So I had a little chat with your pal Fenris. He's a real charmer. This is just me hoping you can confirm that he's not the bloodthirsty maniac his recent stunt makes him look like; I'm a bit concerned about safety, you understand.

[ ugh, private broadcast... riku already knows he's not liking this. he looks tired, shoulders slumped as he sits in the armory. ]

Specifically current events involving your captain and my security officer, whose qualifications for the job are seriously in question at the moment.

At least you know he's a good assassin.

One assassin is more than enough for a ship, if you ask me. I don't like people elbowing in on my territory.

How much do you know about what happened? I was watching the network feed and stumbled upon a few clips from what looked like an accidental video stream, but all I really caught were the results, I didn't actually see what happened.

--Wait, he is? [He gives a low whistle.] I'm impressed; it looked pretty messy. Well, I guess that's one thing out of the way. I talked to the nutjob who attacked him. He gives me the heebie jeebies, but he assured me he's not just some bloodthirsty rampaging maniac.

Not sure I believe him.

He said Robin was keeping a slave, though. [He arches one eyebrow.] You know anything about that?

[ riku presses the heel of his hand against his eye. ]

I didn't. I didn't until he told me why someone killed him.

But I know this much: I looked in his heart, sensed everything. He's not a bad person--he's not evil. He said he was doing it because the person he was keeping couldn't take care of himself.

I don't think keeping a... [ riku's voice just falters, and his shoulders hunch. god, he hates that word. ] I don't think keeping him was right, but I've met him. I don't know if he could take care of himself with someone around.

You looked... into his heart. [Axel just stares into the feed a moment, ala Jim from the Office. Then,] Huh. You don't say.

I don't really think it's right either, but I don't think it's worth killing somebody over, especially if they can't really take care of themselves in the first place. I didn't think Robin was a particularly bad guy, for what it's worth, I'm just tryin' to get the facts straight.

Fenris, though, the guy that ki-- [Record scratch.] Wait. You said he wasn't dead. How can someone have killed him if he's not dead?

[limitstorm]

[ riku groans lightly. ]

He came back to life. Don't ask me.

I don't think he should've killed anyone, but I'm not so sure Robin should've kept him, either. This is a big mess.

Right. Came back to life. [He sort of scratches his head, then shrugs.] I guess whatever works. [Captain Zombie.]

This Fenris guy gives me the heebie jeebies, though. I talked to him--doesn't say much, listens even less, I think. He says he's got no quarrel with anybody else, but the truth is I don't like him on my ship. [He doesn't like him on any ship. He just plain doesn't really like him. But that is neither here nor there.] Do you know if they talked about anything else? Him and Robin, I mean. Before he went all Temple of Doom on him.

I don't know about that. Robin just told me that he was... that Fenris used to be in the same position.

I'm telling Sora to stay away from him. Isn't Roxas on the ship with him?

Yeah, Roxas is on my ship too, that's why I made sure to at least talk to this guy. If I'm gonna have to share space with him, I wanna know what I'm up against. I told him to keep his hands off Roxas. And you and Sora. Other than that, his hobbies aren't really my business. He told me he wouldn't attack anybody unless they gave him a good reason.

Trouble is I'm not sure what he constitutes as a "good" reason to attack somebody. He declined to give me a list.

Oh, boy.

[Varric looks like he hasn't slept, but he's still somehow impeccable. He reaches over and pops open a bottle of vodka before even getting through the rest of Axel's message. Instead, he pours himself a glass-- on the rocks-- and adds some soda, takes a drink, and then he responds.]

He's got anger problems and bias issues up the ass, but he's not a loose cannon. He's got good reasons for being the way he is. He's good.

The guy he attacked apparently owns a slave. And that slave is here. I don't exactly condone murdering people in the middle of the station, but, uh. It was personal.

I got his word that he won't be going after any demons unless they attack someone, so there's that.

I heard about the slave thing--it was news to me, for sure. I'm not convinced it's a good reason to kill somebody, but I appreciate the second opinion. He told me he wouldn't go after anybody who didn't attack first, too, so... at least he's consistent, I guess.

How long have you two known each other?

If it's any consolation, I never found a body. Either Atroma has a backup plan or there's something Robin isn't telling us.

Anyway, I've known him about ten years. Hawke helped him out when his former master was running him down. He's free, but I'm not sure he'll ever be free, you know? Shit like that-- it stays with you.

[He frowns a little.] Ehh, I get the feeling it's a little of both, to be honest. [He's not quite sure what Robin's deal is, but he isn't convinced that there's not more at work here, too.]

I see. Yeah, I would imagine you don't just get over something like that.

Do me a favor, though, would ya? Remind him that there are people in this fleet whose deaths would not be taken lightly. At all. He didn't seem too receptive when I tried to impress that upon him. Maybe he'll listen to you.

Maybe. We'll see what he says whenever he pops up again. The elf was sure he would.

[Varric pulls a face.]

I hate to say it, but he doesn't give a damn what anyone thinks. He lived in his master's old mansion in the rich part of town for years. Haunted it. It terrified everyone who got within thirty yards.

I'll talk to him about how killing people is bad, but here's the thing-- he doesn't kill people without a reason.

So don't give him a reason. That's my best advice. If you've got friends who might consider owning a slave or maybe summoning a demon to wreck the ship, smack them hard.

I try not to make a habit of giving people reasons to kill me. What concerns me is what he considers a good reason.

I don't think the people I'm interested in protecting are the sort to do either of those things, but if it comes up I'll make sure smacking happens. I appreciate the heads up.

[It's surprisingly sincere. He does appreciate it. He doesn't know Varric well, but he knows Fenris even less; second opinions are never a bad thing, and Varric's cooperation definitely earns him some points.]

He knows not to kill everything that moves. I would definitely be careful with magic, though.

[Varric gives Axel an easy grin.]

With magic? [Axel looks a little cheesed about that; he likes his magic.] What's he got against magic?

Yeah. Give him some warning before you use it, and definitely don't set him on fire.

[The grin fades.]

Mages got the short end of the stick on my world. They're connected to this thing called the Fade, where spirits and demons live. If a mage decides they like a demon's offer they can get possessed and go crazy. Some mages can use blood magic and-- well, control people. If they aren't draining their lives entirely. Pretty freaky stuff.

I won't go into the details, but there's a lot of blood mages where the broody elf is from.

It's a thing.

[He's... mostly kidding. Sort of. He kind of grimaces then.]

Oof, that's a bit harsh. Me, if I'm gonna manipulate somebody, I prefer to do it the old-fashioned way, no sense muddying it up with magic.

Yeah, that's how I feel. Just treat him with kid gloves. There's a small chance he'll warm up to you eventually, but I wouldn't count on it. He likes being the broody one.

It's fine; I don't really expect us to become buddies. If he wants to be the broody lone wolf that's his prerogative. I'd just like to avoid future bloody murder, especially within my little circle, that's all. I'll give him a wide berth.
