So here's how it goes: you tell me anywhere you'd rather be but here, with the caveat that it can't just be a home. I think it's safe to say that home is a very understandable answer, but it's also a little too achingly realistic for my purposes. So pick somewhere else. Pick Ibiza. Pick Iceland, if you want.

Well, unless Iceland is your home. Then please refer to rule numero uno. It also happens to be the game's only rule. [ short and sweet, that's our katerade.

[ kate's grateful -- and she smiles -- even though (in truth) she came here to be ever-so-slightly on the prowl. but what she might admit to kara, she wouldn't so readily admit to winn. how do one night stands even work in such a small, tight-knit fleet? how can she signal to other singles that she's ready to mingle?

but winn's a sweetie. and she'll accept his platonic dance offer with grace. ]

[ except her taste in partners is notoriously iffy so good luck with that. kate takes a loooong sip. ]

Full disclosure, I'm not an expert on the Kree.

I guess I did date a Kree warrior. [ ... ] And technically speaking, my team does have a guy who's half-Kree. But -- [ kate shrugs. ] To talk about the Kree, I probably have to also talk about the Skrulls.

[ he puts his drink down, leans his elbows on the table, and rest his chin on one hand; she has his undivided attention. ]

Yes talk about the Skrulls - [ he can't help himself, this is a subject that's near and dear to his heart. ]

They don't like each other. The Kree and Skrulls. Like, we're talking galactic warfare. Earth got caught up in it. Wasn't pretty. So the Kree got pretty damn good at fighting -- and at modifying their warriors to that end. Hence, Noh-Varr.

[ ... ] That's the ex. Noh-Varr.

So were the Kree trying to protect earth, is that how you met?

[ladybro]

Not -- ah, quite. Not quite. Earth was more like collateral damage to both races. Extra turf to fight over. Noh wasn't exactly one of the good guys when we first met but...things change. He broke apart from his Kree unit and worked with my team.

[winn]

[ her stories always sound like the epics he loves to read, watch, and play. it's so weird that for her - they're real life. ]

So you actually managed to beat back two invading alien armies? [ so much reverence in his voice and face. kate you're such a badass! and her team, yeah, but she's doing all of this with a bow and arrow and she's his friend so he's going to go ahead and fanboy her. ] Man - the Avengers are awesome - [ he can't really stay focused on which story he wants to hear because everything she says raises a hundred other questions and stories and he could just listen to her talk forever. ]

Are they both technologically superior? Do they have superpowers?

[ladybro]

Actually? The Kree-Skrull war was mostly...before my time. But I bet Clint would have some stories. He was on those front lines. [ -- but his admiration is still nice, all the same.

she shifts topics: ] The Skrulls can shape-shift. It leads to some interesting problems.

[ mental note to try and get him to tell him some! because alien battles. ]

Shape-shift as in turn into all kinds of huge monsters or as in disguise themselves as part of the team and infiltrate your ranks?

[ladybro]

The latter. [ she lets that sink in for a moment. ] For a while, there was a legitimate threat of skrulls having infiltrated all sorts of teams and organizations.

...damn.

[ that's the worst kind of shape shifitng, it brings their first conversation back to mind - his fear of his own evil twin. not being able to trust that the person next to you is who you think it is...that is a really easy way to go crazy. ]

How'd you deal with it? Or -- they -- how'd they deal with it?

[ladybro]

Pass-phrases. Questions that only the real person would know the answer to. [ she thinks about the rumours she's heard about clint and his ex-wife, and how she was one of the ones kidnapped and replaced by the skrull. ]

What if they were already switched when the pass-phrases were settled on though...

[ that would be his fear in a situation like this. he shakes his head, clearly it worked out for them - ]

So the Skrull can shapeshift, and the Kree are genetically modified -- to do what?

[ladybro]

They're not all modified. But they are all naturally stronger than humans. It just so happens that some are modified further, like Noh.

What do these modifications do?

[ bugs have a lot of useful skills but it all depends on the species and - how do you even isolate the desired skills from their dna strand? the concept is so much more advanced than anything he's ever known he's having a hard time wrapping his head around it. ]

Noh can crawl walls. [ she waits a moment -- perhaps expecting a spider-man joke? but when one doesn't come, she continues: ] And the nanobots allowed him to reroute pain in his body. [ DRINK. ] And hallucinogenic saliva.

[ -- yeaaaah. ]

...sorry I'm gonna need you to elaborate on that last one.

[ how do you date someone with hallucinogenic saliva? ]

[ just a look. ]

I think it's pretty self-explanatory, actually.

[ omg don't make her tell you about her ex-boyfriend's mind control spit. ]

Your ex-boyfriend's saliva. Makes people hallucinate?

[ well that sure puts 'banshee' in perspective.

he's going to take another sip of his drink and just try to let that sink in. ]

Could he like - spit really far or was it more of a. Close-range attack? [ did your ex go around making out with people on the battlefield? is that why you dumped him? because he totally gets that. ]

Look, don't knock it until you try it. [ some things can be all kinds of fun in the privacy of your own kree spaceship orbiting earth.
