[boy oh boy, isn't everyone just so excited to explore this... charming... place...?

this is a game-wide mingle and the timeframe isn't super-important, so throw in with whatever you want! play war games, go shopping for gas masks, get lost in the wilderness, hide up in the Iskaulit and refuse to set foot on the moon, anything goes.

[ He frowns lightly, sensing it through the Force. It's no good to begin lightsaber training without the proper mind set. ]

Something you'd like to talk about before you get started?

[Considering he doesn't exactly know what the proper mindset is, Finn misses the direction of the question entirely. Still, there's probably plenty that he should tell Obi-Wan, so he pauses a moment to think about what to start with. Running the gamut from by the way I was a Stormtrooper to hey is it true only people with the Force can use a lightsaber, he decides to settle on the most obvious one.]

Tell you the truth, I don't really know much about lightsabers. They're a Jedi's weapon, and I know what they can do, but until a little while ago I never even saw one in action. So--where should I start? Can you help me?

[ Finn sounded like Anakin when he was younger. Albeit, Anakin was never this verbose. ]

Before that, we need to do something else. We need to clear your mind. You bring your enemies with you into battle when you use the Force.

[Fff, there go those Jedi, thinking he has the Force again ~~spoilers: he totally does~~. Finn bites his lip.]

Right. Clear my mind.

[Finn does have an idea what to do here: he drops into a relaxed stance and closes his eyes briefly. At first he pictures himself in a rank and file of other white-armored soldiers, but he concentrates on himself alone. You bring your enemies with you. First the other faceless soldiers fade away. Then the chrome-colored captain. Then the shadowy figures at the head of the troop, until all that's left is him. When he opens his eyes, he's in a much calmer state.]

[ Obi-Wan nods with approval. ]

That's a good start. Now. You'll use my lightsaber and I'll use this.

[ He tosses his lightsaber at him and takes out his bo staff. ]

[Finn catches it neatly, looking for all the world like he does this every day. He examines it carefully, though, noting how it's different from the one he'd used before, and when he's ready he activates it with that telltale sound. He holds it perpendicular to the ground, in the way that seems most natural to him.]

All right. How should I start?

[ Shien. Ahsoka's form. Interesting place to start, though the Form itself was all over the place. It's not his preferred type and it might not be the best fit for Finn, but only time will tell. ]

Now, you attack me.

[ He twirls the staff before resting it in the standard Soresu stance. ]

Okay.

[Reminding himself that even though he's the one with the live weapon, he doesn't really have to worry about hurting the Jedi, Finn first observes. Always a quick study, he makes several swirling feints at first to make sure he has the balance of the weapon; following that, he presses an attack. His form is of course totally undeveloped, but it's reminiscent of fighting with a long mace or short baton more than anything else.]

[ Like most beginners, Finn clearly telegraphs his attacks, making it easy for Obi-Wan to block. Obi-Wan avoids attacking at all, letting Finn show him the extent of what he knows. Soresu is the ultimate defense. He doesn't get tired, he doesn't even break a sweat. And his staff moves with him, an extension of Obi-Wan's self, a calm, unfettered movement, not bound by anything. ]

[The more he sees of the defense, the more impressed he gets; it's immediately obvious that, injured or not, Kylo Ren's style didn't hold a candle next to this fluid grace. Finn finds himself grinning despite his total lack of landing any kind of solid blow.

He doesn't talk, though, instead testing out different kinds of moves to see if he can notice any kind of hole or flaw in the form. Nothing yet, but he doesn't get frustrated like so many Stormtroopers do. Instead he sinks into an almost trance. He's never been in a fight like this and it's thrilling in a very new way.]

[ Impressive. It's not easy to lose yourself in the Force, to not get frustrated by the limits set by the body or training. Finn does - could be a good student. He wonders if he should send him down Ahsoka's path - or even Anakin's. Until he finds his own form with his own style.

To say Obi-Wan is a Soresu master would be inaccurate. Obi-Wan is the Soresu master now, reinventing it with his own style. Like the Jedi, the Code is what they follow, the rules are what they change. ]

[If he were to think about it, he'd say he already knows he doesn't have any training and he's only here to learn, so why should he get frustrated when he's just starting out?

After a good set of throwing himself at that staff-wall, though, Finn steps back. He's starting to get a twinge in his back, and he doesn't want to pull anything.]

You really are good.

[ He drops his stance briefly with a smile. ]

Years of training. You show a lot of promise. I've trained with many Jedi, but many have trouble attaining that state of calm that you've showed.

Your stance is more Shien than Soresu. I can recommend another teacher if that's what you wish to pursue.

Really? [What is praise? Is it something you eat? That is to say, Finn's visibly thrown off balance (though pleased) by the compliment.] But that's just from practice with other weapons. You gotta stay calm with a blaster or you'll shoot all over the place.

[~~This may explain why Finn is in the top percentile of Stormtroopers in his class.~~]

I--can't say I ever heard of either of them. You're the one who can make the call. But I like what you did, how you didn't let anything get past you.

Soresu.

[ Obi-Wan's demeanor changes, to one of a teacher. He crosses his arms. ]

Soresu is the ultimate defense, to use your opponent's weaknesses against them. It does prologue the battle, but it leaves you in control and very little up to chance. There are other techniques - for power, speed, flexibility. What you choose to excel in is up to you.

Soresu. [He deactivates the lightsaber and offers it back.]

If things go the way I want them to, I'm not going to seek out a fight. All I'd need to do is hold someone off until my friends can get away, or get help.

Defense--maybe flexibility--is what I'd need for that.

[ Obi-Wan takes it back gratefully. ]

Ahsoka uses Shien, the stance you started with. She's your best option if you want to try that kind of style. Ask around. Experiment. Then you can come back when you've decided.

Shien. Soresu. And--are there any others I ought to look at? Luke Skywalker wanted to show me something, but--

[But he's gone now, almost as soon as Finn had been shuffled.]

[ He considers this. ]

I don't know if Luke even has a Form. Those things . . . might have been lost when the War ended.

[Finn nods.]

There was a lot that was lost. But that doesn't mean it can't be found again. Not if we try.

[ He smiles, but it's faint and strained. ]

Well, perhaps it's best to leave the past where it is.

Some of it? Yeah, it would. But you can't tell me it was all bad back then.

[Even if they had been in a war.]

I wouldn't. Some even called it the age of heroes. Grand titles and epic battles all over the galaxy.

[ But all he would trade easily. ]

[Finn exhales sharply.]

You know? It's all I ever trained for--the epic battles, I mean--but I'd be just as happy if I never saw one again. Sometime you got to fight. I know that better than I used to, and that's why I asked for your help. But what I really want is for it not to have to be that way.

You were trained as a trooper, correct?

[ Like the clones, and yet unlike them. The younger clones . . . like Waxer and Boil would talk like this. ]
