It's... It's, sort of, um....

[oh, god, why this.]

Okay, let's start with this. Do you know what a Spellblade technique is?
wolfehawke: (Actually you're wrong)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-10-25 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Is that the thing Knight-Enchanters can do, where they summon a spirit blade, or do you mean giving elemental properties to weapons with magic?
experiencepoints: (pic#7746686)

[personal profile] experiencepoints 2016-10-25 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
The second one.

My grandfather was, as far as I know, the only Spellblade in the world. He gave his attacks the properties of some spells, He was a physical fighter who had none of the weaknesses of that way of fighting- Her power and versatility were unparalleled, and combined with my grandmother, they were probably some of the strongest in the world.

But there's a lot of reasons why Spellblade techniques shouldn't work. The metal's conductivity of mana, bypassing physical resistances, everything. So, I've been trying to recreate his techniques with my weapons, using something I encountered back in those 'calibrations' as a base. I've never gotten it to work until I was a hair away from dying.

Thanks to that moment of inspiration, I can do it, but... I'm still working out the 'how'.
wolfehawke: (half smile)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-10-25 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
That seems more dramatic than what my boyfriend knows how to do. He can give weapons an edge so the wounds they inflict will burn or freeze or various other elemental properties, but I've never seen anything that looks like that. It seems like a sustained fire spell that you can swing the weapon with and deal both sorts of damage, is that right?

Me, I'm only ever able to funnel my mana through my weapon to strengthen and direct a spell.

[personal profile] experiencepoints 2016-10-25 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
No, no, it's a little more, um...

... It might be easier to show you than to tell. We need to find a target to fight. Can you stop one of the animals around here without killing it?
wolfehawke: (total innocence)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-10-25 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Uh... I could freeze something, if we see anything.

[He means that quite literally. He has a bunch of things he knows, but his main innate element is ice and he specialized in Force magic.]

Can you not cast it on the seed pod or something?
experiencepoints: (pic#7738520)

[personal profile] experiencepoints 2016-10-25 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
That'll work.

... The... seed pod? Of course not. That would be bizarre.
wolfehawke: (That's the stuff)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-10-25 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
So your magic always has to be cast at a living being or am I missing something here?
experiencepoints: (pic#7734247)

[personal profile] experiencepoints 2016-10-25 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
No, not necessarily living. It's...

[She rubs her head, trying to think of how to explain it.]

... To vastly oversimplify, it has to be something I can recognize as either an ally or an enemy, and a discrete unit in its own right. The seed pod is just an item, and part of something else besides.

Aside from spells like Quake, but Quake is a stupid spell and I'm not going to be using it.
wolfehawke: (no likey)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-10-25 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh alright, I think I understand.

[Sort of. He still doesn't see why she can't just send off a fireball at whatever rock or plant happens to be around, but if she needs to be that technical than he's not going to question how her abilities work.

He looks around, trying to find some kind of animal. There don't seem to really be the regular allotment of squirrels, chipmunks, and general forest critters bustling about but he does manage to spot a bird on a branch a few yards away and sends a quick burst of ice at it, freezing it solid to its branch.

From here it looks a decent size, but once he wanders a bit closer, he finds he'd vastly underestimated. It's near four feet long with sharp talons and the razor beak of a corvid. Maker's breath, he's glad it hadn't just swooped at them all on its own.]
experiencepoints: (Nineties boybands are still hip.)

[personal profile] experiencepoints 2016-10-25 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Perfect.

[She walks forward, pleased, not even caring about the size of it. She doesn't seem to think it's unusual in the slightest, honestly.

She swings his staff at it, connecting with a satisfying 'thunk'. Except that thunk is drowned out, because the instant contact is made, that frozen bird is suddenly the center of a thirty-foot-tall column of exploding fire blasting out of the ground. (The stream of fire and the bursting explosions from it, of course, resemble almost identically the fire coiling around the staff.)

Of course, when it fades, that bird is very dead, but the fire doesn't appear to have touched anything else. The ground, the trees, nothing else is so much as even a slight bit warmer after that display.]
wolfehawke: (WOAH)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-10-25 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Wolfe staggers back when she makes contact, the column of fire rising up and entirely incinerating the bird, leaving nothing behind in its wake but the vague smell of roast hen. He stares for a long moment, dumbfounded.]

Maker's sacred arsecheeks...

[It's not the size of the flame cast that confounds him, nor that she had to touch the thing with the staff to make it set off - that seems damned inconvenient for a battlefield, honestly - but the fact that nothing else was touched has him completely floored. If he's not careful, he leaves collateral damage in his wake that could level a small town, but this? This was magic that could have lit a city block on fire and yet it only hit the one target.]

... Is that a good or a bad profanity? I don't think I heard that one from Daisy.

[she actually seems a bit nervous, now. did this guy want to keep it to eat it? should she have held back to fire 1 or 2? she didn't do anything wrong, did she. help her.]
wolfehawke: (Well I'll Be)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-10-25 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
[He sort of ignores her question. Sorry Nightingale.]

You killed it without touching anything else.

[Wolfe lets out a low whistle, impressed.]

That is some serious control you have.
experiencepoints: (I'll take mine gilded. 25 karats.)

[personal profile] experiencepoints 2016-10-25 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
[She shakes her head, embarrassed by the praise.]

Oh, that? No, it's nothing special. It's how all magic in my world works. Wouldn't it be harder to hit something that you didn't target?
wolfehawke: (total innocence)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-10-27 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Not with my magic. Ice is easier, but fire? Lightning? Even with Force I'm likely to send a whole group flying along with anything not tied down around them unless I really concentrate and use a staff. Otherwise there's quite a lot of collateral damage.
experiencepoints: (pic#7734247)

[personal profile] experiencepoints 2016-10-27 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
No, my only spell like that is Quake, and... Again, that is the stupidest spell. I don't think I've ever used it once. I can set my spells to hit multiple enemies, but it does make them a lot weaker.
wolfehawke: (What's this now?)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-10-29 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's still amazing how that doesn't hit the tree. Fire by its nature wants to consume everything, but yours only touches what you want it to. With that kind of control, I think mages from my world might be less frightening to non-mages.

[Maybe. At least a little.]
experiencepoints: (pic#7734247)

[personal profile] experiencepoints 2016-10-29 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Why are people afraid of mages where you come from, anyway?

[she has no idea what she's getting into.]
wolfehawke: (Pouty)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-10-29 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, first of all not everyone can command fire and lightning from the time they're twelve years old, so that makes non-mages a bit wary. Second, the predominant religion paints magic is a tool of subservience. "Magic was meant to serve man, not to rule over him," which most take to mean that mages should be locked away and used as tools instead of treated like any sort of people.
experiencepoints: (pic#7281311)

[personal profile] experiencepoints 2016-11-02 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
... Twelve? I'm pretty sure I was like eight at most when I learned my first spell.

[She sighs.]

That sort of shit is why my world killed all our gods. Religions like that never end well.
wolfehawke: (who me?)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-11-07 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it varies. The average seems to be around eleven or twelve but I've heard as young as six....

[He trails off, her second statement catching up with him.]

You killed your gods?
experiencepoints: (pic#7745541)

[personal profile] experiencepoints 2016-11-08 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, yeah?

[Pause.]

Wait, no. Not like, me personally. I'm nowhere near that strong. The last one, Tyrfing the Warbringer, was killed like five hundred years ago.
