[The fleet, more or less patched up after their battle, has once again left civilization behind for empty space. Maybe it's a good time to distract yourself and get away from the endless repairs and nothingness, though there might still be cleaning up that needs to be done here too.

Well, Peggy's hardly the next person.

[ especially when it comes to tea. ]

[ he smiles and pats his shoulder. ]

That's great. That's not too far away. Was it - a first date?

[ actually it was more making out in a supply closet, but he's pretty sure kitty wouldn't want him to tell captain america that. he clears his throat. well, there was also a first date? it just came after... ]

Really I think we kinda started the first time we met. [ she almost kissed him, she would've if his cardigan hadn't reminded her of her ex. ]

It did?

[ he looks momentarily surprised before his smile softens. ]

That's gotta be special.

[ most people say love at first sight is a bluff, it's nice to see further proof that it isn't. ]

It is. [ he nods, it's the most special and precious thing to him. he's always thought of meeting kara as the best thing to ever happen to him, but now...it's completely different and incomparable, but both moments are equally important. ]

We just...we fit, you know?

Believe me.

[ he pats his shoulder again. ]

I know. It's funny, after so many years in the wrong century, I almost forgot what it felt like.

I don't think I ever really knew what it felt like til I got here.

[ he never really fit in back home. it's not even just about kitty - cisco, hank, kate, jim, margaery, opal, hermione, raven, fenris, steve, ravi, all of his friends...he has a long list of friends. back home it was kara, and james and alex sort of. he didn't really feel like he belonged, not the way people here make him feel. ]

You know, I'm happy for you two. I feel like all of us making good out of all of this is the way we fight against the Atroma every single day. Bringing us here is one thing but it seems like people are really good at living their lives despiteo of the circumstances.

[ and never for the sake of the show. ]

Think people will do things for Valentine's?

[ it's been on his mind for the last few days. ]

People are amazingly adaptable and resilient. We don't break that easy.

[ he nods at that question. ]

I am. [ of course he is, it's his first valentine with his girlfriend. ] You need a hand setting anything up?

Gonna have to think of something good.

[ he might be slightly concerned. ok, he's more than slightly concerned. ]

I have a feeling tradition won't do. I'm ruling out sweets and flowers.

[ and if he's honest - ]

I should think of something personal.

Try to see if anyone's got ingredients and a recipe for key lime pie?

[ look she sounded pretty passionate about it, ok. ]

[ a frown as he considers the subject. ]

I'd like to get her something she can keep. I got a few tea cups and repainted them for Christmas, she seemed to like that.

[ this is so difficult. ]

[ he nods ]

Something that Kitty and I did was exchange lockets, so wherever we end up in the multiverse - [ he pulls out the little box locket that hangs around his neck always from under his shirt, and opens it to reveal kitty's picture ] we'll have each other.

[ there are other kidnappy worlds out there. ending up in another one completely separated from everyone they love is a depressing thought - but unfortunately it's also a realistic one. ]

Just, give her something from the heart, that's what'll make it special.

That's beautiful.

[ he smiles at the locket. it reminds him of his compass, only without the tinge of pain that usually comes with it. ]

What's your plan for Valentine's?

[ he smiles and closes it, tucking it back in. steve's the first person he's showed this to. ]

The specifics depend on where we'll be - if the planet's nice, then I'll take her somewhere there, but if it isn't, I'll deck the hell out of the lecture hall, make it into a dance floor - Kitty loves to dance.

[ he lifts two of his. Just ask for it. ]

It sounds like a very solid plan.

It'll be solid when I know where we are.

[ and that nothing life shuttering didn't happen on the day. but he's not jinxing it! ]

Our next stop might give us some ideas. They tend to be celebration-appropriate.

[ halloween planet was creepy, christmas had the frozen planet... ]

I hope they won't be too much of that.

[ he can only imagine how that one might go. If Peggy thought Christmas has the potential to be gaudy. This entire Valentine's Day matter will have to be subtle. ]

Haven't heard from the Atroma in a while and honestly, I hope it'd stay that way.

We may not have heard words, but they're always present.

[ the planets, the comas, the appearances and disappearances, the attack...he hears the atroma loud and clear through them. ]

Sometimes I don't know what to think about them. I used to think they're cowards.

[ powerful beings that hide in the shadows, who won't show their faces or say anything remotely close to the truth. ]

Now, I think they might be weaker than they'd like us to know.

Maybe it's both, maybe it's neither.

[ his frustration is strong, and easy to spot. ]

I've been here for close to a year and we've yet to learn anything substantial about them. We don't know how many of them there are, if they're human, if they have powers, tech, or both, if they're on the marsiva, if there even is a marsiva or all of this is a virtual reality...

Slow down -

[ he smiles, places a hand on his arm. he lost him at tech powers and virtual reality bit. he knows frustration when he sees it, mainly since Winn seems to behave much like him when he's anxious. ]

We'll figure it out. I'm sure that in time between all of us, we can do it. Some of the smartest people I know live around here.

[ he gives him a look, you're one of them is implied but not said. ]

We'll get to the bottom of it.

But their minds are messed with. [ he doesn't feel like one of the smartest people in any group right now. ]

Maybe we're looking at this the wrong way. If our brains are capped and powers can be controlled, maybe what we need is a low tech solution - figure out what's so basic that they can't temper with, and go from there.

I don't feel any difference but maybe I'm less of a threat.

[ steve is a soldier. these technical matters and the powers of the atroma are beyond him. peaceful as he's been here, he's not surprised if the atroma do not suspect him too heavily. he'll never admit to the conflict. the atroma are vicious and this game of them have to be put to an end, so much is clear.

what's less clear is how much he has to lose if they return him home after they've been defeated. ]

But I gotta say, if this is what your like with a - capped mind, I wouldn't wanna mess with you at your home.
