Those things, yeah. Nothing like the giant deer from that one planet, and those tall birds from the stations, though. Just... little normal things.

Mostly little birds, cats and dogs, stuff like that.

[whoa, pausing in drinking to really think and chat for a minute. not that it will last long, but still.]

[He doesn't need to hear about titans, so she'll refrain from talking about them.]

What's the place where you're from like? Are you from the countryside? The city?

[he can't help but laugh at that.]

...That's always going to be a weird question to me.

There really isn't any countryside. It's just a big giant city. Everyone stays inside the walls.

[She laughs too, absentmindedly, but she's focusing more now.]

Is that so? Why do they stay stuck in there, huh?

[she can focus, while he unfocuses and drinks.]

It's super-dangerous outside. It's all big deadly wilderness, and there's like... big monsters and stuff.

Oh, yeah? [Lightly] What kind of monsters?

I guess it depends on who you believe. Some people say there's giants and gods out there, or just really huge versions of regular animals. Like drakes as big as houses.

And some people say that it's just the trees that will kill you, or just all the types of creatures that aren't allowed in the city.

Giants, huh? [Amused. Of course that means more to her than she knows.]

So how do they keep all of you safe? Is there a wall?

Oh, yeah. A big giant wall around everything, and then there's this, like... barrier thing over that. And they have all the gates guarded and watched and everything.

[Sounds like home.]

What do you mean, a barrier?

It's like a shell, but you can see through it. It's either, like... electricity or arcana or something.

Who made your wall, kiddo?

Oh, I don't know.

I never thought about it.

Do you know what it's made of?

...Energy?

[it really is his best guess.]

I mean the wall itself, kiddo.

Oh.

[he laughs, drunkenly abrupt about it.]

I don't know. I've never seen it.

Really? How big is this city of yours?

[She will just pour him more alcohol. Keep that glass topped up and the words coming.]

It's really big! Like... it's pretty much the only thing there is, so it's really huge.

[and he keeps sucking down the drinks, them disappearing into his face as quick as the words are coming out of it.]

That's why it's so weird when people keep asking what city I'm from or what it's like. There are different territories inside the city, but it's still all just one city.

...There's some stuff outside, but it hardly counts.

It can't be as big as the whole world, you know. You'd have more things inside the walls then out! Would that make any sense?

[She laughs, imagining it, and takes a swallow of her own drink. Vile stuff but at least it does its job.]

[it's clear Nel's not even tasting it. he may have even burned out most of those receptors years ago.]

Well, yeah... I mean, there are miles and miles and miles of trees out there... but there's no stuff.

No people or cars or cities or anything. That's all gone.

Ah, so it was there. And why did it disappear?

Oh, yeah there used to be tons of stuff. Other cities and everything.

[he tips his head back to drain the last drops of his current drink, and then stays sagged back in his seat for a minute, like he's exhausted. the alcohol is just filling up his limbs with warm water and they feel heavy right now.]

...And I guess the wilderness got it all. And there was some wars and stuff. It was a long time ago.

How sad... how sad.

[It is sad. She stares into her own glass. At least there's a bit left in their bottle; she tops off her booze. Nel will have to take care of himself if he wants more, though.]

And you've never even seen the wall...

[with glazed eyes, he watches her mood begin to sink. and after a delayed bit of time, he pulls himself forward to lean on the table again.]

It's not sad. It's fine, really.

And what would I want to see the wall for?
