[Well... that was that then. Kai was gone, Ezri Dax was gone, Bones was gone, so now he was the last member of the crew that was around when he first arrived. He'd feared things would come to pass like this, but as soon as he saw that his quarters had moved from his own small bunk to the larger captain's quarters, he had to accept his fate.

And so he sent out a shipwide broadcast.]

...So this is Doudanuki Masakuni and apparently I'm your new captain. [Can you hear the enthusiasm in his voice? It's about as lively as a dead fish] So I'm gonna need a first mate. I don't plan on disappearin' anytime soon, but havin' someone around to help would be... [Well] helpful. Especially 'cause some of you are new.

And in case you're wonderin', I'm not human, so if you got human stuff you need help with, I ain't the one to do it. [a beat] Sorry.

[Voice: OPEN]
[Speeeeaking of.]

For people who knew them, Ezri Dax and Kai Gracen have both returned. Hopefully, they're safe and sorry for the late announcement, but... [Well, a planet was blowing up.

He clears his throat.] Things got busy.

Anyone got any tips on how to be a captain? Especially tips for a non-human who has to take care of a bunch of humans now?

Okay. Um, yeah, I'll be right over. And hey, maybe I can teach you what you have, so you know! You could taste test them! [and eat]

Yeah, sure. I'll keep the airlocks ready to receive a shuttle.

Most of 'em I understand - things like mikan and lemons. But that blue thing...

Not to worry! I have a volume on horticulture that I picked up a couple stops back. I bet your mystery fruit is in there.

What ship are you captain of now?

[That would help a lot. He can take care of plants, but he mostly only ever did what he was told before - weeding, watering, harvesting. It didn't include anything about crazy blue fruit.]

I'm on the Caprine and the garden's in the cargo hold. I can meet you at the shuttle dock and walk you over.

[NEW FRIEND!!! Who he can help! what a good day ♡♡♡

Sorey is in such a good mood he flies the shuttle over manually, which is probably not the best idea but yolo and such and he manages to dock without too much trouble, so there's that.]

Nice to meet you in person! Are you feeling better rested?

[He can see the shuttle flying over once the conversation has ended and he saunters down to wait by the dock as he promised. It isn't hard to get everything set up so Sorey can wander on.

When the guy appears, he raises a hand in a half-salute, half-wave. He's still dressed in his usual black and gray, decked in armor with a black Japanese katana resting on one shoulder. He looks more like he's ready to go out to fight than to garden.]

Ossu. Yeah, 'm fine. Sleepin' usually does it for a sword. You doin' alright?

[Buddy, u look p cool right now] I'm great, and-! [Whips out the book he brought, the title inscribed in one of the more common languages in this galactic quadrant.] I brought the book.

[he's p cool when he isn't being a half deadass.

He gives a thumbs up at the sight of the book, even if he has 0 interest in books. This one will be useful since he needs it to understand wtf is going in his cargo hold.

With a jerk of his head, he motions down the hall.]

Garden's this way. It usually grows all year round, thankfully, so we got a good supply of fresh food here. You're welcome to some if you want it. Justice doesn't eat so we got one less mouth to feed.

Oh, you don't need to worry too much. Even if the garden fails, we can get by fine with the stuff from the kitchen. It's just, uh...pretty gross. [Sorey prefers his food fresh, thank u]

Anyway, I have a garden too! I'm trying to dry up fruits and vegetables and preserve stuff where I can. I have a bunch of wild game jerky too since I go hunting whenever possible.

[He stops and gives Sorey a look - a garden he is entrusted with will not fail; even if he has to work himself to the bone, he will do what he's entrusted to do.]

It'll be fine.

[Then he continues marching onward, arriving at the cargo hold and the garden that takes up most of the space. It has a few little trees, some space for other fresh vegetables like tomatoes and leafy greens, herbs, and then the blue spiked fruit.]

I try to hunt whenever we hit planetside, too, but we're running low since I didn't get to the last one...in time. [Ugh, he hates thinking about the singing planet and everyone who died there. It wasn't a lot, but it was enough.]

If you want to use some of that blue stuff, you're welcome to it. I honestly have no idea what the hell to do with it. I've just been roasting the mikan and preservin' the lemons.

[Sorey's expression dims just a touch when Doudanuki mentions the previous planet before he recovers, brightening back up as he starts flipping through the book, strolling over to the edge of the garden.] Oh, I'm sure there's something you can do with it! Let me look it up, hang on...

[He noticed that slight dip in Sorey's mood and thinks he knows why. It was hard to move on from seeing something like that. It took Doudanuki a few days, almost a week really to recover from the strain of it all. But now it's just like any other battle in his mind - one won seeing how they saved the people, even if they lost a few of their own.

He crouches down, elbows resting on his knees as he waits, looking at the variety of plants in various stages of growth. He's got some new seedlings just starting to get to a good height and a few mature plants ready to bear fruit soon. Idly, he picks a weed out of the dirt and sniffs it. Is this edible?

...Eh? He sticks it in his mouth, makes a face, and immediately spits it back out. Nope.]

Found anything yet?

Umm...oh! [Sorey sets the book down, balancing it on the edge as he points to a picture that looks pretty similar to one of those blue spikey things.] Looks here like it's called a, uh...D'yobel? You can eat it, but the rind is really thick. You scoop the seeds out and eat those. Like a pomegranate, I guess?

[D'yobel....? Huh. Doudanuki tilts his head and then plucks one off the tree.]

Dunno what a pomegranate is, but if it's just a matter of slicing it open? That, I can do.

[He holds the fruit in one hand and grabs his sword with the other.]

Any certain way I gotta cut it?

Nope, doesn't look like it! Just, y'know. Open. [Makes a chopping motion with his hand. ARE YOU GONNA DO IT IN A REALLY COOL WAY, SWORD GUY????] Oooh, can you like, throw it up in the air and slice it open while it's falling?!

[Just open? Ha, that's easy.

Also, why...would he....

Well, yeah, now he will. Doudanuki eyes the fruit and tests the weight by bouncing it in the palm of his hand a few times. If he can cut a steel helmet, he can destroy this fruit tbh]

Yeah, if you think it ain't gonna make a huge mess. I can do that.

Yeah, do it! It'll be fine! [*has no idea if it will be fine]

[He hopes it'll be fine because here he goes.

Doudanuki tests the heft one more time, then throws the fruit straight up into the air. As it falls, he draws his sword and neatly slices the thing in two as it falls. Unfortunately, he can only catch one side of it and that is by stabbing it through with the end of his sword. The other half - well, he hopes Sorey is good at catchball.]

[Hey u don't mind that he's taking video of that do you

Of course it means the other half of the fruit just bounces off his chest and scatters sloppy seeds all over the ground, BUT AT LEAST HE GOT THE SHOT]

[Nah, he doesn't mind, but he is a little like "wtf man" when the fruit smacks Sorey and falls to the ground. Why didn't he catch it???

He swings the stabbed fruit to the side and then pulls it off, sniffing at the fruit and seeds inside.]

That what you wanted to see?

Yeah! [Hunts around for that other half to pick it up and see if it's still- oh most of the seeds fell out. Well, he can clean that up, no problem, he was doing more important things] It was super cool, I've always wanted to see that in real life.

[The floor is a bit of a mess, but at least half of the fruit is saved? He glances at Sorey's less than complete half and offers him the one off his sword.]

What, you don't have swordsmen in your world? It seems like it should be an easy enough thing to do.

[Hold on, he's looking for a paper towel.] Oh, we do! I don't really know a lot of them...or any of them. Oh, I guess I am one, but I couldn't do something like that. I use a dull sword usually, anyhow.
