Let the games begin!
[several days late, as has been the trend lately, the Shuffle's transmission plays for the Fleet.
...or, it tries anyway. the music doesn't even make it--just a punch of static with sad, scattered pieces of musical notes trying to struggle their way through.
when Diamond's voice is finally heard, it's only intelligible in three little bites.]
--Three disappearing from-- ... --new faces, so-- ... --Captain Halliwell--...
[and then the music blends strangely with other sounds, like someone flipping idly through broken radio stations. it takes some time for anything to come in clear, and every frequency turns up the same interference. it isn't until several minutes later that one signal suddenly stutters into clarity, and music begins to play.
wherever you are, they are playing your song! and if there are multiple people in the room, maybe the speakers nearest to each person are playing different songs, each specific to the closest passenger. and after the signal connects, the speakers will continue to play whatever song they started with, even if different passengers move toward or away from them, and will only play something else when the controls are messed around with. and the signals and machinery will continue to behave in this way sporadically, all through the month.]
ooc: the musical madness has begun! feel free to use this post as a mingle for interactions relating to shuffle day and the ensuing musical chaos. if you have any questions, please post them to the January ooc post!

Do we even have guns on the ship? Like, if something doesn't beam on and try to kill us in our sleep or anything.
no subject
Yep. We're prepared for space... battles. If it comes to that.
[He turns around, careful not to point the bad end at anyone, and loads the thing. It makes a satisfying noise, and Varric lets out a low whistle.]
Not bad. Heavier than my usual, but I'll take it. [He leaves the safety on, then slings the rifle over his shoulder.]
no subject
Your usual?
no subject
[He inspects the intensity switch, but doesn't flip it over. Non-lethal is good for now.]
I'll come for you, sweetheart. Just you wait.
no subject
You want one of these over one of those?
no subject
[He looks at it. Looks at his gun. He just can't win here.]
Thanks, I think, but I don't want the lady to get jealous. Besides, you just pulled that out of your ass. I've had bad experiences with that kind of thing.
no subject
Both of you hear that singing, don't you? I'm not imagining it?
[That song playing - she'd know Relares anywhere. They'd taught her this one early on in her old village, before everything happened...but surely there aren't any Ferines here?
Then she notices the crossbow and all the other weapons.]
Are...are we being attacked?
no subject
[ Chris scoffs, lets the crossbow hang off his finger from the grip and it drops, disappears before it even touches the ground. He turns when Shirley appears in the doorway, brows raised. ]
Maybe, maybe not. We're just being careful. [ He swallows, turns to glance at Varric. ] It's still the same song, right? Baby Mine? Is that playing through the whole ship now?
no subject
[Yeah, no. Varric is not going to use some FAKE MAGIC WEAPON instead of Bianca. He adjusts the carrying strap on the rifle. It's solid, and it's going to stay that way.]
I think we're all hearing different things. What did you hear, Roses?
no subject
Shirley frowns at the question; she's not sure what Baby Mine is, but it's sure not what she heard earlier. She tries to listen to the song again to confirm the words, but now that she's paying attention to the music in here she's sure that it's different from what was outside.]
I heard something different from this in the lab. It's an old song I learned when I was little, about two people swimming together.
[She also eyes the weapons wondering if they really are going to see battle, although there's nothing there for her. Her quill's already lost, but at least her eres still work.]
no subject
Something old to you. Something religious to Varric. Something... [ He shakes his head. ] ... something old to me, too. Are they just things from our past?
no subject
If they wanted to mess with us, they're doing a pretty good job.
[Chris is obviously having a hard time. It sounds like a lullaby to Varric, and that can only mean one thing: total fucking pain. His own parents were kind of assholes, but he knows issues when he sees them. As promised, though, he doesn't say anything-- he just reaches out to set a hand on his arm.
It's a brief thing, and he lets go after a moment.]
I'm thinking we should get the hell out of here. We already left that snow planet, but there might be something else. Like an outpost. Let's go back to the bridge and look.
no subject
[Shirley has to admit she's actually a little interested, but it would be better to have more information first. This could turn out to be malevolent as easily as not.]
no subject
Knowing where the music is coming from wouldn't help help us get out of the way. None of us here can steer the ship. [ Trust him, he's tried. ]
no subject
I think we need some kind of special... whatever for that. We can use the shuttle if we decide to bail.
[Varric shuffles out into the hall. They can talk on the way.]
no subject
How many shuttles do we have ready?
[She didn't take note of the exact number before when looking around, but it certainly wasn't many for what's supposed to be a five-person ship.]
no subject
[ Chris follows almost a bit eagerly when they leave, hands moving in front of him as if to toy with a ring he isn't wearing. It's a nervous gesture. ]
One's enough to hold two people from what I saw and this thing in my head says I know how to fly one, so we should be fine.
no subject
Really? You're not going to make a crack about how we can probably fit two and a half in one shuttle?
You continue to surprise me, Prickly.
no subject
[Addressing Varric there, of course.]
no subject
Hold up, Shirley. Where would we even go? Besides, you should probably drive. I'm not sure Varric can reach the consoles.
no subject
[He flips his collar and continues down the hall.]
Let's check the bridge before we go anywhere.
no subject
...Actually, nah. Shirley does go on towards the bridge, but she also tosses in a teasing comment.]
You two are having fun, aren't you? But maybe it should wait a bit.
no subject
Right, you're right. Let's see if we can get an idea where all this is coming from. Any of you played with the bridge controls yet?
no subject
Nope. I didn't want to blow anything up.
no subject
Me neither. I've spent most of my time in the lab. You haven't either, Chris?
