We passed one that had to be at least the size of a house. [A small one, yes, but still large as far as ferns go. Having excavated the roots, Erik sets the plant aside into one of the bags they brought with them.]

I suppose that could have taken hundreds of years to grow, though.

I think we passed a couple that were that big, dear. [she'd never seen ferns that large, nor knew if that were even possible - then again, she had to remind herself that this was space, and it was freakin' weird sometimes]

Either that or the energy in this place makes it grow that way. [she purses her lip, before turning back to the plant she was carefully digging up]

[He can't be expected to notice every plant.]

Without any species here that changes the landscape for settlements, it's all undisturbed.

It's odd, isn't it? That there are no settlements or villages.

[she pauses again to look out through the trees, before turning her attention to Erik] At least, no obvious ones.

[Beginning work on another plant, a flower this time, Erik keeps his attention on the digging.]

There are traces of metal around, in the earth. Small things. I can't really tell what they are, though they don't feel like natural deposits.

[she finally frees the plant from the dirt, carefully brushing off some dirt before setting it in its bag]

Is that normal? For there to be metal bits in the earth like that.

It would be around places with civilisation... just in terms of scrap metal.

[she can't help but make a face]

I do not like this place. It has more questions than answers.

[exothermia]

[Erik sits back on his heels, flower forgotten for the moment.]

I would have thought this kind of planet would be better for you.

It is, but . . . the moment I stepped on this planet, my magic replenished quickly enough that I could actually feel it. That is not normal for me.

[she bites her lip] I know it is an odd thing to be bothered by.

[exothermia]

[Erik frowns, taking in that information. He's felt nothing like that, but of course he's not a magical person. There's no reason to doubt what Tempest claims.]

No, it's not. Anything abnormal is enough to be a concern. There was a strange burst of electromagnetic energy that passed through the ship as we approached this place. But it didn't behave the way it should have. [If it had, all the ship's equipment would have been knocked offline.]

[she frowns as well. She doesn't know what that is, but - Erik wouldn't mention it if it wasn't important]

What would it do if it behaved normally?

A pulse like that would have turned off all the electronics on board the ships. It still felt like one... just with none of the actual effects.

How strange . . . [the technology is still beyond her, even with the help of the augment, but she knows that's a very, very bad thing.

She huffs a little bit] There is something else, but I don't know if it is me or actually something worth worrying about.

What is it?

[He returns to digging up the last of the flower, putting it in with the rest.]

It feels like we are being watched.

[she frowns, then faintly shakes her head, picking up the trowel she was using and turning to another plant] That is the best way I can put it. And it is not in the same way we are watched by the audience.

[exothermia]

[It's automatic, the way the idea of being watched makes him tense. It's subtle enough that it may not be noticeable, but for the way he pauses before replying. Of course they're always being watched in some way... the idea that something else is doing so, on top of that, isn't a pleasant one.]

The animals? [It's a suggestion only. He had seen some of the strange fauna on their way to this spot.]

[she glances over at the pause. She doesn't want to make an issue of something like this until she figures out who else feels it, but . . .

She shakes her head and is quiet for a moment, trying to work out a better way to say it] No, not like that. It does not feel that way to you?

[He has to think about this. After a moment, he shakes his head.]

No. Not really.

[that's what she expected, but she still wrinkles her nose]

Perhaps I've finally lost it, then.

[exothermia]

[He reaches over and nudges her shoulder with a fist.]

I doubt it. You and I have very different senses.

[she blinks at the contact, then quirks a smile]

I know. [she tilts her head] It was mostly meant as a joke, but - I may hunt down an elf and ask them if they feel it, too. They are more attuned to this than I am.

Certainly more than me. [Magic is as far from his expertise as it can get. He cinches the bag shut after dropping the trowel into it.]

There are elves here?

I spoke to one over the network. [she waves a hand] I think there are others, but I haven't bothered to speak to them.

[which is a surprise to absolutely no one]

[He nods, accepting that. Who Tempest chooses to speak to is her own business, and he knows that being half-elven has lead to wariness on her part.]
