[The bunks are filling up, but the new faces just keep appearing!

Are you a travel-weary passenger having trouble keeping your crew roster straight? Perhaps you are a fresh new recruit, finding themselves dumped into a new (and much less shiny) home. Or, maybe you've been around for a little bit and just haven't bothered meeting the other weirdos on this ship yet--what is their problem, anyway?

Well, this is the place for you!

All new passengers from the last few Shuffles, especially those who haven't met their crews yet, are welcome to post starter-comments here to invite those living on and visiting your ship to come and interact. Newbies could be just arriving on the ship, busying around where others can find them, or you can offering multiple options for interaction--however you'd like to set up your thread is fine. Just make sure to include the name of your ship in the header, so your crewmates can easily find you!

My augment tells me I'm tactical. Whether that has any practical role on the ship remains to be seen, so for now I assist where I can.

[By staying out of the way, mostly. Nobody likes a sick person coughing in their space.]

I assume everything has already been explained to you.

A lot of it I guess. I figure I'll pick the rest up as I go. So far I think the augment is my least favorite part. [Or missing the people she left and wondering if they are okay. Or the food. It's a toss up.]

The augment is the least favourite part for many. [She doesn't care either way, but she can well understand why people would want it gone.] Has it assigned you a role aboard the ship?

Pilot. So glad they taught me things I already know. [Though it would have taken her time to figure out how to work this particular sort of ship. Time she can apparently skip now. Also, probably not exactly like flying a jet within an atmosphere to be fair.]

You've flown in space before? [She misunderstands slightly. But then, Makie's knowledge of flying is purely the fleet, lmao. She skipped right over the whole existence of aeroplanes.]

That might come in very useful, already having the skill beyond what they deigned to give you.

No, just in the sky. I'm sure I could have gotten the hang of it.

[She tilts her head.] Useful how?

Those who have learn a skill naturally are more likely to be resourceful with it. Many of the pilots here have never flown before. If you have, it might be an advantage one day.

On that very special day when suddenly space is suddenly full of needles and we have to fly through the eyes of them. [Joking though it almost sounds like something that would happen at the last place she lived.]

So where are you from?

[She smiles at that.]

Edo, Japan. I believe it's called Tokyo in more modern times. [Long history has taught her she's well behind everyone else.]

It was Toyko in my time, but I knew the reference. [Logan taught her more than just fighting.]

I've been there. [She says this part in Japanese.]

[Her eyes widen slightly in appreciation. It's been a while since she's heard her own language.]

They changed the name some hundred years after my time, so I imagine it's very different there now. [And switching herself:] How fluent are you?

You imagine correctly. I would hope my world wouldn't be the most common example though. [Seeing as how it's in ruins.]

It's not as good as my Russian, but you tell me. [It's been awhile since she spoke it regularly, so she's a little rusty and her accent is poor, but she's hitting the right words with only a couple of brief pauses to think of the word she wanted.] I can also understand more than I can say. [Of course that would have been true with the augment anyway.]

[There are also certain differences between modern day Japanese and her own; not enough to mar Kitty's meaning but enough for Makie to discern them with interest. Language does change over time.]

It's certainly much more fluent than most foreigners I've met. [Most of whom were sailors in port for a night or two, trying to impress her with stuttering and hesitant words. The Itto-Ryu had a Dutch swordsman, however, who spoke passingly well.] It's nice to hear my own language from a fellow shipmate. Did you travel to Japan on business?

Thanks. It's good to have someone to practice with. And sure, you could say it was business. There were some missions there. [Not the religious kind.]

I would always be happy to help you practice. [The missions give her pause, but she's learned enough to know how much the world changes over time and in different places.]

Were you a soldier? Or something of the kind? [A woman working in such a capacity is no longer a surprise to her.]

Or something. [She pauses, searching for the word, but decides to run with English.] Vigilante would be closer. And sometimes assassin fits. [She waits for a reaction, wondering if that offer to practice is off the table.]

[There's no judgment in her expression. If anything, Makie looks far more intrigued, a flicker of recognition in what this girl is saying.]

Vigilante... [She's never heard that word before, though.] I assume you're someone who operates outside the law entirely, even if I don't quite know the meaning.

[She nods.] That's what it means, but there's no law. Not anymore. We're just the last line of defense against people being slaughtered or worse.

Government has broken down? [That's... exactly what Anotsu fears will happen in the long run, and one of the fiercest reasons behind his forming the Itto-Ryu. But to this extent?] Who is responsible?

There's still a stronghold in western Europe, but pretty wide-scale collapse. Apocalypse.

[Oh. We're talking about far more than Japan. It's hard to wrap her mind around that concept, given her lack of knowledge of the world outside her much smaller one, but what Kitty's talking about sounds devastatingly vast.]

Is there any hope of recovery?

[She shrugs.] There's always hope. [There was also a pretty drastic plan in the works before she was pulled out. It was both an ending and fresh start. Possibly the worst and best thing in which she ever participated and not something she tells as easily as the rest of it.]

Anyway, enough about depressing homeworlds. Or at least about mine.

[She knows avoidance when she hears it, and Makie lets the subject drop. It's enough that Kitty shared as much as she did.]

My own home is somewhat displaced now. [She offers it as a subject change.] I may have come from Edo, but my heart belongs to Adstringendum. It is also a ruin, but I'm told there is vast improvement in its future. And there is... I have someone close to me there.

Adstringendum? It's a place like this one? People are caught and kept? [If so that's a story she can very much relate to.]

No. It is a place that people accidentally fall. There was a mistake by the people that lived there that caused others like us to simply turn up there one day. Then we couldn't find our way home.

I'm told that has changed now, and people can travel freely from there to other places with the help of one of the residents.
