[ Sure there are bound to be the occasional less-than-thrilling broadcasts but this one may be a new low, with the camera focused in on a nondescript blob that turns out -- with some acquired distance -- to be a knee. The feed shakes then and there's the loud metallic tap tap of the device being knocked against the framework of one of the generic cots aboard the Marsiva. Tap. Tap. Tap. The only other sound is that of the painfully bland music in the background, without a word being spoken.

At least this inept user finally turns the communicator around to inspect it at another angle, granting any viewer a flash of dark and impractically spiked hair before the camera then focuses on equally shadowed eyes and a severe expression.

No, he's not going to panic. He probably already did that internally before he even tried to figure out the communicator ~~less than successfully~~. Send aid. ]

[ Sasuke will be easy to encounter either sitting on that cot and fiddling with his communicator, exploring the bay thoroughly, or staring with incredible and difficult-to-read intensity out into the murky void of space. Godspeed. ]

I'm not actually trying to piss him off. It's just that it's remarkably easy for me to do naturally.

[ WHY ARE YOU ALREADY DOING THIS ]

So within that time I should feel motivated to change my personality in order to placate someone? I find it important to be honest.

Do you keep him on some sort of short leash? He reacted quickly enough to your interjection.

No. He's just my friend, and he respects me enough to stop.

[ zuko would do the same if allen interjected with him ]

So in that case what he was doing bothered you. [ More than it had bothered Sasuke, anyway. ]

[ zuko opens his mouth, then closes it, looking vaguely... bothered. ]

[ practically family, really, but that seems to be a bit too much to a sasuke who literally just got here and has no memory of probably... having any friends ever, tbh. ]

That, and Allen doesn't know when to shut his mouth.

[ which isn't always a negative thing, and zuko honestly isn't really upset with him. he's sure allen will talk to him later. and maybe zuko had transferred his own post-redemption angst onto the shounen hero, and maybe allen just overstepped boundaries he didn't know existed. his life is a mess. ]

[ That hesitation is now one he shares but without the obvious physical symptoms of it, keeping his emotions carefully under wrap. The word 'friend' has always sparked an abnormal reaction in him -- mainly a negative one -- so he isn't sure how to take hearing it so openly from a near-stranger. ]

You must be disappointed. [ That's probably not the expected reaction either way. ]

[ disappointed in sasuke not remembering, or allen being an idiot? it's probably the first, though zuko is really feeling more irritable over the second, and he shrugs his shoulders. ]

Even though it's taken you ten minutes to get into an argument with someone.

[ and probably more people, though zuko hasn't bothered going through the rest of the conversations yet. ]

But it is annoying that you don't remember anything, because that just means I'm going to have to explain everything. Again.

[ and tolerate questions, and explain to allen no sasuke (probably) won't kill me (maybe). ]

I've been through worse than someone having amnesia. And Allen is always an idiot, so that's not disappointing so much as expected.

He's doing what you're doing. Pre-judging me based upon past experiences. It's not smart but it's expected; I already said I'm not bothered by what he thinks. [ Unless Allen insults the dead family members he liked or insinuates that he's a weak fighter. Then there'll be more significant issues. ]

You can't tell me you're accustomed to some version of me that actually got along with most people peacefully. [ He's mellowed to a point of somewhat casual self-awareness, at least. ]

Maybe I got along with your winning personality.

[ that's totally it, right.

really, though, zuko doesn't want to dump a ton of emotional garbage on sasuke the minute he got here. the actual story will have to wait. for now, he can allowing the poking and prodding until sasuke is more settled. and then he'll talk. ]

In that case you're probably also an asshole. [ Right to the heart of the matter. ]

[ there's what might one day be a tiny smile, before he shrugs. ]

I like to think I've gotten better.

[ i mean, he's grown up a lot. ]

So have I, but it doesn't stop me from saying what I think and meaning it. I'll never be very 'pious'.

I don't get why they have to be mutually exclusive.

[ though sasuke is never going to be a perfect human being, and that's alright, so long as he doesn't run around killing people.

he's quiet for a moment. and seeing as sasuke seems to be calm, stable -- fine, really, given he's just been dumped into space with a ton of people who apparently know who he is, zuko knows the answer to this question. but sasuke seems to be settling into 'blunt is best', so -- ]

Are you going to hurt anyone while you're here?

[ He nearly responds to the first remark but here Zuko is hitting him with that question, raising a brow. ]

How sudden. [ But not in a bad way, just very similar to the path his conversation with Allen had taken towards the end. ]

I can't know the answer to that yet. Since I assume it's what you're asking, I'll say I don't have any plans to. Any of my actions would be in self-defense or if I somehow got a hand on any of those that brought us here.

Then that's enough for me.

[ simply, without bothering to ask for details, or requirements, or offering threats.

but there's a slight pause before zuko settles back against the wall -- he's sitting on the floor of his personnel room, and he rests his elbows on his knees. ]

Everyone deserves a second chance.

[ including zuko, himself, which is still something he's trying to wrap his mind around, even though the war is long since over. ]

No one here is expecting you to be anyone but yourself. Which might be a good thing, or a bad thing, depending on who you talk to. But so long as you're on the right path now, then that's what matters to me.

[ and, really, anyone else worth their salt. ]

[ Sasuke listens quietly to words he absolutely needs to hear but also intensely wants to reject, to say it's less of a second chance and more of a fifteenth. He hadn't just chosen to leave Konoha again after the war because he wanted to gather answers about the world, or because facing Naruto was difficult after their battle -- though both of those things are true. There had also been an element of him not knowing exactly where he belonged or how to live peacefully amongst people he'd threatened.

A new twist on survivor's guilt, maybe? He'd been willing to die after the war, after all. ]

You're speaking like you identify with the concept. [ Deflecting it onto him instead is just easier right now while everything's still very fresh for him. ]

I said we had things in common.

[ unless sasuke wants to hear it, in which case zuko feels comfortable telling it. but even zuko can recognize that it's probably a lot. ]

I don't plan to stay here long enough for my reputation to matter, but I'd assume those are words you've heard before.
