this is a game-wide mingle and the timeframe isn't super-important, so throw in with whatever you want! play war games, go shopping for gas masks, get lost in the wilderness, hide up in the Iskaulit and refuse to set foot on the moon, anything goes.

[ kate (who considers herself to be futzing adorable in her mask) shoulders a particularly non-lethal looking paintball gun. she carries it against the back of her neck, with her wrists draped over either end.

and when she recognizes kitty, she slows down. with a jerk of her head, she invites the other young woman to join. ]

Come on. I could use a wingwoman. [ muffled, but friendly. ]

[Hearing everyone speak through the masks does take some getting used to, but the people of the moon really know what they are doing with that technology at least. One of the trickier things is recognizing people who she only ever met over video with part of their faces covered and their voice somewhat altered. She manages to make the connection with Kate though.]

I guess I could. [As if she hadn't already been thinking about it.] Who are we [that's a yes] up against?

That's a great question. [ kate's eyes are expressive. bright, wide, and they telegraph more of her mood (perhaps) than her mouth does.

she turns her body and looks at the rest of the 'crew' heading for the forest. ] Buddy stepped on someone else's foot, I guess? And they weren't having such a great day, I guess, because it all devolved into handing out paintball rifles and chanting. My participation is collateral damage.

Well, as long as there's solid reason. [Which there isn't, but luckily she comes with her own.] Wouldn't mind seeing that marksmanship of yours though. [She'd smirk, but it's lost in the mask anyway.]

I admit, [ she touches the hollow of her throat. ] Guns aren't normally my thing. But I still put on a show.

[ she jerks her head. ] Consider yourself recruited onto my team.

Guess I need to grab a gun. How do you think the locals feel about phasing through paintball fire? [Her Logan took care to teach her a wide variety of weapons even if she normally used her claws. She can definitely fire a gun, but her level of actual combat experience with one is a lot lower.]

All is fair in love and war games, Kitty. Especially if you're on my team.

[ kate grins. she plays along: ] Trust me -- you'd know if I was asking you out.

[That gets a laugh.] Well, now I'm intrigued. I hope there would have been a corsage too. Corsages and paintball just feel right.

[ a wrinkled nose. ] I'll pass. On the corsage, at least. Not on the paintball.

No, they'd hunt us down if we passed on paintball. They take projectile paint seriously here.

Do they ever. But -- y'know, it's kind of nice to take the life-and-death out of it. For once.

No disagreements there. Haven't really had that in the mix much for awhile now though.

I'm -- I'm sorry. [ she speaks around the empty space in the conversation: the hard reality of kitty's home, and how unlike it is to a timeline kate knows so well. one where things do often suck, but where she still gets to go out dancing with her friends on her nights off. ]

Head in the game, Hawkeye. There's no sorry in paintball. [And it's not your fault and she's in a better place now. A disgusting polluted moon on a reality show holding her against her will. Just this side of paradise.]

Right. [ she checks the cartridge on her gun. ] Love and war-games. Like I said.

[ kate jerks her head towards a small bustling cart -- these sort of set-ups never seem far away from the beginning of a game. ] Get yourself some gear and we'll head into the woods.

[She appreciates the concern. Really. She just isn't always good at accepting it. Kitty picks up one of the guns, testing the balance and giving it a test fire to toward the ground just to check that it works.]

Ready for the paint massacre.

[ and with that, the games begin. initially, members of both teams are ushered towards the treeline. one team has yellow bandannas -- the other has purple. and kate seems a little miffed to be on the yellow team, but at least kitty's with her.

they plunge into the woods, and kate sticks close to kitty. strength in numbers, after all. ] Do you wanna take point?

[Well, if it's not going to be blue it might as well be gold. Or, you know, yellow.] Works for me. Just remember not to stand behind me and think I'll block fire. [Because she can always phase herself and once the paint balls are free of the gun they'll solidify, ready to hit anyone in their path. It's almost too easy. It makes you wonder why she's a close range fighter instead of a projectile weapon fighter.]

No worries, Kitty. I'm not in the habit of using people shields. [ guns aren't her thing, ordinarily. but it doesn't feel foreign in her hands. she eases her palm against the grip, and (for the time) keeps her finger off the trigger. it doesn't matter if it's merely paint; discipline must be maintained. ]

When you put it like that, it does seem like it would be pretty messed up.

We definitely frown on that sorta thing in the Young Avengers.

-- Billy could probably do it, but I think I'd still feel... [ she trails off with a shrug. ] What if it suddenly didn't work?

[ that's the hitch with being a non-powered hero: you don't always trust the constancy of someone else's abilities. ]
