[After taking a nice hot shower to wash off a month's worth of dust, Varric is back in business being his nosy self. You bet he's checking the food stores to see how much of the crap he imported is still there, as well as the cargo bay because 1. that's where his desk is and 2. he had a buttload of alcohol there last time he checked.

But really, he's just wandering around so that he can check on his crewmates. He's worried by some of the things he's reading, and he hasn't even set foot on the planet yet.]

[Varric eventually settles at his desk and turns on the nearest comm console. Honestly, he looks like nothing's changed. At all. But there is a nervous energy in how his fingers dance along the edge of his makeshift desk, rustling some papers.]

Good evening. Did you all miss me? Don't be shy, we have all night. [Is his chest hair visible? Yes it is.]

I think I'm mostly caught up on what I missed during my exceptionally long beauty nap. [His brown eyes glimmer dangerously in the low light.] Something about peasant uprisings and dragons? Sounds like home.

I've a wonder if we could possibly procure some from the lands we visit in the future... 'twould provide a great variety. [ now that she thinks about it, she might actually start doing just that... ]

[ she's about as short as one. ] Then I am honored to be one of the few you have met thus far. And you... you are a dwarf, yes? [ far less hairy than the ones she's familiar with, but built similarly. ]

I'd say I've been keeping an eye open, but considering I just slept for three weeks... [WELP. He shrugs.] But I heard there's a library. Might be worth looking into.

[If she's under five feet tall she might have a chance.]

That's right. I'm a surface dwarf, so none of that underground shit for me, thanks.

[invigorates]

Oh? Where might one find this library? [ deets, dwarf bro, deets.

There is a difference in your world? All dwarves where I am from remain on the surface, unless mining for ore, I suppose.

I heard it's on the SS Bishop.

[He shrugs at that second question.] Dwarves are ruled by a caste system. You leave Orzammar, you generally lose your caste. But there's lots of ways to make a living on the surface-- and the beer is so much better.

[invigorates]

I may have to visit, then! If they will allow it... [ she hopes so. the prospect of a library is probably the most exciting thing that has happened thus far.

she tilts her head, curious as she takes in the new information. ] Interesting. And you said you are a storyteller - is that how you make your living on the surface?

[merchantprince]

I don't see why not. It's being advertised as a library, not a private collection.

[He smiles pleasantly.] Not entirely. I'm a best-selling author, but I'm also a very good businessman. Comes with the territory.

[invigorates]

A businessman could consist of a great many things - might I ask what type of business you run? [ oh you sweet summer child. ]

[Sweet summer child indeed... He just smiles at the question, like it's the most normal thing in the world.]

Oh, you know, a little of this and a little of that. I'm part of the Merchant's Guild... which is less like a guild and more like a pit of passive-aggressive vipers all trying to rip each other off.

[invigorates]

[ oh. ]

Sounds like quite the interesting 'guild,' [ since that's the word he used, and she can hardly think of something befitting 'passive aggressive vipers trying to rip each other off.' she'll just... take his word for it. ] And what about here, in the fleet? Are you in the same... profession, of sorts?

[merchantprince]

[His eyes sparkle in a way that is both mischievous and a little dangerous.]

I could tell you, but then you might end up with ten guards at your door asking if you know anything about a nug-wrangler's missing wife and five crates of smuggled lyrium.

[invigorates]

[ there are so many things she doesn't understand about that sentence. ]

Ah... perhaps it would be best not to tell me then. I fear I would be of little use to said guards - I do not even know what a nug is ... or lyrium.

[He chuckles warmly.]

That's right. Just pretend you don't know a thing.
