[Like, you have to squint pretty hard. Sayid's tone isn't mocking though, or argumentative. Maybe just very mildly amused.]

You have military experience, then?

[John's uniform does sort of read military, but it doesn't immediately scream Revolutionary War to Sayid.]

Well, yeah.

[He nods, and rolls his shoulders a little.]

Sure do. Been in the continental army about 6 years now.

[Okay, well that rings a bell. He looks at John even more curiously.]

The continental army, as in the American revolutionary forces?

[He knows time is kind of weird, but that's...impressive. Also he's a little aware that "American" doesn't really apply to that army...yet...at that time...but it's a simplification.]

[It doesn't, but John's close enough to the end of the war that it sort of does, for him, and he can't help the grin that appears.

That's us, yeah.

I can see how adjusting to this kind of environment would be difficult for you.

Checkin' out the library's helped a lot. And I've met a lot of people willing to answer my questions.

[it sure is. But he's dealing with it well enough.]

People tend to band together, in situations like these.

[Live together or die alone.....not that the situation is dire in exactly that way.]

Yeah, that's true enough I guess.

[He gives Sayid a grin.] I sure will. 'M John Laurens, by the way, if I haven't said it.

[He finally leaves the doorway to walk over to John's cot, holding out his hand.]

Sayid Jarrah. It's a pleasure.

[He shakes the offered hand with a grin, hopping up from his cot there.] Pleased to meet ya. Are you from America too? [Dang. It's still awesome to say that.]

I have spent time there, but no. I'm from Iraq [He pauses for a moment, and then amends that statement.] which I believe you'd know as a part of the Ottoman Empire.

....Yeah. Can't say I've ever been there, but it does sound interesting.

I can imagine. [A faint smile, for a moment.] Perhaps more interesting in your time than in mine.

[His homeland has....issues.]

[unbridles]

[So does John's, at this point in time.] Maybe! I mean, I've been t' Europe, but never got over as far as all that. I guess I won't, now, but I can at least read about it.

You won't?

[He looks faintly curious about what might stop John from traveling more than he already has.]

Yeah, uh, back home -- the last thing I remember was dyin'.

...Ah.

[Though he doesn't seem to think John is lying, he's certainly the first person Sayid has met with this circumstance. Though not the first person he's met who died outside their point of origin.]

That's...unfortunate. I'm sorry.
