So am I. We had fires and ovens, but nothing with knobs and buttons.

[Toyed with the plate, looking with distaste at the paste.]

Or anything like this. Is it always this soft?

The sort where you had to start the fire yourself, yes? Those are what my world has.

[she glances down at the plate and wrinkles her nose in distaste as well]

Unfortunately. It is something of an acquired taste.

If only I had that ability as well, I might not feel so pampered. We had servants and cooks to manage the kitchens.

Now I have to learn to make something for myself.

[She pushed the plate away.]

I suppose paste is better than something more difficult?

My, am I in the presence of a proper lady, then?

[she says it in a teasing tone. The proper sorts were always interesting, especially since in her own world, she tended to keep her distance from them] I could teach you, it is not as hard as one may think.

[she hums] Or nothing at all. When we stop at the different planets, I have been trying to find real fruit and vegetables, at least. Though the paste is not so bad once you get used to it - just soft and odd, like it is not supposed to be that way.

My septa certainly worked hard to make me so.

[She answers the teasing with a small laugh. It had been some time since she actually felt proper and ladylike. She was lesser nobility and a rebel queen, it was difficult to hold herself to the same standards that she used to.]

I should be grateful.

It tastes strange. Are real fruits and vegetables so hard to find at the different planets?

I think your septa would be pleased to know that you are going to learn how to do things your servants would normally do, then. A proper lady should be able to care for herself, yes?

[Tempest knows that isn't how it works, but hey, she may as well put it out there as an offer to teach what little she can]

You can be grateful when if I manage to teach it properly enough.

On this planet, a friend brought back some things for me, but I've managed to find a few on the waystation as well. It differs from planet to planet.

At the very least, I make sure we have plenty of decent tea.

It will be an adjustment, but I do want to learn. I don't have the luxury of turning that down here.

[It wouldn't do any good to protest or balk at the idea. She might as well make the best of things.]

Even if you don't teach it properly, I won't really know the difference.

That is something I at least know how to make. My tea doesn't taste terrible.
noprophecies: (015)

[personal profile] noprophecies 2016-11-23 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you could turn it down, but it is a lot easier when one knows how to do some things on their own. Though I will do my best to teach you.

[even if it isn't proper, it'll be entertaining. Mostly for Jeyne, because of Tempest's patience is notoriously thin]

Decent tea is a necessity, yes? I don't know how these lot drink that slop from the machine, it's horrid.
goodandtrue: ([Jeyne] Smiles (Teasing))

[personal profile] goodandtrue 2016-11-25 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps, but that seems a bit unfair. We are all stuck in this position and so many are working hard to keep these ships from falling apart. The least I can do is learn to cook for myself.

[Tempest was at least nice to offer, even if she was likely to become impatient with Jeyne's lack of understanding.]

You mean that fizzy drink? It tasted strange.
noprophecies: (019)

[personal profile] noprophecies 2016-11-26 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
That is certainly true. Though cooking anything fancier than vegetables may require you seek out someone who knows what they are doing.

[because she can turn on the oven, she can cook the things she eats, but past that? Yeah, no]

Yes, that. And there is a green tea, but it does not taste much like the real thing.

I suppose I will have to wait until the day comes that I feel brave enough to experiment with my food. I think for now, I only trust myself to heat the meals.

[She knows her limitations and would rather have someone glued that can tell her if she is doing something that could make her sick.]

Better than stale beer and sour wine. There are some things that I am glad are not in this place.
noprophecies: (032)

[personal profile] noprophecies 2016-11-28 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand that sentiment. It is a little daunting.

[she can't help the face she makes at the thought of sour and stale alcohol. She does her fair share of drinking and that it would even exist makes her angry. Watered down is one thing]

Yes, for that I am thankful as well. The bars, at least, carry plenty of alcohol that is decent enough.
goodandtrue: ([Jeyne] Smiles (Fond))

[personal profile] goodandtrue 2016-11-28 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
There are pubs here?

[She can imagine a few instances when having a drink would have eased her mind since arriving.]

So they aren't in the forms of gel? That is one small mercy.
noprophecies: (070)

[personal profile] noprophecies 2016-11-29 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Goodness, no. Nor is it watered down rubbish, either. And -

[she steps past Jeyne and reaches for one of the lower cupboards, opening it and reaching in to pull out a bottle of something "strong". She has no idea what it's called, just that it'll do what she wants it to]

In the event that one cannot get to the bars, I have this.
goodandtrue: ([Jeyne] Smiles (Earnest))

[personal profile] goodandtrue 2016-12-01 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
[She feels like she has stumbled into a naughty secret, one that would normally gain disapproval and censure. Yet she is amused and feeling a bit giddy, enough to be (what she considers) daring.]

Should we open it together? Have a bit as we attempt to cook?
noprophecies: (005)

[personal profile] noprophecies 2016-12-03 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
My, what a wonderful idea. I like the way you think.

[she's a terrible influence and she can't bring herself to care. Cooking while drinking spells disaster and yet]
goodandtrue: ([Jeyne] Amused)

[personal profile] goodandtrue 2016-12-05 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I imagine this will at least make the paste taste rather good.

[It was better than nothing.

She grabbed two glasses for them, offering them out to her.]
noprophecies: (027)

[personal profile] noprophecies 2016-12-06 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
One can hope.

[she cracks open the bottle with practiced ease, and pours each of them a glass]
