I know I come off as ditzy and silly and clumsy—I can be those things, sure, and it's part of my cover at home. But you don't even understand how important it is for me to do the right thing and be the person my mother intended for me to be. I would never betray her, or anyone else, by being careless and dangerous. I already feel worse than useless here, so being treated like a child, like you know my situation better than I do, it doesn't really help.

Believe me, I understand the need to live up to what someone believes you can be. It's hard.

But I've never once thought you would do something to purposefully endanger anyone. It's not that I think you won't use your power responsibly - it's just that I would prefer you maybe not use certain ones on this ship. Again, not because I don't trust you or think you're a child. But because accidents happen to the best of us, and one of the best ways to prevent those potentially catastrophic accidents is to simply not use the thing that could cause them.

I wouldn't be comfortable with anyone using laser beams of intense strength on this ship unless we had no other choice in an emergency, not just you. And when it comes down to it I have to think of the best ways to try and keep everyone on this ship safe.

That was why I asked you not to use your laser beams, though looking back I realize I expressed that poorly, and for that I apologize.

The thing is, it's almost worse you think I'd do something accidentally. I'm smart, Jim. Besides you, I've probably spent more time in space than anyone else on the ship. I'd been to 12 planets before I even got here. I want you to want to keep everyone safe—that's the hallmark of a great captain, which I think you are. But this is the sort of situation where you can express your concerns and then trust me to respect them and use my best judgement. Because I do respect you. Just less when you're trying to act like my dad rather than my equal.

I am sorry if I made you nervous at all, though. I've been in a weird place between being completely honest about my powers and not, so sometimes I have a hard time choosing when to be regular ol' Kara Danvers who is definitely not in any way Supergirl and Supergirl.

You're right, I should. At the time, I admit it didn't sound like you were taking that concern seriously, and so I became upset.

And it's not that I think you would Kara. It's just - they happen. Accidents happen and they are no one's fault, but as I'm sure you know they can have serious consequences, especially in space. I just want to do my due diligence in heading them off.

You can be completely honest with me, whenever you need to be, about anything. I value people who can do that, even when it's hard or especially when I don't want to hear it.

Who's Pike?

Christopher Pike. He was the former captain of my ship, and one of my superiors - he was promoted to Admiral when I took over the Enterprise.

_{[ There's a pause, the tiniest flicker of pain in his eyes, the kind that only comes when thinking of someone close and beloved. ]}

He's the one who got me to join up with Star Fleet. He died a year ago, during an attack on Star Fleet headquarters.

I'm sorry to hear about that, but it seems like he had a remarkable influence on your life. How did he get you to join?

He dared me. Specifically to be better than my father, and the sad little life I had carved for myself in Iowa at the time.

No, it is all farming mostly. I lived in a little place called Riverside, on my uncle's farm.

Pike came across me in the local bar after some of his cadets had moped the floor with me. I think I made a good impression even with the napkins stuffed up my nose.

My cousin grew up on a farm in Kansas.

And that's a great mental image. I'm sure you were very charismatic.

Nah, it's okay. It's a ridiculous story, it should be told truthfully. And it's a story that does Pike a lot of credit - shows the kind of man he is.

No, he read about him. Pike wrote a dissertation on the Kelvin - that is, my father's ship.

He was captain for about five minutes while he kept the ship on a collision course with Nero's ship so that everyone else could escape when the auto pilot malfunctioned.

I'm sorry to hear that. He probably saved a lot of people, but that doesn't always take the sting out of it.
