I must say the good folk of this stop are very kind - they have allowed my brother and I use of the mines and forges here in exchange for some trading. My brother and I are going to be working on some proper swords - if anyone else is inclined to a bladed weapon, we are happy to make you one as well.

Grandfather, Fingon, you needn't ask, but your help in the forges would be invaluable - Maedhros and I manage, of course, but neither of us are... what we were. And we have neither Father, nor Curvo, nor Tylepe here to point out everything we are doing wrong!

I was forged in Japan. Some of my blades went as far as America, but I don't really remember that very well.

Can you tell me of your world?

[He shrugs and scratches the back of his head, looking away.]

...Can't really tell you a lot.

I was forged back about six hundred years ago, was used in a bunch of wars and battles against foreign shores and people in my own country. But then the wars ended and I got stuck in sheds and warehouses, or melted for scrap.

[He grimaces at those memories. They're unpleasant, but it's the truth.]

Recently I got brought back in this body to fight a war again, but I don't see a lot of the outside world still. Too busy fightin' or stayin' at the Citadel.

What about you? The Valin..place or the other one, Middle-Earth?

I suppose that would be a problem, if you had no physical body, then. [ Maglor agrees ]

I am sorry to hear you were so ill treated! A good blade ought to be properly cared for. But perhaps now you will have your chance to see the world around you, even though this is not your own.

[ He pauses, and there is something painfully wistful ]

Valinor was beautiful. I suppose you could even call it paradise, of a sort. But I love Middle-earth very much, although many of my memories there are coloured in pain. But it is beautiful, and in some places, still very wild. There is much to see there, and all her peoples contribute something to her nature.

Yeah, the body thing's only, uh...about a year or two old.

[But he shrugs off the apology. It's just the thing that happens to swords that aren't considered valuable or important. He had no cultural importance, no aesthetic value, not even any real historical ties. He needs a war to be useful, to be necessary and needed. Otherwise, it's just forge fires and rust.]

But what d'you mean "was" beautiful. Is that Valinor place no longer around?

And it is well - that hurt is an old one, and the scar one I am well used to. And I hope not! I have family still there, and those returning. That the home of my youth remains as joyful and glorious as I remember - that is my hope.

[He never gets it when people are super attached to things. But sure, okay. He nods and looks puzzled, but decides that as long as Maglor isn't depressed because he brought up a sore subject, things must be fine.]

So how old're you? A thousand?

Mm, the dates are hard to calculate exactly, but... I am roughly around nine thousand six hundred years of the sun, I believe.

[Holy shit, dude, you're old. And that comes from a thing that can't technically die.]

I don't think there's a spirit alive that can match that. What are you? Some kinda god?

[ Maglor laughs, a bright peal of sound ]

I suppose I rather am, aren't I? And no, no, nothing so grand! My people name ourselves Quendi the speakers, and Eldar, the people of the stars. But Men have always called us elves. We are bound to our world, you see, and so we die not of age as others do, for we will exist so long as the world does.

Well shit, so you're like...nature spirits?

[Thank the gods, he understood something in all that - star people, speaker, Quendi...stuff. He tried. He's a simple sword and really only cares about war. He tried!!!]

That's pretty interestin'. I've met a couple other spirits here, but up until now I haven't met any kind of...immortal one.

I suppose some think of us that way - but we are physical beings of flesh and blood - just... we don't age the same way as humans do.

But we can be slain - by blade or poison or grief! - just as any can.

...Grief?

You can get so sad that you just die?

[That's a new one. He's heard and see people die by the blade and by poison, but emotions?

Of a sort, yes - it isn't unique to elves, although I understand it is very difficult to kill a human that way.

But... if the hurt to the spirit is deep enough, I have seen those who simply... stop.

[He doesn't quite get that, but he's not exactly great with ~emotions~ anyway.]

Having a heart sucks.

[He sighs in exasperation.]

I've never seen a human die of grief, but most of the humans I knew were killed in battle. [He huffs and scratches his head, thinking.]

But that sounds like a shitty way to go - dying 'cause you're so sad. Sorry you had to see that.

[ That startles a laugh out of Maglor, bright and clear ]

It can, at times, but it has brought me much joy, also, and I would not exchange those good times for the anything.

Mm, and it is well - the circumstances were not... good ones. It is perhaps kinder, this way.

[Ugh, he got laughed at. Doudanuki's face immediately sours and he drops his chin into his hand to mask it.]

Ain't nothing kind about dying from a broken heart. I'd rather go out with a bang, or I guess a snap, than just waste away.

[He recalls that happening a few times. Swords rusting into disuse, breaking because they weren't cleaned properly. The feeling of uselessness was overwhelming and it still ached, now that he had the memories of all his other selves gathered all into one head.]

Being as old as you are, I guess you've seen a lot of stuff though. Gotta make the years worth it somehow.

[ Only because he was surprised! ]

Mm, yes, and no - as I said, circumstances were... [ Maglor shudders, old, old pain woken in his eyes, and he determidely pushes back the shadows ]

They were not kind. [ Is all he says and then he shakes his head ]

Aye, that much is true. It can wear on a person - but it was not all bad, and I am glad.

[He figures they were 'unkind.' It's the sort of fancy talk he'd hear from some of the older swords because they were too refined to say, "It was a shitty time." But he also knows not to keep poking around where it's not wanted, so he leaves it be with a nod.]

Yeah, guess you're right. I got to fight again now that I got a physical body, so I can't really complain, even if it smells and does weird stuff sometimes.

[ Maglor smiles at him, determindedly banishing grief back to the shadows of his mind for a time ]

Bodies tend to - we are not so simple and practical as steel! But there are other joys that we have instead, and I hope the balance for you is worthwhile.

I mean...I like food?

[He could do without the aches and pains, the feelings, and the smell though.]

Ai! I wish we had a hobbit or two on board then, so that they could cook for you. But failing that - my cousin and I are fond of sweets, so you are welcome to try some, if you are ever nearby.

Haven't really had a lot unless one of the other swords was havin' tea, then I'd steal some and walk off.

[aka sit and eat with them for a bit, but eventually get bored and go train.]

I guess I'll have to come meet you sometime though. Gotta see what your skills are so I know I can trust you with my blade.
