I doubt they've got anything strong enough for SOLDIERs, but let's see what they can hit us with.

Cloud orders four shots of their strongest and slides two over to Zack.]

That's not half bad. I actually felt it a little-
[wait]
-nah, it's gone.
[TIME FOR SHOT #2
so how much money do you have, cloud]

[that probably won't get them drunk either. mako really sucks sometimes, man.]

[he figures Cloud isn't looking to be repaid for this sort of thing, but he really hates being a mooch. maybe in a month his wallet will be less full of mothballs.]

[Junon was the most memorable, and anyway, Cloud did invite him to his mom's house. So that was kind of one version of payback. He wonders if Cloud remembers that, actually.
He downs the third shot they order and it burns more pleasantly, his throat getting more used to this world's alcohol. Time and volume, he's hoping, will do something. He needs this apparently.]
Geez... it has been way too long since I drank.

It sucks. This sucks. He's not immortal or all-powerful but he can't even have the pleasure of getting trashed and forgetting for half a second that he died horribly like, two weeks ago. Ugh.
He drinks all but two and holds the third, sliding it back and forth between his hands along the bar counter.]
....You know, there was this bar back home near the Shinra Building, real trash heap that belonged in the slums- it kept a special order liquor in stock for SOLDIERs only. Stuff had mako in it, and that... that could get even a 1st so drunk they had to be carried home.

[And escaping taught him one thing- just about everybody has their price. It just never came to that.]

[When you live the SOLDIER life, you don't want to end up relying on that sort of coping mechanism or you'd lose your damn mind. Once was enough. Just when he'd really needed it.
(But an encore right now would be nice.)]

[Zack taps his glass against Cloud's and downs it, then another for good measure. Whatever's in this stuff is slow-acting, but he's starting to feel it, thank god. The fact that the bartender is showing some concern is probably a good sign.
Maybe if he earns some cash he can buy a few bottles for whenever they leave? This could come in handy.]
Cloud... y'know...
[........finish your sentence, Zack]
no subject
Zack doesn't continue so Cloud glances up to find his expression unreadable. It seems a little odd, to see Zack so conflicted, but also a little familiar? He's seen that face before, he knows it, even if he can't remember when.] ...yeah?
no subject
[Drinking was a mistake. He goes ahead and takes another shot anyway.]
I mean, I'm grateful. For... all this. Giving me a chance. I know it's weird, yeah? It's hard for you. I wouldn't blame you if you wanted to just avoid me. So... thanks.

...he still drinks them, though, zero complaints involved.]
Not kidding- I'm dead serious. [was that a joke? that was a teRRIBLE JOKE don't ever again] Some people would do that. And they'd be fine with it. And- and I'd be fine. [he wouldn't. he'd endure.] But you didn't, and... it means a lot to me.

[Everyone else is either dead or out of his reach. Betrayed him or blocked by those who wish him harm. He's clinging to what he knows with all his strength and Cloud has to know, has to know how important he is.]
no subject
And Zack...back home, he has nothing. He lost it all the same way Cloud did, and then what little freedom he had left, he lost that too so that Cloud would survive.
Cloud reaches over and thumps a hand down on Zack's back, turning to face the bar contemplatively. Zack's not really doing him a favor by trying to patch things up between them, so maybe he should stop treating it like that.] You'll have me as long as you want, then, [Cloud says quietly.] I'm not goin' anywhere.
