[If there's anything this freaking ship loves, it's food. Somehow, a dinner got planned to welcome the new member. And then other people got invited. And then the dinner pretty much turned into a party with a lot of food. Needless to say, Kairi has been very busy preparing food all the day for this.

There's a lot of meat, per the captain's request. But there's also veggies, some fruit, pasta, and even brownies! There are also two pizza pies. Basically, Kairi just cooked a bunch of food and hoped it would be enough, as she had no idea how many people were coming.

SO DIG IN, BLUE FISH AND GUESTS. Also mingle and be social and all that jazz!]

I'm not surprised Katara did it. She's idealistic, sometimes. Not as much as Aang, but it's there. She wants to help people at risk to herself.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, I find it rather admirable. But I understand completely why you're upset. There have been plenty of times where those I love have put themselves in harm's way and it somehow always made me angrier than if it was something they had no control over.

Ugh, I just wish they'd been more careful.

I know. And if you need to be mad at them for a little while, that's okay.

I'll be fine. I was just... worried.

I would have been too.

[He gives a small smile. ]

So how's our illustrious doctor doing?

[She sighs.] Still adjusting, but I'm better, now that we're away from Mor and that the fleet made it out of that fight more or less in one piece.

Yeah, we were all really lucky. I'm glad people are on board for cross-training. It might mean we'll be in a better chance of a fight if they ever show up again.

[dancingmd]

Me too. I've figured out some things on my own, since certain elements of starship design are going to be similar across cultures, but there's still a lot I don't know about this ship.

[alwayscomeback]

And the more we know, we might eventually be able to escape.

[dancingmd]

[Beverly nods in agreement. Escape is never far from her mind either, though the more she learns, the more she realizes what a difficult task it will be. Seeing those star charts earlier... Her eyes suddenly light up and she points at Sokka eagerly.]

Oh! This reminds me! I was in the Bishop's library earlier where Krista told me that you were interested in stellar cartography and had contributed some of the maps in her collection. I would love to try to develop a more comprehensive map of this region of space, if you were interested. I'm no expert of course, but I understand the basics of astrometrics.

Oh man, really? I mean, I'm pretty good with maps, but these are all new to me. It's not the same as travelling on land. I really, really want to learn, see if I can figure out the lay of the land properly.

[The look on Sokka's face right now... he's reminding her of Wesley, which is mostly a good thing, but that perpetual pit of homesickness in her stomach deepens ever so slightly. Not that you would ever suspect, what with the radiant smile she's giving Sokka.]

I'd be more than happy to share what I know, though we'll probably have to do a little learning together along the way.

Hey, that works for me. It's better than staring at them hoping eventually they'll make sense.

[She laughs.] Not a particularly effective method of learning, no, as much as I tried to convince myself otherwise when I was at the Academy.

[Sigh. ] If only, right? It'd make everyone's lives way easier.

Maybe so... I'm sure plenty of other problems would arise for us though, if that were the case. Besides, I rather enjoy the learning process.

Me too. Learning is important and some people really don't get that.

You know, I think you would fit into Starfleet perfectly, Sokka.

[That gets a chuckle/.]

You really think, huh?

Absolutely. I mean, you'd have to go through the Academy first, but I have no doubt you would love it there.

So, what sort of stuff do you have to do in the Academy? [Look, he's interested. He knows he already has a path set for him, but hey, it's nice to think about other options once in a while. ]

It somewhat depends on what your focus is. Since I was in medicine and wanted to be a surgeon, I was in school for longer than usual - eight years. Most cadets are there for four years and there are any number of majors you can go into: engineering, linguistics, anthropology, physics. Starfleet needs all sorts of people. So you'd have classes related to your major, but everyone takes general education courses as well. Thus, why I know the basics of stellar cartography, even though astronomy is not my specialty. That way, I'm not at a total loss if ... well, if a situation like this arises, where I am without access to the specialists. And of course, every cadet is trained in basic ship's operations, combat, survival skills, and the like.

Man, that sounds so cool. We don't have anything like that where I come from. ...Not in the Water Tribe, anyway.
