Who: Doudanuki & everyboooooody rock your-- wait no
Broadcast: Yes
Action: SS Caprine
When: Oct 9
[Voice to Caprine]
[Well... that was that then. Kai was gone, Ezri Dax was gone, Bones was gone, so now he was the last member of the crew that was around when he first arrived. He'd feared things would come to pass like this, but as soon as he saw that his quarters had moved from his own small bunk to the larger captain's quarters, he had to accept his fate.
And so he sent out a shipwide broadcast.]
...So this is Doudanuki Masakuni and apparently I'm your new captain. [Can you hear the enthusiasm in his voice? It's about as lively as a dead fish] So I'm gonna need a first mate. I don't plan on disappearin' anytime soon, but havin' someone around to help would be... [Well] helpful. Especially 'cause some of you are new.
And in case you're wonderin', I'm not human, so if you got human stuff you need help with, I ain't the one to do it. [a beat] Sorry.
[Voice: OPEN]
[Speeeeaking of.]
For people who knew them, Ezri Dax and Kai Gracen have both returned. Hopefully, they're safe and sorry for the late announcement, but... [Well, a planet was blowing up.
He clears his throat.] Things got busy.
Anyone got any tips on how to be a captain? Especially tips for a non-human who has to take care of a bunch of humans now?

I'm new. And I'm also not human. But I know humans well enough. They'll be fine. I wouldn't worry about it that much.
[ If shrugs were audible... ]
Do you have any qualifications you want for first mate? I may be new, but I guess I'm interested.
Voice
Huh. Looks like we outnumber the humans now.
[But he still has to worry about them!!! No dying, humans. That's bad.]
But for first mate? I guess someone who ain't gonna blow up the ship or let the crew die. Good at takin' and givin' orders, willing and ready to fight for the ship if need be. We never had "first mates" when we organized squads actually so I dunno.

[ Humans are silly and will probably die, this is true. Better to keep an eye on the if you care, she guesses. ]
Those sound like pretty base-line qualifications. Maybe a human would be more suited for the task, if you're that worried about them. But if no one else offers to apply, I could do it. I'm pretty good at not blowing up ships or letting people die, especially if I put my mind to it.
[ WAS THAT A JOKE? WHO KNOWS, TOO DEADPAN... ]

Making sure none of you die is supposed to be my job - that's what the former captains always talked about.
[Literally the only reason he knows anything about being a spaceship captain.]
I guess you'd have to take over in case I up and broke or something. Back me up in case a fight happens, but otherwise yeah, if you want the job, you can have it.
no subject
Sure. I can do that.
[ She thinks about it for a second... then she turns on the video, so he can at least see who this new first mate's gonna be. You know, just in case that somehow makes him want to rescind his offer. Or something. ]
You can call me Jacqli. I'm a reyvateil - a construct specifically for song magic. I'm also, apparently, the engineer for the ship.
> video;
Doudanuki Masakuni - you can call me Doudanuki or Doutanuki, they're about the same. I'm a tsukumogami.
[he gives the camera a half-salute. Sup, first mate.]
Were you affected at all by the singing planet? It made me go crazy.
no subject
He salutes her, and she returns the gesture - also halfway, a little bit lazy. Sup, captain. ]
Tsukumogami... That's not a term I'm familiar with. [ But she knows how to use context clues at least! ] Are you a kind of spirit, then?
[ Oh god, the planet. She scowls a bit. ]
Ugh. Yes. It was loud, and its emotions clouded every thought I had. Very rude.
no subject
Pretty much - I'm a spirit that lives in objects and becomes their soul, which in my case is a Japanese sword.
[BUT UGH THE PLANET. Let's complain.]
Yeah. It made me paranoid and it all got worse when I went to the planet's surface. It was loud and it felt like needles in my head.
no subject
Terrible. I wasn't on the planet's surface for long, but while I was, all I could hear was it screaming in my mind.
no subject
[He lets out a sigh]
Made me so paranoid I avoided the crew for the entire time we were there. Probably why we didn't meet until now.
no subject
[ She actually sounds genuinely sympathetic. Will wonders never cease! ]
I noticed it was slowly beginning to heal as we left. Which, in that case, I'm glad we're farther away - just in case it wanted to panic about something else.
no subject
Hn, thinkin' about the amount of energy it'll need to expend to heal itself, hopefully it won't be in any shape to panic for at least a hundred years or more.
[And they'll be out of the planet's reach looooooong before then.]
Not all the singing planets are like that though. Some of 'em aren't so bad.
