I must say the good folk of this stop are very kind - they have allowed my brother and I use of the mines and forges here in exchange for some trading. My brother and I are going to be working on some proper swords - if anyone else is inclined to a bladed weapon, we are happy to make you one as well.

Grandfather, Fingon, you needn't ask, but your help in the forges would be invaluable - Maedhros and I manage, of course, but neither of us are... what we were. And we have neither Father, nor Curvo, nor Tylepe here to point out everything we are doing wrong!

Oh yes - not that this would stop him with Curvo, later. But fortunately he never lost Curvo! But Huan, we felt, was the responsible one in their partnership.

I guess getting scolded for leaving your sibling in the woods should really only happen once. If the lesson didn't stick, then you'd have a real problem.

Was Curvo-san more active than the other?

Not really - but... something about him and Tyelko... they just clicked. Poor Moryo! He loved them both so much, but from a very early age, Curvo followed in Tyelko's shadow, and Tyelko doted on his every word, and it remained so as they grew. Mother used to laugh that the only two who could settle Curvo were father and Tyelko, and so she could devote her time to other pursuits.

[Ah...a mother. He wonders what that would have been like.]

What a lucky thing! Are they all very close in age?

Mm, for elves we are yes - I think... the calculations are a little inexact, but there were roughly about sixty or seventy years between most of us, more in some cases, less in others. But none of us had more than a century in between us and the next brother, which is somewhat unusual.

You must have very long lives, to think a century is a short time period.

Elf. [ Maglor supplies for him ] Yes - that is what humans have always called us. And we are... well, I suppose we are as good as immortal, in that sense, for we do not age as you do, for we are tied to the world, and will die only when it does, although we can be slain as easily as any other. We do not reach our full maturity until our first century, you see, and most parents will allow their children to reach at least that, for bearing a child is a wearying business. But my parents were always ones to do things differently.

That's fascinating... I've never heard of an elf before.

[They certainly didn't have any in Japan at least. Certainly they had immortal creatures, but they were usually animals that grew powers after a long life.]

It must be interesting living for so long. Our lives must be but blinks in time and insignificant compared to yours.

But if "elf" is what humans call you, what do you call yourself?

We call ourselves Quendi, for the most part - it means "The Speakers" - for we were the first to wake, the first to speak, and to reach out to speak. So we are also the Firstborn, and some still call us that. But we are many peoples under that banner - those of the three tribes who left for Valinor are Laiquendi or Light Elves, although most call us Eldar - People of the Stars, instead, and some use that term for all of us, although it is not strictly accurate. But Elf is what we are all used to, now.

It is, a little like that, I suppose - but I envy Men, at times, who though you burn out swiftly, seem to burn all the brighter for that.

[Quendi. He can hear the sounds, but he isn't sure exactly how to pronounce them. But what beautiful names they have. The Eldar, the Laiquendi, People of the Stars, the Firstborn - he's never heard so many names for one people before.]

Do you ever get confused for which name is most proper to call yourselves? You seem to have a lot.

I used to! But I am a bard, you see - my job is to hold our people's stories - so I am fairly used to all of the names now.

Oh, you're a storyteller? Do you have many stories of your people then?

I'd love to hear some when you have the time.

And I do, yes, although many are quite long! I am always happy to offer them to any who would hear them, in truth. I am too vain to refuse!

But as a rough guide... well. I am now roughly about nine thousand six hundred, I believe. I can tell you the tales from before my birth, to now.

I don't think I have enough time to listen that far back unless I get a few snacks first.

I think you might need more than a few! But I can certainly abridge things to ... sample the highlights, as it were.

I'd be happy to hear the highlights then. Although first, I suppose I should gather up the materials you need for my sword. Perhaps while we're waiting for the ore to temper, I can hear a tale or two?

Then give me a day or two and I'll bring the materials by. It will let you choose your favorite stories to tell me, hm?

Oh no! [ Maglor wags a finger at him teasingly ] No bard worth his salt ever admits to a favourite! But when you come, you can tell me the sorts of tales you'd like to hear, and I will pick some out for you.

[He makes a false and overly-dramatic put-upon face. Nooooo, he has to chooooose????]

Eeeeeeeeh.... Well, if you insist. But I know you have a favorite then - you just can't tell me.

I'll be sure to think of what sort of story I would like to hear though. Maybe more about your family, hm?

Can't, and won't! Mm, I have a very big family! So there are plenty of options, there.

I think I'd like to hear stories of times you were at home together. Happy stories, maybe.
