the veil is thin . . .

[ On the night of the 16th, the feeling of tension and horrid anticipation comes to a head. Everything stops when the sun goes down-- even the ever-present music in the hoppingest part of the city center. One by one, everyone turns their eyes to the skies. The young and old alike pour out of their houses, some in bare feet, and they point to the velvety blanket of stars.

It takes a second to find it, especially if one is unaccustomed to the starscape. But even a casual observer can see it.

A brightly-shining star, larger than the others, and growing larger.

An announcement cuts across all communication channels that encourages people to evacuate to the space station, but it’s clear that these are just people and they’ll need some help. Supplies, equipment, organization, there’s something for everyone to do.

Civilization is disrupted by a panicked stampede of people vying for limited seats aboard spacefaring craft. Within hours, there will be crushed glass, looting, and chaos.

The clock is ticking. Will you help? Or would you rather watch the dying gasps of a Singing Planet from a safe distance? ]

"My baby sister." [The girl points down.] "Nursery's in the basement."

[Thank goodness that Riona is here, or else Justice would probably still be trying to get the girl to accept her stuffed toy. Justice weaves through the house, only once stopping in order to pick up a set of colorful teething rings.

He looks down at them for a moment, like he's not entirely sure why he picked them up, and then downstairs, a baby starts crying.]
I think she wants these. [He shakes the rings before opening the basement door. He goes first out of deference for the fact that the Warden Commander has her hands literally full with a child already.]

[Riona follows him, brow furrowed in worry as they head for the nursery. Getting a baby out of here and to her parents was going to be exponentially more difficult than just a little girl. The kid has some autonomy, at least, but a baby is helpless.

The rings perplex Riona, but she at least assumes correctly that they're some kind of toy. She enters behind Justice, shifting the girl to get ready to pass her off.]

Here, trade you the girl for the rings. I'll get the baby.

[Sorry, Justice, but she is not letting you handle an infant.]

[This is probably for the best, but Justice doesn't know if he's any more qualified to handle a small child over an even smaller child.

The girl grimaces as she looks at Justice, and Justice eyes her warily, like he's about to pick up a wild animal. He passes the rings to Riona and then takes the girl very carefully, as though she were made of glass. He doesn't know how to hold her but he knows that he doesn't want to drop or hurt her, so he holds her awkwardly away from him in a position that's uncomfortable for both of them. The girl rests her arms on his wrists.]
"You don't hold kids much, do you?"

No, I do not.

[Riona leaves them alone for a moment as she walks over to the crib, shaking the rings at the baby. She smiles widely as she coos.]

It's okay little one. Look, I have your rings.

[The baby reaches for them and Riona lets her grab them. That seems to calm her down, but before Riona goes to pick her up, she happens to glance over. And that's when she sees Justice holding the girl out awkwardly. She sighs.]

Hang on sweetheart.

[She stalks back over to the kid and Justice. Good Maker does she have to do everything around here??]

Here. You need to get your arm under her, and perch her on your hip. Like how I was doing it. [She grabs the girl again, but only to position her.] Like that. One arm under her tush, or both if that feels more comfortable. And yes, dear, you're going to have to hold onto him. I promise he doesn't smell and won't bite.

[The answer to that question is yes, Riona. You do have to do everything around here.

In Justice's defense, he has literally never physically interacted with a child in his life. It's always been in dreams. Or occasionally when they were dead and trapped in the Fade for some reason.

He watches Riona like a confused puppy as she demonstrates how to hold the child, and the girl, for her part, grimaces at the confirmation that she has to hold onto Justice. Then Riona hands the girl to Justice again, and Justice can only look a little like a frightened animal before he takes the child carefully in his arms.

He's slow and awkward about sliding his arms where they're supposed to be. The girl doesn't immediately hold onto him, eyeing him warily instead.]
This doesn't... break mortal rules about touching? [He still doesn't really understand those, but this feels like it should. He doesn't know this child well, but he's holding her close. He's noticed that contact is usually very limited between strangers. Are the rules different for children? Or different when one of the mortals has stubby legs and needs to be carried to keep up?

The girl just gets more skeptical.]
"Mortals? Are you a vampire? Is that why you look dead?"

[Justice shakes his head, turning to look at the girl.] No. I am a spirit.

"Does that mean you're a ghost?"

No, I am a spirit. I am from the realm of dreams.

[The girl looks increasingly skeptical, but she seems less afraid of him than she was before.]

[Maker help her.]

This is how children are normally held. Ordinarily I would say that you should not pick up a child without their consent but we're in an emergency, so that trumps it.

[She's also trying hard not to laugh at the little girl. You kind of are a ghost, Justice...]

The spirits where he and I are from are different than the ones you think of. Spirits back home embody an idea or emotion, like rage or joy. But he is a bit spooky like a ghost, no? [With that shit-eating grin, Riona leaves them be and heads back for the baby. She picks her up, wrapping her loosely in a blanket.]

There we go.

[The baby gurgles cheerfully, having stuffed the teething rings in her mouth. Justice frowns at Riona, but the little girl giggles, and that softens him immediately.] "Yeah, you're spooky."

[She finally leans her head on Justice's shoulder and wraps her arms around his neck. Immediately, he goes rigid, trying to process the new amount of contact.

Gradually, he relaxes, putting a steadying hand on her back. He can do this. He can do this.]
I can lead us to their parents. They're by the ships for now.

[Sorry Justice. Just saying how it is. You're a walking corpse.]

Take the lead and I'll follow. And we best hurry before they're boarded and we have to try and find them on that station.

[Yes, it's true, but are you supposed to encourage kids to see him as 'spooky'? Genuine question. He doesn't know.

Justice keeps a firm grip on the girl as he climbs up the stairs. Just as they pass the foyer, the girl reaches out a hand.]
"Wait, my gran's--"

[Justice doesn't pause. He opens the drawer of the table standing next to the front door, pulling out a crystal necklace and draping around the little girl's neck. She falls silent immediately, fingering the crystals.] If you wish for anything else, speak quickly. You will not return to this place.

[The girl glances sadly back into her house, but shakes her head, holding her stuffed toy close.]

[Well, if the shoes fits...]

It's all right sweetheart. It'll be hard for awhile, but someday you'll be able to make a new home.

[She wishes it would be easy, and that this girl wouldn't have to go through it at all, but there's no avoiding it.]

[The girl holds Riona's eyes, sad and afraid, but she rests her head in the crook of Justice's neck and he doesn't even go rigid at the extra contact. He just solemnly continues out the door, keeping the girl secure against his chest.

He keeps a clipped pace, frowning at the meteor growing larger in the sky. The girl catches a glimpse and her eyes go wide with fear, her fingers becoming white with how hard she clutches her toy. Justice feels the fear spiking, and he glances at Riona desperately, searching for some guidance on how to soothe a child even as he just tries.]
You will be evacuated before the meteor hits. We found you in time, and we will deliver you to your parents.

[Riona hurries along to keep up, adjusting the baby so she's resting her head on her shoulder. There's so little she can do to comfort the girl. Once she's with her parents, it should ease up. They'd know what to do. She wishes she had a more maternal instinct. Children flummox her less than they used to, but... chances are, she's never going to get the chance to develop that instinct.

Her somber musing abruptly cuts off when she hears Justice talk. The girl's afraid, no doubt. Riona smiles and walks up along side of them.]

It looks really close because it's so big, but we have plenty of time. It won't hit for a couple more days, and you'll be far away by then.

[The girl nods, but she still watches the sun with wide eyes. Justice searches the child's mind for any indication of what would calm her, shuffling through her thoughts with no regard for privacy before settling on gently patting her back. The gesture is awkward, but it seems to do something as the girl shuts her eyes and stays with her head against his neck.

The infant does not seem all that disturbed by the meteor. Instead, it giggles as it mouths its teething rings, then promptly throws them on the ground.

The girl speaks without even opening her eyes,]
"She's going to cry later if she doesn't have those."
