[At last, the day has come: Festival Day! Once again, the Starstrikers have taken the trophy this year. But that doesn't mean members of other teams, or those who didn't play, can't celebrate with the rest of them!

There are parties everywhere. Ribbons, streamers, and confetti litter every major street in the system. (Remember what they say about glitter...) There is food on every block, and people cramming into shops to get in on the merch.

Don't forget about the reason for the festival-- the pet adoption drive! A large playground-type area has been set up on the Starstrikers' desert moon where people can play and interact with the lovable creatures needing new homes. Whether you're looking for companionship or just something to do, there's plenty to coo over! Every pet comes with an info card listing a fanciful name and a general description of their age and temperament. Maybe Sir Pringle the puppy or Marquess Mariana the fish can become your new best friend.

Sadly, the Fleet will be drifting in about a week... but feel free to party until then!]

Alright. That should-- [Wait. That wasn't an outright no. That wasn't that she would hate being on a date. That wasn't exactly a yes either, but it certainly wasn't a no.]

Wait. Does that mean that you wouldn't mind being asked on a date? [He's still trying to comprehend that anyone would be interested in dating him.]

I wouldn't ask for a next time to say no to you. [She reaches over to take his hand in hers.]

[Vash takes her hand in his. Momentarily a bit speechless, but smiling regardless of how he feels deep down.] You know, if you do feel differently in the morning? I'll understand.

[He's still having trouble thinking this isn't mostly alcohol driven.]

I'll probably feel differently constantly because I'm still in love with Winn, but... [She doesn't know what comes after "but". At least not a short and easy tagline that sums it all up. Especially when she's been drinking, but really any time. But she thinks Vash might get it anyway. He's supported her through a lot of it. Of course, she's spent most of her short life with someone and as far as she knows he's spent a lot of his long life alone, so maybe he won't get not waiting even if it's for someone that may never come back.]

It won't be because I sobered up though.

[If he was being honest with himself he was scared. Scared because so few things in his life go right without something going terribly wrong shortly after. Scared because he never thought the feelings he knew that had been growing towards Kitty would be reciprocated and now that it had he didn't know what to do. There use to be so many excuses. He had a crazed brother to deal with. He had an endless stream of bounty hunters after him at all times. There were all the other crooks that he's pissed off over the years with a vendetta separate from the sixty billion that his head was worth dead or alive.

There were still problems, just different ones. What if he vanishes like Winn? How could he do that to her? He didn't mean for this to go so far, but it just sort of happened. What about Winn? What if he came back? What would that do to Kitty?

And there was that always lingering thought: I will out live her.]

That's a pretty big but, huh? [But it felt so good to have a warm hand in his own.] Kitty, I'm not so sure this is a good idea but... [That but again and it still felt good. He gives her hand a gentle squeeze.] If you're sure? I guess we can just take things one step at a time.

How about a date? I'll take you dancing. I know a place not too far away.

It's a terrible idea. I'm really good at those though. [For so many reasons, most of which have already been listed. Of course she's more worried what it would do to Vash and Winn if Winn came back. She knows where her heart would go right now. Winn would probably never feel comfortable with her living on the same ship as Vash again. And Vash...it's just unfair for him. But it's been a year of hoping and that hope has waned. As much as she wants to be with Winn, she doesn't really think she'll ever see him again and just trying to move on will be rocky. But since when is she scared if things being hard?

She leans in to give him a quick kiss, figuring he'd reject anything longer since she's been drinking. But she hasn't really had that much. She's just kind of a light weight and sort of intoxicated off the dancing and the mood of the place.]

That was a yes.

[goldenglasses]

[She's right. He's still a little worried that he's taking advantage of her while she's at least still a little intoxicated. It still doesn't stop his heart from leaping nearly out of his chest at the kiss.]

Well, alright then! [He grins and offers an arm. She did call him a gentleman earlier. Even if it was followed by a lecture.] I believe I've offered you more dancing!

[She's definitely not touching another drop tonight. He's eventually going to have to believe she's sober again! Like, when she is which isn't now.

She smiles and takes his arm.] You did. I'm holding you to it.

Alright, but remember I never said I was a good dancer. So any embarrassment will be your own fault! [Although something tells him she won't mind even if he was the worse dancer ever.]

I'm prepared to disavow all knowledge of you and pretend you're just some weirdo bothering me. [He's probably right though.]

Good! Ground rules set! Lets go! [Hopefully Kitty is ready for the energetic way that he pulls her back into the club and onto the dance floor.]

[She was not! She goes along easily, but she thought he might continue to fight her on things. Apparently not on dancing at least!] We didn't even establish a safe word.

[He's caught between a laugh and a sputter. A safe word!?] D-Do we need a safe word for dancing? [Look at him start turning a bit red as he tries to not think about what safe words are usually for.] Okay then. Uh-- Spatula! That's the safe word!

Unless you've gotten really bored with the basics with the long life span and all I doubt we'd need one for anything. [Except maybe this conversation?] Spatula is good though. Also, fun to say.

No! Not bored with the basics! Besides we don't have places to dance like this one back home! So most of this is all new to me!

And I thought it was fun word to say too. Should we need it. [Said with a wink. No, he does NOT think it will be needed.]

[She laughs like he made a joke. Obviously she was talking about sex, right?] Yes. We'll just have to be careful around making pancakes together.

[She was! It just went right over Vash's head. Or at least he allowed it to sail over his head because if he continued down that trail of thought he's worried where it will end up.]

We can do that pan flip thing instead! I watched a chef do it once! Flipped a pancake just by using the pan!

[Probably at awkward virgin depot.]

Impressive. You're going to set our ship on fire if you try it, aren't you?

[NOOOO! MY SECRET!]

I promise to put out any fire I start before it gets too bad.

[She definitely has no idea because someone over a century old has probably had five times the dating history she's had at least, right? Somehow she's seen his moves and still assumes this.]

No fires!

A little bit of fire. Just a little.

[She sighs and dances closer.] What am I going to do with you?

[goldenglasses]

[He grins cheekily and laughs.] Lock me in a broom closet? You can even store me upside down and no one would even notice!

And this is the style you choose. [She shakes her head at him and then gives him a considering look as she thinks about kissing him again.]

I think it makes me look dashing. [She can certainly try if she wants, but he will not let things go far this evening.]
