[boy oh boy, isn't everyone just so excited to explore this... charming... place...?

this is a game-wide mingle and the timeframe isn't super-important, so throw in with whatever you want! play war games, go shopping for gas masks, get lost in the wilderness, hide up in the Iskaulit and refuse to set foot on the moon, anything goes.

[ kate's waiting inside the infrastructure, but just outside the museum itself. so her mask is pushed down around her neck, kinda like a bright pink kerchief.

she doesn't look impatient. in fact, her shoulders are leaned back against a pillar and she's perusing a brief pamphlet for who-knows-what. probably a donation plea from the museum itself. every so often, she glances upwards in case laura's approaching. ]

[Laura had a habit of just...turning up, which is why Kate probably only had two or three second's warning before she'd notice the tiny girl coming to a stop near her, looking from her up at the museum and back.]

Hi.

[ she tries to look cool with it -- as though the drop hadn't been had on her. except it had, and her surprise shows in only the slight tension along her jaw. not an unfriendly tension. not at all. just...habitual.

she smiles. ] I'm glad you came. [ kate crumples the brochure. ]

[Laura could be kind of like Batman when she wanted to. Part of her just wanted to see how people reacted to things, really.]

[At the comment though, she just nodded.]

I was curious.

About art? [ a knowing look. it was a specious sort of excuse to get her out here, and kate knows it. but she doesn't really have much reason to lie about it. ] Or about me?

[Did she just smile faintly?]

Yes.

[ kate glances up at a wide-and-colourful landscape piece filling the gallery's entrance. into its bright colours, she can read a kind of nostalgia -- a desire for a better, more natural world. ache for air that isn't poisoned. it gives her the chills to look at artwork that treats nature like a fantasy space.

slowly, her arms cross. ] Look, I don't like being one of those girls who calls up another girl just so they can talk about a guy but -- [ kate tries to catch laura's eye. ] I wanna talk about Wolverine.

[ even now, she can't bring herself to call him logan. ]

[Laura started to move into the building proper when Kate kept talking, bringing her up short, and after a second she turned to look at her carefully. Wolverine was an Avenger, which presumably meant he and Kate knew each other. But...hm.]

About what?

Time gets pretty wonky here, right? [ kate isn't a naturally delicate person, but she understands the need to tread a little> softly. ] So -- first off, what do you remember about him from back home? What was he up to?

He was in Paris. With Gambit and Jubilee and I.

[She hadn't seen him in about a week, but that was the last time.]

[ well. that already gives her one timeline marker. more about laura than about wolverine, but isn't that half the point? kate nods, and is quiet for a moment before: ]

Has M-Day happened? [ digging a little deeper into the timeline, perhaps. but it's a mutant-specific sorta thing. kate is quick to clarify: ] Sorry about the twenty questions. I just want to be certain of our respective pages before I say anything that might require us to be...sitting down.

[Her eyes narrowed at that, but after a moment she nodded.]

If you mean when many mutants lost their mutation, yes. That was...some time ago.

What about everything that went down with the Phoenix Force?

[ a little more recent, then -- ]

[She frowned.]

I...no. I don't know what you mean.

-- Probably for the best. It wasn't exactly pretty. [ and avengers versus x-men is an ugly phrase. kate doesn't quite know how to sell that one. ] Looks like we're considerably out of step. So's Wolverine, only I'm not quite sure how to go about pinning his point in time down. He's not exactly a forthcoming man.

[ or, rather, kate doesn't want to go so are you dead yet? ]

[So. She was...out of sync. With time? Things she didn't remember that had clearly happened. What did that mean? Her green eyes shifted away, studying one of the pieces of art in the lobby for a long moment.]

No, he isn't. [It was a trait she'd inherited from him.]

Is there something you need to know?

[ kate's eyes betray a kind of...sadness. it's not personal -- after all, she'd barely known logan even a little bit before sharing a ship with him in the fleet. clint had known him better, she supposes. but it's always worth a little empathy when someone's death haunts a conversation.

gently: ] You've already helped me learn it.

[That made her look back, frowning. Clearly she'd missed something in this conversation, which was frustrating since she wasn't even sure what. Someday she'd get better at them...hell, she knew she was better at them than she'd ever been before. But...still.]

I do not understand.

[ kate gestures at a bench. time to sit down, probably. ]

Promise not to snikt the messenger?

...I would not hurt you.

[She was a little insulted at the suggestion.]

-- Sorry. Figure of speech. [ kate grabs a seat first. ] I just mean to suggest it's probably going to be a bit of a big revelation. I'd never actually think you'd...

[ well, she probably never thought wolverine would either. but then he'd showed up, alive and too-old, at clint's apartment. ]

[Okay, not insulted, but maybe annoyed.]

[ out with it, katie-kate. ]

Last I heard, you were the one trading on the name Wolverine.

[ which is probably surprising, but not necessarily upsetting. it's the subtext beneath it all that she fears putting into words. ]

[That...was not what she was expecting at all. She was...but. That meant Logan was gone. But more so, it meant she'd taken up his mantle. Which was not even something she had ever really considered. As a child she had been meant to kill him. Now she thought of him as...well. As something.]

...Oh.

[Was all she actually managed to say, but her confused emotions were probably quite evident on her face.]

Please, [ kate urges her once more. ] Have a seat?
