Teagan? Teagan! [ The man on the camera is young, handsome, and looking a bit put out to be where he is. This isn't his castle! What is this place? He's also sort of looking away from the screen, not fully aware he's broadcasting. He mostly thinks he's talking to himself. ]

I'm sure I've got a very important meeting with someone who will be very angry when I don't show up - not that I care much if I'm making the Orlesians angry, it's sort of funny when their faces get all red and they start trying not to swear, but still...

Have I been kidnapped? Has someone kidnapped me? I'm pretty sure kidnapping the king is treason. I can have your head for that. [ He doesn't sound so much angry as... vaguely confused and disoriented. ] Off with your head. Whenever I figure out who you are, I suppose.

Point taken, I suppose I've started to over look a lot with magic. It fixes so much you forget things could be horrible.

I can't say magic fixes much where I come from. Mostly it just makes things worse.

[ Sure, there are some nice mages. But magic on the whole has screwed up a lot of his world. ]

Oh there's that to, but to be fair magic is a sword, a tool. It greatly depends on the hand using it as to what it does.

No, I don't know Thedas, I'm from England.

So there's magic in your world, too? I don't suppose you have anything like darkspawn.

Well, we have Deatheaters. they are followers of a dark wizard and they are awful. They like to hurt people and dominate other wizards. That's what's on the rise back home for me, it's a war coming I think.

You mean, these are people? And you call them Death Eaters?

People might be generous, but yes. They are wizards who chose to be dark and use their magic to hurt other people. We didn't name them, they thought it was clever to call themselves that I am sure.

Wow. That's... special. I mean, it's like calling yourself Evil McVillainpants.

[Well that did it, she burst into a light and lilting sort of laughter which she tried to quickly stifle behind her hand.] It is something of a clue isn't it? I have gotten the impression that subtlety isn't in their nature.

[ Score. She laughed. Score one for the royal bastard. ]

Well, that should make them easy to spot, right? Do you have Templars in your world? Get a squad of Templars after them, take care of the problem in no time.

[She was still recovering from that outburst but managed to have it down to just a smile when she spoke next.]

The black robes and hoods and hideous masks don't hurt either. And we had Templars, but they were knights from a very long time ago and really they went off to wars with other cultures and protected holy relics. I don't think they'd do us much good.

Really? So you don't have anyone trained to stop rogue mages?

We are called witches and wizards rather than mages. We do! They're called Aurors, brave folks the lot of them. They go toe to toe with the worst and face killing curses everyday.

We have witches, too! That's what we call hedge mages, sometimes.

[ He tilts his head curiously. ]

Killing curses? That does sound dangerous. What about abominations, do they fight those as well?

Hedge mage? I don't know what that is. And I'm not sure what an abomination is, as far as a being or creature.

We have all sorts of magical creatures though, unicorns, centaurs, dragons, merpeople.

I guess it's a nice way of saying apostate. The ones who never go to the Circle to learn how to be proper mages? There's lots of them in Rivain, from what I hear.

Don't you have demons in your world?

I suppose there are witches and wizards that never make it to school. There are several schools for magic but some must not go. I've never really thought about it before.

Like.. biblical demons? Evil spirits fro, hell? No, we've got bad eggs but nothing like that. Most of the really bad things in my world are other people and beasts who know no better.

That's, uh, sort of illegal where I come from. Magic is dangerous, so all mages have to go to the Circle to learn how to control it.

[ He gives her a funny look. ]

Demon demons. From the Fade. You know, the place we go when we dream? They target mages, try to possess them.

Illegal? Wizards make other wizards go to this Circle?

Oh, dreams? Well no, I mean I've had nightmares before but nothing like another world or anything. All the really awful things already exist in our world. Deatheaters can possess people, make them do their bidding.

Everyone makes mages go? It's the law.

The Fade is our world, just a... different part of it? You know, the opposite of the physical part. Where the spirits are, and where magic comes from. Where do you get magic if you don't have the Fade?

I don't think I like the sound of that. It sounds like military drafting or something.

Well I've heard of people seeing beyond the earthly realm, but it's not something I put much stock into. We don't have a thing like the Fade. Magic is everywhere, it's like life. But a few people are born with the ability to see and use it for what it is. A lot of families are pure blood, they've been magical for ages. Not me though, I'm a one off for my family.

Er, well, it's not like being pressed into service for a lord. It's a school. Mages go there to learn how to use their magic. They get room and board, a good education, it's a lot more than a lot of people manage. It's a place where they're safe from the world, and the world is safe from them.

Maybe it's different in your world, but in mine, mages run amok is not a pretty sight. I know, I've seen it.

Are people afraid of them then? It sounds awful for both sides, I mean going to school is good but being kept away from people doesn't sound good at all.

I think it must be, because when a witch or wizard go bad it is like when a muggle goes bad, they are just bad inside magic or no. The ones with magic are just more dangerous.

...you don't have anything against magic, do you? [And she sounded kinda of hopeful that he didn't.]
