At the risk for earning a reputation as a party planner, I have a thing for everyone to attend again. Don't worry, lots of other people are helping pull it together. It's going to be on New Year's Eve, but the real event is the countdown to Winn's birthday which is also on the first. It's going to be in a club we rented out for this in the red shift district. Starts around seven-ish. Ends when you pass out?

It's kind of a surprise maybe? At least the part where it's for his birthday. And if you don't know Winn but you still want to come that's fine too. You can trade a gift for Winn for a free drink at the bar. Otherwise, bring some money. Cake's on us though.

[Birthday/New Year's Party]
[The space is well decorated and so glittered you can probably tell Wrath was part of the team putting this together. Lots of Winn's friends came out to help whether it was getting decorations up, managing food, music, or chipping in to buy out the space and a drink for anyone bringing a gift. Not to mention drinks for the birthday boy all night.

There's a table for presents and another one with a spread of openly available food though the bar has appetizers you can buy too. There's a big cake at one end because of course there is and some punch that didn't start the night spiked at least. There's space for dancing and a karaoke machine set up on a small raised platform for those who want to try their hand at entertainment.

The night really kicks off when Winn walks in and instead of a balloon drop there's a fluffy blue stuffed bear drop. Feel free to take one of those home. There are a lot.

When midnight comes closer some people will file out to one of the observation areas to get a good view of the nebula for the big countdown. Bring your own person to kiss!

[ dipping is absolutely universal. kate does her part -- not daring to go slack in his arms and prove herself a shoddy dancer. after all, she's got a handful of years spent learning ballet with one of the best instructors manhattan's power-parents could afford. ]

We should absolutely get pancakes sometime -- [ if it sounds like a come-on she either doesn't care or doesn't assume. ] Not least of all because it's been way too long since I've had pancakes. Protein gel in the morning is just a sad, sad, sad state of affairs.

And back up and twirling around with her mostly along with the music but a little just for fun. Tonight has been the most legitimately fun night he's had since ending up here even if he's been entertaining himself to the best of his ability.]

[ so they dance. kate was never shy to begin with but each measure of music invites a fresh familiarity. she shares her personal space; she infringes a bit on his. locking her fingers loosely against the back of his neck. it's all friendly. ]

So you know about pancakes. But not bagels. [ how funny. how kinda endearing, too. ] I wonder what else you're missing out on.

[Friendly is good. Heck, friendly is great! If his arms curl a little tighter around her waist then that's pretty friendly too, right?]

I'm a complicated guy. [Who just hadn't been on earth that long yet and a lot of his life wasn't very earth-typical with the DEO and alien bar.] You should quiz me on Thanksgiving.

[ladybro]

[ totally friendly. and as long as they're both on the same friendly page, she doesn't fuss so much about making room for the holy ghost between them. ]

Quiz you? [ kate's head tilts. her laughter crinkles her nose. ] I mean -- I don't know about you, but I don't usually talk turkeys while I'm two-stepping. But I confess, you've got me curious.

Well, if you have dance conversation rules about it I would not want you to break those on my account. [Smiling.]

[ladybro]

Oh, I'm not all that bothered by flexing the rules. [ and she speaks with sincerity -- not some sorta coquettish pageantry. ] Luckily, though, no such rules exist. What's your hangup with Thanksgiving, dude?

[spacebro]

[He laughs.] It's just an earth tradition I was there for. One of the things I have the hang of. You wouldn't think it would matter back in space, but most of you are still from earth.

[ladybro]

[ yep, sometimes -- like just now -- talking with him is like an echo of noh-varr. it both frustrates and fascinates her. ]

We're floating through the stars, but we're still clinging to what we know. It's gotta be annoying to still be confronted with it all. [ ... ] Or thrilling. I think I kinda envy your ability to experience stuff for the first time.

You make me sound a little like a child. I'm sure you're experiencing things for the first time too. We're both dancing with each other for the first time.

[ladybro]

[ oh! charming. it catches her unawares, and it shows in her grin. ]

Believe-you-me, I definitely don't think you're anything like a child. [ she hems and haws and clarifies: ] But I've...danced with non-earthlings before. Seeing all these things that are old hat to me through fresh eyes? [ whether those eyes are his or another alien's? ] It's neat.

You're full of surprises, Kate from New York who likes bagels and pancakes and dancing. [Which is easy enough to tell but limited knowledge!] Who are these other non-earthlings?

If you want me to go through the whole list of aliens I've ever known, we might be here for a while. [ what! it's the truth. but as for the ones she's danced with? ] But there's one in particular. A kree soldier who was also pretty pro-pancake.

Kree? [He considers it from a moment.] I don't know it, but he sounds like he has good taste. Is he here?

[ladybro]

Futz, no. [ thank goodness. ] Just as well. I'd rather the Atroma didn't start farming my exes.

[spacebro]

What is an exes? [Sometimes it's like terms for relationships on Daxam shared no common words with English.]

[ladybro]

Oh, jeez, uhm -- [ her steps slow. nothing about the question stumps her, really. she merely didn't expect to have to answer it.

after a pause: ] Like ex-boyfriends. Ex-lovers. Ex-somethings. People you used to be with but you're not anymore. Exes.

I understand. [He also understands he made it weird. Time for a spin? Time for a spin!] So what do you do that you're meeting non-earthlings?

[ladybro]

I'm an Avenger. [ mostly! hey, everyone lies a little on their resume. and it's not like there's anyone here but clint to expose her exaggeration. even then, she's fairly certain he'd have her back. after all...captain america did ask. ] And Avengers sometimes gotta take jaunts on spaceships.

[ or at the very least wake up in them, orbiting the earth, after going home with noh-varr.

and the spin? the spin totally helps. it's hard not to stay cheery when spinning. ]

[She manages to be her first anyway. She sets the standard of what an Avenger is. Well, not really. He did talk to Natasha a couple of times, but sit down, this is going to be shocking—she didn't talk about herself much, Avengerhood included.]

Is Avenger something I should already know too?

Probably not. They don't exist on the Earth from your world -- [ oh, confident now. but she remembers how he asked about winn. ] But where I come from? They're heroes. Protectors. Earth's Mightiest.

[ from the most cosmic of powers all the way down to the best of shots. ]

[ -- she finds the groove again, and anchors her dancing by the hands she's linked behind his neck. ]

Nope. No powers. [ and not nearly enough training. ] You don't always need powers to be a good dude.

Doesn't it help if the bad dudes [yep, just using your word] have powers?

[ladybro]

That's why it's nice to have a team. [ ... ] A team of good dudes can do a lot if they work together. Some with powers and some without.
