Meanwhile on the loveboat (mingle log)

[If there's anything this freaking ship loves, it's food. Somehow, a dinner got planned to welcome the new member. And then other people got invited. And then the dinner pretty much turned into a party with a lot of food. Needless to say, Kairi has been very busy preparing food all the day for this.

There's a lot of meat, per the captain's request. But there's also veggies, some fruit, pasta, and even brownies! There are also two pizza pies. Basically, Kairi just cooked a bunch of food and hoped it would be enough, as she had no idea how many people were coming.

SO DIG IN, BLUE FISH AND GUESTS. Also mingle and be social and all that jazz!]

[He looks at her, quiet and peaceful and serene and expectant.

And... maybe his eyes are glowing slightly as he basks in her presence?]

You feel like- He's the same. Good. Fundamentally unshadowed. Just... good.

[She'll revisit that bit about Slay in a moment. Right now, she's a tad more focused on the other thing.

Unshadowed/i>, he said? Then he IS sensing what she thinks he is. Suddenly, she feels self-conscious. She's never had to explain this to anyone yet, not even her crew mates.]

Can you... sense what's in other people's hearts? I'm... if it's what I think it is, you're sensing the Light in my heart.

[Her voice has dropped considerably as she's gone on. Clearly she doesn't want people overhearing this.] Most people have a mix of Light and Darkness in their hearts. Some have a lot of Light, while some have a lot of Darkness. But there's always at least a little bit of the other in their hearts. That's the case for almost everyone. Except me. Well, me and six other girls.

I feel hurt. Harm. Memories. Thoughts. People.

You feel a bit like Manolo did. Not the same. He was... brighter.

[He doesn't know about this Dark and Light. He knows emotions. Compassion, Despair, Rage, Justice, those are things he understands.]

You miss the islands, though the parts you loved best are with you. That's good.

[Where she's from, those are all things from the heart. So while she isn't entirely wrong, Kairi had in fact underestimated what Cole could sense. And needless to say, she's a bit boggled at all what he could pick up on. Especially when he mentions the islands...]

[Yep. Boggled.]

I can't believe you could feel that. But yes, you're right. So it's emotions you can pick up on? That's incredible.

Yes? No. Maybe. Emotions. Memories.

Tiny creature, antennae twitching, hobbles along behind us, giant yellow eyes stare blankly and yet I know, I know, I can feel him in there, gentle and fierce and familiar in my arms when I pick him up.

[He squints and looks down at the cat again.]

All things from the heart...

[Hollow Bastion, last year. She knows that memory, and his words make her recall it in her mind.]

That was when Sora-

[And she suddenly realizes that she hasn't introduced herself, or asked him for his name, or anything. She had just come to feed the cats, and then all this happened.]

I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for you to pick up on all these memories and emotions. If you need me to leave, I will.

When he lost his Heart.

I don't understand how that works, but I know what it was.

[He looks at her and he doesn't smile, but there's hints of smile in the corners of his eyes and the lightness of his gaze.]

I don't need you to leave. You live here.

It's a... long story.

[She shakes her head.]

I could leave you in peace. Having to see experience someone's memories like that has to be uncomfortable.

It happens with everyone. That's how I can help.

You don't need my help, though. You have what helps most already. I'm glad. That's good.

You don't need to worry about upsetting me. You won't.

[For a moment, she's silent, just letting his words soak in. Whatever this man is, he's a very kind person. She can tell from his words and demeanor alone.]

Thank you. What's your name?

Cole. I'm Cole.

[He looks up at her, tilting his head.]

And you're Kairi, who needs Sora and Riku, who are in the fleet. I haven't met them.

Nice to meet you, Cole.

[She nods.]

They're on the Bloodsport. Sora was asleep for weeks for some reason, and he just woke up recently, so it's no surprise you probably haven't met him. And Riku's... quiet. [These days, he is. He wasn't always that way.]

When you said the cats asked you for food... can you hear their thoughts, too?

[He rubs Slay's chest and sets him on his feet.]

Yes? No. It's not like. I know things. It's not like words.

Is River a friend of yours?

[Her brow puckers at his explanation.]

I don't quite understand...

Yes. She's like me, but not. But it's enough for both of us.

[He nods slightly, looking down.]

I know. But I don't have better words.

It's nice to find people who are like you in a way.

[Kairi will have to keep an eye out then, so she's not so caught off guard next time.]

It's all right. I don't understand, but I think... I think I get it well enough. How did you come to have such a power, though?

She's the first person I've ever met like me. At all.

[He shrugs slightly, rocking back and forth for a long moment.]

I don't know. How did you come to have a pure heart?

I can't even imagine what that's like. [Well, she might, but to really truly grasp it? Probably not.] But that's good you met her then. Some good came out of being kidnapped here.

...I was born with it, I suppose.

I don't mind being here. I have people I can help.

You just have it. I don't know why I have the abilities I do. I just do.

You're a very kind person for that, wanting to help. [With abilities like Cole, she could imagine someone wanting to stay away from people as to not hear all those thoughts, but he chose to help instead.]

I understand. I wasn't sure if perhaps you had learned them somehow, if it was some kind of magic. There are so many different people, with different powers and abilities around here.

I don't think I'm kind. It's just... what I am. I want to help people. I can't do that unless I'm near them.

No, not magic. It's part of what I am.

That might be true, but to those who've you helped, I'm sure they think differently. The motivation doesn't always matter, so much as the action.

[She nods, a lengthy pause following before she asks:] What are you, exactly?

They usually don't think about me. If I did it right, they don't know I ever helped.

[He's quiet, contemplates the question and her and decides she won't be angry.]

I'm a spirit. But I have a real body, all of my own.

They don't... know?

[The question hangs, but somehow it makes a little more sense after he explains what he is. Or at least, she's sure his being a spirit has something to do with it.]

Wow, a spirit? With your own body... [She has so many questions, but she realizes she's been asking him a lot of stuff, and she feels bad.] Obviously you're a good spirit, then. At least, the cats certainly think you are. I've never seen both of them hang around someone at the same time, except for Hawke.

I'm Compassion. Animals usually like me. Alicia's getting used to me more than liking me.

In Skyhold, most of the animals would come to me. Except a couple of the rats, because I took Cassandra's locket back from them and they remembered.
