After a moment of silence with Clay watching the ocean (because he loves it like this, it's dark and mysterious just like the space he so loves), he can kind of pick up on the vibe that's going on here. He's not like Apollo; he doesn't pick up on the little details another person might be showing, and it's not easy for him to figure out the atmosphere when things go silent. Still, he does notice this, and he leans over to bump his shoulder against Commander's briefly.]
So, like I asked earlier. What's up?
no subject
... Some things have happened over the last two months. Things regarding my home, and... apparently other versions of it. I wanted to talk to someone, but when I sat down to think about it, you were the only one I could come up with to talk to that wasn't... him.
[james buchanan barnes. bucky. something so familiar, so far away.]
no subject
He feels honored, being a person he could talk to about this. He's not sure who... him is, but he figures Commander will probably get to him if he's comfortable with it. So he takes a step back, then sits, legs pulled up and arms resting on his knees.]
Okay... I'm listening.
no subject
... Back home, I'm what's called an Asset by the organization that heads the world. All-in-all, my job is to keep the peace, but I'm a top-priority weapon, too. I do my PR thing, but I also do things that are... [he shakes his head.]
That's not important. If you've met there, Natasha Romanoff and Bucky Barnes have been running me into the ground since day one. They're not from my version of our world, and they're convinced I'm this "Steve Rogers" person. They say I don't remember being him.
[and it doesn't stop there, but he needs to collect his thoughts.]
no subject
But before he can think too much about that (he's not even sure he wants to), Commander brings up a name he knows. "Natasha"... the redhead, right? And Clay lifts his head up again and listens more carefully. So... In their universe, he's Steve Rogers, but it sounds like Commander doesn't identify as him. That makes sense; if Apollo showed up and started calling him Daichi or something, he isn't sure he could get behind that.
So he nods, though Commander probably can't see it. Even Clay can tell that he's not done yet, but he doesn't want to interrupt and possibly throw off his line of thought.]
no subject
... They're wrong about me. Even if I ever was this "Steve" person, I'm not now. But that's not even the biggest problem.
[he sighs, looking down at clay.]
I don't have a name, Clay.
no subject
[Of course, that's obvious; Commander's a title, not a real name. It seems like such a silly thing. Having a name shouldn't be a big deal, but everyone and everything has names. The first thing scientists try to do when they discover something new is give it a fitting name.
He wants to say it doesn't matter, but it does. It's basic human instinct to give and have some kind of name, a sense of who you are, even if it's small.]
I was wondering about that... Do you want one? If you went this long without one...
no subject
That's why I called you here. I was hoping you could help.

[he sounds frustrated and defiant, but he takes a moment to breathe. his tone softens, and he logs at him again.]
I trust you.
[to talk to, to help him decide this, to lean on, however slight. he thought about it a lot. clay is the only one here.]
no subject
That's... a big thing to think about, you know? It takes weeks for some people to think of a name for something.
[Still, he can't help the smile coming up; Commander trusts him with this, something as huge and important as this. It's... incredibly touching, and he pulls his visor down over his eyes to hide a bit of the redness in his cheeks as a result. It's a warm feeling that spreads to his fingers and toes, and almost makes him choke up a bit. But only almost.]
But... yeah. I'll do it. I'll help you find a name. [He tilts his visor up to give a somewhat shy smile.] So, um... Anything specific? Nothing Steve-like, I'm guessing?
no subject
Yeah. As far from it as I can get.
[they won't get their way, as far as he's concerned.]
no subject
[Phew. This'll be a doozy, and Clay's not even sure if he'll think of something right away. He's certainly not thinking of anything now. It kind of feels like there's a spotlight on him, like he needs to blurt out a name and do it right now. But this is important, so he doesn't want to rush it...
So, with a sigh, Clay leans back until his back is against the sand, fingers laced against his sternum as he looks up at the night sky. The stars look so different than they did back home, which is no surprise at all. It's a totally different perspective when you're on another planet entirely.]
... You wanna know how I got this? [He taps the bandage on his nose. If Commander can reveal so much to him, then Clay can too, while he thinks of a name.]
no subject
I'm all ears.
no subject
I got it when I was thirteen. Mom and I were just coming back from the Orange County Astronomer's Club. I don't remember much about it, actually. One minute, I was talking to my mom, and she was... she was beautiful. Laughing and smiling about something I said.
[Tap tap tap.]
Next thing I knew, I woke up in the hospital with a bunch of bandages around me. [He lets out a sigh, though he refuses to take his eyes off the stars.] They told me a drunk driver hit us from the oncoming lane... and that mom didn't make it. [Taptaptap.] Apparently, a piece of the windshield cut my nose pretty bad, and it turned into a scar that'll never go away. I guess it's a really bad metaphor, or something like that.
no subject
[it's something he's always thought, despite knowing that his arm is the only scar he'll ever have. hydra's technology with the tesseract is unimaginably streamlined. between his own experimentation and their facilities, commander has never needed to worry about anything leaving scars.
[with the paranoia he's been slowly feeding lately, his statement I'm response is the real terrible metaphor.]
I'm sorry about your mother. I can't imagine how much that hurts.
[that nagging voice in the back of his head says it's because he doesn't remember his.]
no subject
"On a road, not even knowing I was about to lose my mom?", says the more cynical part of himself that he doesn't really visit much. But yeah... he understands what Commander's saying, and he likes to think of it that way rather than a cruel metaphor.]
That was ten years ago, and I'm fine now. I mean... yeah, it hurt back then. I didn't know who else to turn to... my aunt was grieving on her own, and... [Well. Let's not talk about his dad.] Anyway. I've had a lot of help, and here I am now. [He lifts his head, finally, to give a light smile.] Sorry for the downer story. I just thought you'd like to know, since it's kind of always there. [He swipes at his bandage again - He hates the scar and he hates the reminder, hence the covering of it.]
no subject
[he sits up straighter, looking up at the night sky.]
It's a part of you. I'm glad you shared it with me. [and after a pause.]
I don't remember anything about my life before Hydra, but I've lost people. I've been around for a long time. Humans don't live as long as supersoldiers.
no subject
no subject
[that he remembers.]
I'm probably pretty close to 100, actually.
no subject
Wow, uh... [Dude. He did not peg you to be close to 100.] Yoooou age well.
no subject
no subject
Well, you do!
no subject
Trust me, I've had the best doctors my world could offer. I'll live a long time yet.
no subject
[If he got to live that long, he could see all the advancements that astronomers make, just how far humanity can push itself! But then he'd also outlive his best friend. Hrmm.]
