[ Of all the places he could have started at, Carl goes for the setting that reminds him of home the most. Not their current home, but back in Georgia, where the weather was hot and humid most of the year, and palm trees could be found if you looked in the right places. He walks along the path at a slower pace, just enjoying the quiet by himself and the sounds of birds up in the trees. No sound of walkers groaning in the foliage, nor any other indications of people nearby. It's peaceful, for once.

The further along he gets, he happens to run into the Iron Bull. Carl forgot how big he was, and it's startling enough that his hand reaches briefly to the knife strapped to his leg before he remembers himself. A knee-jerk reaction to the unexpected. He should have gotten used to that by now, but habits hard-learned are the worst to get rid of.

He offers The Iron Bull a smile, which broadens as he tucks it into his eye patch. It's a sight to behold. ]

I don't think I've ever seen one before. I dunno.. I'm kinda bad with plants and flowers.

[If Bull was honest, he was glad the kid showed up. The sorts of thoughts he was having usually ended in him needing to beat the shit out of something...or vice versa. Either way, it wasn't something that was going to happen here, and Carl was a good kid.]

I only know what it's called 'cause my Tamassran liked 'em so she kept 'em around. They usually grow pretty deep in the jungle.

[He turned to he could continue chatting with Carl, but leaned against the railing of the nature walk.]

What are you doing out here, kid? Enjoying all the open air?

Tamassran? Is that like a teacher?

[ He enjoyed learning about the world that Leilani, and now Bull, came from. It's so different from his own by a long shot. ]

More or less. This place reminds me a little of home. Less jungle and more humidity. The palm trees are nice, I miss them.

Sort of. [He nods. Bull hadn't actually meant to mention his Tama. It always got complicated when people were curious. Still, the kid asked. He deserved at least a decent answer.] Tamassrans raise us, Qunari, with others our age. They teach us, take care of us, and assess us for our roles once we come of age. It's...yeah. Tamassrans are teachers. [Who decide who you're going to mate with, but the kid doesn't need all that information right now.]

Me too. [He scoffs and shakes his head.] How long have they had you on this show if theirs, kid?

[ He's a teenager and he's curious, so of course he's going to ask. So long as he's not overstepping boundaries, he'll continue to ask Bull questions about home. Or what home means to him. ]

Are other Qunari as big as you are? [ He thinks back on what Bull said, eyebrow furrowed. ] So.. they teach you and tell you your job? How do they know what's going to be best? You don't get a say in it?

[ Carl shrugs, making himself comfortable sitting on the railing opposite Bull. ] Almost two years.

Heh, nope. [He shakes his head along with his laugh.] I've always been a big guy, even by Qunari standards.

[He shrugged.]

They watch us, see what we're good at. They're our teachers, too, yeah. Sort of makes them pretty qualified to tell where our strengths lie, right?

[You don't get a say in it. There was that "personal freedoms" hang-up everyone seemed to have, like the Qunari were slaves or something.]

Not really, no, but it's just as well, because the Tamassrans are really good at figuring out exactly what you're good at, so when you do it, that's your job, it's what you do for the community. All that crap about "personal freedom" and choice...I don't know, I guess it works for other people. I've seen it kill a lot of people, too, and a lot of good people go to waste doing things that didn't suit them.

[He could only hope running the Chargers actually did suit him, because otherwise...gah, it was stupid to think about otherwise.] Shit. That's a lot time.

[But sometimes thinking about home was nice.]

So, tell me about the place on Earth with the palm trees.

I guess I can see why it's a good thing if that's what they're there for. Who won know better than them, right? It would help, not having to figure out what you wanted to do instead of just doing what you were good at?

People do a lot of shit because they're free to. Choice can harm as much as hurt.

[ He's seen it happen enough times to know. People get killed from their choices. Carl is happy to change the subject and offers a fond smile. ]

Sure. Georgia is the state I'm from originally. It's down south, closer to the equator, so it's hot and humid most of the year. It rains often, but usually not for long. Doesn't get cold often, and I've only seen snow a few times.

Shit, yeah it can. I mean, most jobs have choices, too: who to interrogate, where to scout, what to say at a meeting. Just because you're doing a job someone else gave you doesn't mean you don't get to choose.

And...finding what you're good for, what you're best at? It's...it's hard to explain ...to people who've never been there. [And now he's an outsider, too, a Tal-Vashoth, a soulless thing. If he could go back, he'd make the same decision, but that didn't make it any easier to look forward and, for the first time, not see a path through all the shit he had to walk through. He didn't know how to explain it to the kid, though, so at length, he just shook his head slightly, turning his interest to this "Georgia". It sounded a lot like Par Vollen, with the rainy seasons, the warmth, the humidity, though he'd never actually seen snow until he went to Orlais.

One thing did catch his attention, though, and he raised his eyebrow.
]

Hang on. South? It's warmer south?
