[ -- That catches her off guard, and she blinks for a moment, before she actually genuinely laughs ]

[Joseph's face screws up in mild irritation because he's confused. Why are girls like this?]

[ino]

[ She's still laughing when she responds. ]

I'm not going to hit you for not knowing very many interesting girls.

[Joseph wrinkles his nose.]

It's hard to tell what you won't hit me for.

[ino]

I hit you one time, and it was because you were obviously checking me out.

Yeah, but you keep getting irritated with what I say. I don't know what your limit is.

[But he's guessing it's not very high.]

You keep saying stuff that's irritating, that's why! Like asking a lady about her age and stuff ...

[ But she huffs ]

Your nose isn't broken, is it?

[ It doesn't look like it is, but she wouldn't be able to tell for sure without touching him ]

I wouldn't have asked if I thought you were that much older than me. I'm not that stupid. [He kinda almost is though.] You're way too young to start getting that sensitive about your age.

My nose is... [He frowns.] Hey, why are you only asking now?

Look, it's a sore subject, alright? I shouldn't look this young normally, but there's like, this curse thing that makes me look sixteen.

[ Because she's terrible and assumed he could handle it, but since he brought it up again, maybe it hurts ...

It's fine. It doesn't look broken, does it? I've taken harder hits to the face than that...

[Although really now he's just burning with undying curiosity (out of concern) about this whole curse business. But she said it's a sore subject, so he'll just pretend like he didn't hear it at all. Much better for him to start fretting about his personal appearance as he touches his nose. No, it smarts a little, but that doesn't feel broken.]

[ She'll lean in a little closer for a better look ]

Well, no, but sometimes it'll start swelling anyways ... it doesn't look bad, though.

[He's bordering dangerously close to sulking.]

You're not just saying that?

[ino]

[ A bit of an exasperated sigh, but she smiles ]

Yes, I'm sure. [ She'll turn to reach into the bag she's got stashed by her chair, and pulls out a compact mirror for him to use ] See?

[He takes the offered compact mirror and for a brief moment he is inspecting just his nose. But then he's checking the rest of himself out in the mirror, even adjusting his hair a little before he has a satisfied smile.]

You could have just said I'm handsome as always, [he says as he hands it back to her.] That would have put my mind to rest easy.

[No, he cannot stop goofing off for more than a few minutes at a time. Why do you ask?]

[ She doesn't mind the checking himself out in the mirror -- after all, she does the same thing. But when he comments, she gives him a flat look ]

I wouldn't have said that in any situation.

[nextlineis]

I know, I know. You're awful stingy with your compliments. [He sighs. A minor bruise to his ego; he can bear it, if only just so.] But the day I do receive one, I promise I will cherish it for the rest of my life.

I'm not being stingy! I have a boyfriend, I'm not gonna go around calling other guys good looking.

Oh c'mon, it's only the two of us. Who am I gonna tell?

[ino]

How about I call him up and tell him you said that?

[ Not that Tadashi would actually do anything, he's too nice, but still ... ]

Nah, you wouldn't do that. You're not that kind of person.

[Joseph grins. He's always prided himself on being able to read people pretty well even without knowing them all that well. He thinks he's got a pretty good handle on the sort of person Ino is already.]

Like I need to? It's obvious just from talking with you for five minutes that you're protective, especially about the people you care about. Repeating that you have a boyfriend hasn't had anything to do with you or me. Some might see it as insecurity in your relationship, but since you've been so steadfast, you're protecting him.

I don't know the sort of guy your boyfriend is, so I can't say how he'd react exactly, but it'd probably only end up hurting him regardless of how he chooses to handle it. And that's why you'd never tell him. Unless of course it was to spare him from more pain than that.

[ Oh, he does. And he's completely right. But she wasn't expecting that from a guy who wants to brag about how little he thinks, so she gets a little flustered. ]

Or maybe I'd tell him so he'd get annoyed enough to come over and really break your nose this time.

[Joseph just gets a touch more smug. He knows he's right even if she's trying to deny it a little.]

You don't really expect me to believe that, do you? If you wanted my nose broken, you wouldn't need your boyfriend to do it. You'd handle it yourself.
