[The shopping district Sam eventually gravitates to is a smaller one, shady and with green spaces between the shops where people are free to relax and, apparently, talk about their favorite teams. Though Sam isn't much of a partisan, he ends up with a few purchases in (ironically) Brightbirds colors. He might not be wild about the purple, but he does like red.

This includes a new harness for the small snow leopard with him, who - amazingly - seems to behave well enough on a lead. At least until he gets a whiff of the grilled fish one vendor is selling and tugs Sam off in that direction, pulling him straight into the path of someone else.]

C'mon, T'Challa, calm down. [And to the person who's now tangled up in a leash and a disgruntled cat:] Sorry about that. He doesn't get off the ships enough.

ii;

[It turns out that they totally have flying competitions down on the plains, and although they look down on Sam because his gear isn't solar-powered, they let him sign up nonetheless, and Sam opts for an aerial obstacle course. He draws the line at adding purple to his wings, though, no matter how much they swear the paint would make them look so much nicer. It's bad enough that they get him into a bright purple and red Brightbirds jersey instead of his usual tactical gear.

Just before the competition, he can be found with the jetpack in his lap, one wing spread wide open as he checks on it. Of course he keeps everything well-maintained, but that doesn't mean he wants to leave anything to chance now.]

[Velvet doesn't know how she ended up tangled in a leash attached to a snow leopard. But she has regrets. Clearly, she shouldn't let her guard down.

She vaguely recognizes the guy with the leopard as someone who used to be on Rokurou's ship, back when Rokurou was still around. She'd respond to what he said except her focus is on trying to get untangled from the cat before she starts sneezing.]

Why is it always cats?

[Aaaand the sneezing begins. Cat allergies still haunt her even in space.]

Sorry!

[Sam tries to pull T'Challa away, but he just tries to rub up against her legs more.]

No, you can't do that, you dumbass, she's allergic.

[Sam Wilson, expert cat owner.]

[She hops back a couple of steps once she's fully untangled, trying to stay out of reach of the cat.]

They don't care. They do what they want.

[Which she can respect in general, but what cats want usually inconveniences her so it's exasperating.]

[personal profile] wingedman 2018-05-23 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've noticed.

[So does the cat's namesake, for that matter.

Once she's untangled, Sam reaches down and picks up T'Challa, though that necessitates taking another couple steps back for the sake of her allergies.]

You from the Fleet?

[She's still eying the cat warily but she stays where she is.]

Yeah, that's right. I'm on the Red Fish.

[ Kara has a sixth sense for cats, apparently, because she spots the cat, then spots his chaperone, and waves as she comes over ]

T'Challa? Is that his name?
wingedman: (50)

[personal profile] wingedman 2018-05-23 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh-huh. He's named after someone from back home. Just as much of a pain in the ass as the original, too.

[T'Challa, of course, chooses that moment to stop being difficult and instead sits down and looks thoroughly innocent. Because that's what cats do.]

More of a friend than a frenemy, I hope.

[ she crouches down to give the kitty some love ]

I had a cat growing up. His name was Streaky.

[personal profile] wingedman 2018-05-23 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Little bit of both, but more of a friend lately.

[T'Challa is, of course, more than happy to receive attention, and he flops over and shows his extremely fluffy stomach to Kara.]

This is my first pet, to be honest. He just kinda adopted me a couple systems back.

[ she will risk everything to pet the cat's tummy. which, since she's unable to be hurt, isn't risking all that much ]

I hope you're enjoying the company, though. He seems like he has a lot of personality.

[personal profile] wingedman 2018-05-24 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Luckily, T'Challa isn't the swipe and attack kind of cat unlike some cats the narration could name, and he purrs happily while Kara pets his tummy.]

Oh, he does. He would eat the rats - or whatever the hell they are - on the ship, but Steve went and named them, if you can believe that. After Jane Austen characters.

[Who wouldn't believe that of Steve Rogers, really?]

Jane Austen characters.

Really?

That's... uh. I mean, you like what you like, I guess.
wingedman: (41)

[personal profile] wingedman 2018-05-26 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure Steve's read Pride and Prejudice a few too many times. Which is sort of fair, 'cause there's an awful lot of downtime between systems and a serious lack of books on these ships.

[He's definitely been hoarding a few novels of his own.]

We should clearly organize a book club!

Might have to pass the books around a bit, but it's a good idea. Get people talking more, broaden literary horizons and all that. Especially with some of the weird alien books you find on these planets.

[Or whatever else the Fleet has to offer.]

[personal profile] takingkarabusiness 2018-05-26 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Right, probably not too many copies to go around.

What sorts of things do you like?
wingedman: (69)

[personal profile] wingedman 2018-05-28 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I got into the habit of reading anything that was around in Afghanistan. It was the same kinda situation there - too much down time, not enough books to go around. I'd absolutely read weird alien books.

[A pause, and then:]

I draw the line at Fifty Shades shit, though.

[Not because it's erotica, but because it's bad erotica. You gotta have standards.]

Air Force, pararescue. Did two tours of duty over there before I decided the life wasn't for me.

Well, still, thank you for serving. I can't imagine—I mean, sure, I put myself out there to save people all the time, but I'm bulletproof.
