting things, having things... That's a normal part of life, isn't it? I get that you're going for the whole ascetic monk lifestyle, from the sounds of it, but...

Maybe that's how it works for normal people. But it's different for Jedi.

Attachments, possessions-- they're the path to the Dark Side.

[Or... that's what she was taught, anyway. Unbidden, an image of Anakin and his now-adult children here come to her mind. Anakin clearly had attachments. And he's not evil. So... maybe the Order is wrong?]

... What do you mean, 'attachments'?

... Didn't we talk about this? During the drinking game.

I explained the Order's stance on attachments, and you said it was the stupidest thing you'd ever heard, and I got really mad about it...?

[She takes a breath, trying to figure out what this means, since she'd started to think of Ahsoka as a friend- but, what does that mean here?]

I still don't get it. Do you... I mean, if you can't have attachments, do you have friends?

... Of course we have friends. It just means-- we must be prepared to let people go. If you get too attached to someone... it can cloud your judgement.

[She shakes her head.] I'm not explaining this very well. What I mean is-- I've been put in situations before where I've needed to choose between saving one person's life, or another's. And that's not uncommon. When that time comes... I can't let my personal feelings get in the way of the greater good.

It's okay. This is all... foreign, to me. I came from a very different place, where... Attachments were a matter of life or death. If no one particularly knew you... You would probably die. Frequently, even.

I can't say I know anything about 'greater good', but... I guess that's why I'm no Jedi.

I'm not always the best at following it either, truth be told. And neither is Anakin.

Let me see if I can give you a better example, though.

A few years ago, Anakin and I crash-landed with Master Secura and Captain Rex on what looked like an uninhabited planet. Anakin was hurt pretty badly-- he was blacking in and out of consciousness. He needed medical attention. Master Secura said our only hope was to find life forms on the planet to either get help or a way home. But it was near sunset-- we had to move fast, or we'd never find anything in time for Anakin to survive the night. I didn't want to leave Anakin's side, though-- he was too hurt to move, and I was worried that if I left him, he'd die.

In the end, though, I had to accept that finding food, shelter, help, and a way home was more important than watching over him. I had to let go of that worry. So I did, and I found what we needed in time. If I hadn't... the outcome might have been a lot worse.

... That's different, isn't it? That's strategy. You picked the option with the highest odds of achieving your goals, and went for it.

Of course. But what if the option with the highest-- or only-- odds of achieving your goals involves the possible or probable death of a comrade? Or yourself?

It's the same principle.

... It sounded like he was in danger either way. I've been there a few times, but...

[she takes a deep breath, looking away.]

You want to continue this conversation somewhere else? Like, inside? I brought you some food to try, so...

Wait-- really? [ She sniffs the air. ] Where? I don't smell anything.

[She holds out a hand.

A covered, steaming bowl appears in it, before vanishing again quickly.]

I'm not going to carry it out in this weather, it'll get cold.

Whoa!! How did you do that?

... Inventory? Everyone in my world can do that.
