[There's a ~~Darth Maul cosplayer~~ tall and annoyed demon pacing back and forth, playing almost nervously with his hands like there's a ring that should be there but isn't.]

Another reality show? I thought the last one was bad enough.

[He stops his pacing to look up at the ceiling, seeming to direct his anger at that.]

Leo! Leo Wyatt! Orb your whitelighter ass down here and do something useful for once!

[He waits a moment before he throws up his hands in frustration and goes back to pacing.]

Great, fine. Alright, you've got me here. Point me at whoever or whatever you want me to kill so we can get this over with.

[ Chris doesn't relax, just sits back and crosses his arms and tries not to explode too powerfully at Varric. He's listening. Chris needs to take advantage of that, even if it means admitting what he was hoping to work around. ]

That's my father. You are not going to vanquish my father.

Shit! Seriously?

[And then it dawns on his face that Chris is also part demon, maybe, probably.]

Shit. No, I'm not going to shoot your dad! I just-- look, demons. Demons are bad on my world. I told you why. If you say he's not a bad guy, I'll take your word for it-- he doesn't look like a Thedas demon anyway.

How do demons even have kids?

[ Something just kind of drains out of Chris at the reaction. Instead of bracing himself for a coming tidal wave, it looks like he's... well, he's a kid who hasn't had a chance to grow up but did it anyway because he needed to. At least it's obvious he's relieved. ]

He's not. Bad. He's not a bad guy. [ He takes a moment, collects himself and then gives a half-laugh to go with a half-shrug. ] They're not spirits, for one thing. They have bodies just like the rest of us. It's kind of common practice for demons to have half-demon children so their kids can blend in better, but... Dad's not a full demon to start with, anyway.

[Varric considers, then pours another shot of Floot Loops-sponsored vodka and offers it to Chris.]

That's different. Different is good.

[A pause.]

For the record, demon or not, you're still part of this crew. Don't go getting any stupid ideas like, oh, everyone on this ship hates you just because of something you were born with.

[ His face screws up in obvious, momentary confusion. Stop anticipating him, dammit. After a small hesitation, Chris takes the offered drink with some bemusement. ]

To be honest, that's usually more than enough for anyone else to want me gone. I mean—I would never do anything to hurt people, especially not you guys, but... [ He goes quiet, staring into the brightly colored alcohol. Somehow just that small kindness has left him rather adrift. He looks up, gives a wry twist of his lips. ] Thanks.

I know you wouldn't. [Being quarter or half demon or whatever probably comes with its own problems. He knows that's going to bite him in the ass sooner or later, but he can't-- he can't just look at this kid and tell him to get out.

He sighs inwardly.]

You're a good kid.

[ Chris takes a sip of the drink, trying not to flinch away at the expectedly fruity taste. It's kind of really gross with the burn of strong booze behind it, but he'll live. This is kind of completely blindsiding him and he needs the moment to put his attention anywhere else. ]

So we're... we're good on Dad? [ Yep, that's enough talking about Chris. He can't handle this much acceptance out of nowhere; even with his family, it took months to convince him that it's okay to just be accepted. From people he hardly knows? It doesn't even make sense. ] He's the one who—if I'm not going to hurt anyone, it's because I learned it from him.

We're good. [He blinks at Chris over his glass.] Did he teach you sarcasm, too?

[Here we go, smartass territory. This is stuff they're used to.]

[ Chris scoffs. ]

That comes from both sides.

[ ... mostly the Halliwell side, not Turner, though. Turner side is mostly just completely terrible and inappropriate jokes. ]
