Huntress crew, this is your first mate, Sorey. ...due to certain circumstances, we are currently without a Captain. I'm acting as Captain now to fill the role, but if there are any interested parties, please contact me at your soonest convenience.

In the meantime, if there's anything that requires tending to, please don't hesitate to let me know. Any supplies we're short on, any concerns you may have about the status of the ship...I know we're at full capacity now, so if we start taking on extra passengers again we'll have to double up. And I'm also the ship's engineer, so please bring any technical problems you have to me.

[Sorey can be found both in engineering on the Huntress and at the Interfaith center on the Iskaulit. If your character can sense spiritual power and has run into him before, they may notice him lacking his usual protective/cleansing domain.]

[She does feel like she ought to be doing more than just mooching his ship's food, but... well, he really looks like he could use a break. Whatever happened must have been terribly stressful.]

Um... well, okay! Can I help you make some food, at least?

Sure, of course. [gotta wash his hands real quick in water that smells weird and fake before he leads her out of Engineering and to the kitchens.] ...You don't have to look so stressed out. I'm sorry if I worried you.

No, no, not at all! I mean, yes, but... I'm just glad you're safe. You friend sounded really worried about you. And then there was that talk about a dragon on the planet, and- it's just been a little crazy around here!

[If her worrying is worrying him, though, she can at least try to look. less worried. The fighting's done and he's been found, and he doesn't seem injured, so the worst is over, surely.]

[...that's how most people look at it, isn't it? There was a dragon terrorizing the planet. Thank goodness it's gone.]

The dragon, um. [He just told her not to look so stressed out, too. Keep it together Sorey.] The dragon was my friend. ...my partner. He didn't know what he was doing, so please don't think too poorly of him.

[Oh dear, looks like she stepped in it now.]

A-ah... I'm sorry, I had no idea... are you--

[And she's just. Gonna cut herself off there, because he's pretty obviously not okay. And it feels like she shouldn't be asking for details, either. She's here to help, not to make him feel worse.]

...Anyway... I'm glad you're back.

Thanks. [He touches her shoulder, just a tap so she'll see the rueful smile he sends her way.] If I'm being completely honest it's hard to be grateful for that just yet, but I'll get there someday. [Maybe.]

Either way, I really do appreciate you checking up on me. This is even the first time we've met in person, huh? We should celebrate.

Ah... um, um...

[She scrambles for a moment, fidgeting, and then claps her hands to her face and straightens up, smiling brightly. If he needs some cheer, then she is damn well going to give him some! No moping allowed, no sir.]

Okay! Do you like mochi? Nothing makes me smile like decorated mochi.

Mochi? I've never had that before, is it good? [Yeah let's do this. The idea of talking about Mikleo any more has him shaky, his sinuses prickling in warning and he'd really rather not start crying on this poor girl who just came over here to check on him.]

[well that's downright horrifying. And thank god, because this is the perfect distraction, in her book.]

You've never had mochi!? I'm definitely making some, now! To the kitchen!!

Ahahaha, yes ma'am. [It's kind of nice to be following someone else's lead actually, and he falls into step behind her as easily as anything else.

If he still had the pact, would he be able to see into her heart? Well, he doesn't really need to. He's pretty sure he knows what he'd find.] What is mochi though?

[She's never been here before, so hopefully she can actually find the kitchen in a reasonable amount of time. She's certainly acting like she knows where she's going.]

They're cakes! Made of rice paste and stuffed with whatever you want. Usually something sweet, like red bean paste or custard. Some people like to use fruits or jams, too.

Ohhh, that does sound good. We have synthetic rice, though I don't think we have red beans or the ingredients for custard. We can probably make jam, though. [Or something like it.] Is mochi pretty popular?

Yeah, it doesn't taste right here, but it's still pretty good! All you need is sugar.

[oh hey conveniently she has found the kitchen, and now she's just sort of barging in and checking cupboards for stuff.]

It's a pretty popular sweet, yeah! You see them all the time in stores and bakeries. They just get fancier and more expensive during holidays.

Oh yeah, you said they get decorated and stuff. That sounds neat. Do they make them in different flavors for different festivals? [nevermind that this is his ship, he's just gonna park it nearby and watch her take command of the kitchen, chin in his hand.]

Yeah! New Years is usually vegetable filling, in spring they're coloured pink and are full of sweets, and most of the other holiday mochi vary by the colours linked to that holiday. When it's not a seasonal thing, I like to get the animal mochi. They're soooo cute!

[She's content to just ramble on as long as he'll listen, collecting ingredients and working on cooking up a good batch of the synthetic rice stuff.]

[Rose would be over the moon, listening to this and devising all the ways she could market it back home.] Are they hard to make? I can help you out...though I'm not that good at making sweets. [He's Terrible, give him something simple.]

They're not too hard, nope! You look pretty strong, so once the rice stuff is cooked I'll get you to mash it. We need to make a paste first, and then we can add the filling. Can you point me to where you keep your fruit flavours? Oh, and which do you like best?

Ah, iiiit's... [Sorey jumps up and leans over, reaching past her to slide back the cover on the dispenser.] Here's the flavors, they've got little pictures. I like orange and strawberry both, I'm not picky. It's this weird gelatin stuff though, I don't know if that'll work?

Gelatin can work! Some mochi have kind of a jelly filling, though that's usually the cheap kind... but we're in space, so we gotta make do with what we have!

[She's used to the cheap stuff anyway, even mochi is a luxury when you're dirt broke.]

Sounds good to me. [Sorey smiles a little at her enthusiasm and rubs his chin.] So what can we mash the rice in? You said it takes a lot of strength, right?

Well, maybe just endurance. I don't know how hard it is with this stuff, I haven't tried before. But it's gotta be real thorough!

[She finds a flat-bottomed bowl and fills it with the synthetic rice from the machine, peering doubtfully at the contents for a moment before passing it to Sorey. Next, she tracks down a utensil with a big enough handle base to work for the task at hand and demonstrates how to make the paste from the rice.]

This is how you do it. You make this weird-looking white mush, and it doesn't look like much right now, but once they're done you'll be amazed, promise!

Oh wow. [Yeah that looks gross and tedious, he can see why a lot of places will make them now. It's always easier to sell something that's a pain in the butt to produce.] Okay, well! [He pointedly rolls up his sleeves!!! and gets started on mashing that rice into muck. Mmmm.]

So what animals should we make these? Which ones normally get done?

[You wait, Sorey. Yooooouuuuu wait.]

Hmm... bunnies and kittens are popular, and pretty easy to do, I think! We can start there.

[Since Sorey's taking care of the rice, she goes about getting together the filling, tossing a handful of ingredients and flavouring into a pair of bowls.]

Unless there's one you'd rather do? I'm no pro or anything, but we can give it a shot.

Goats. Can we do goats? [mash mash mash. this is kind of soothing actually....]

I've never done goats before! Let's try it.

[She'll have to ponder how to do the horns. In the meantime, this mixture needs more sugar. Ingredients are limited in space, but desperate times call for desperate comfort food.]

Do you like goats? We don't get them much in the city.
