When We're Rollin Through the Wild Wild West

Who: Everyone! EVERYONE!
Broadcast: IF YOU WANNA
Action: Everywhere! EVERYWHERE!
When: Mid-September - Mid-October

[How's your ship doing, pardners? Is it still pretty damaged? Is it glitching out hardcore? Well, there is one place to land to take care of all that, and that's on a dusty old moon in front of a planet that no one wants to go to. On this moon, you'll find a civilization that looks a lot like one's stepped into a wild west movie, hardened cowpolk and mutant horses and all. Will you become a vigilante, hunting bounties and stopping gangs from doing their dirty work? Will you go exploring planetside, with a cowboy hat and a stalk of wheat in your mouth to complete the look? Good luck with that; there is no wheat. This town ain't big enough for all you flooters, but make it so! For the ratings!

In other words, it's a planet mingle! Get 'er done!]

[Her eyebrows go up in genuine surprise. It's a question she's never thought about, never had to. No one she has ever met has done such a thing. Even those who choose to reject the Federation - like the Maquis - they do so for a specific reason, not simply because they don't want to work or do anything with their lives.]

I don't know. Why would anyone do that?

[She muses on it for another moment. Vash, she supposes, would come the closest, since Vash has chosen profit over scientific integrity, which goes against everything Federation stands for, and certainly her smuggling would not be seen as a contribution to society. Yet no one would ever accuse Vash of just lounging around, doing nothing. So not quite what Allen is getting at.]

Disappointed, I would think.

[Oh...Beverly. While he's willing to accept the Federation somehow runs without currency, he refuses to believe the future has cured humanity of deadbeats. That is just too far-fetched.]

Because they're lazy. Or don't care about anything.

[He says it offhandedly, because it's not really the point.]

But right, you feel disappointed. Others might feel resentment or frustration, or worse, superiority. And all too often, people who don't make much or any money are made to feel like they aren't contributing, or are dead weight to society. It's not necessarily true, or right- but...that doesn't stop people from expressing those views. And if you hear it enough times, it truly starts to weigh on you.

[He knows he had to deal with it, growing up as poor as he did. The Ringmaster always condemned Red for not bringing in more money, denying him meals or worse. And after he escaped from that, his father was always one who insisted supporting yourself- walking on our own two feet. Maybe it was why he was so insistent on always helping out]

And so...I think that man, he was just trying to show you that he wasn't taking advantage of you, that he wanted to contribute to your good work, even if he had very little.

Disappointed or not, I would never refuse anyone healthcare. That's just... [Barbaric. She takes a deep breath.] But I understand what you're saying.

[Finally, she sticks the coin in her pocket. At the very least, she can put it toward some more medicine, for other people in need.]

It's an age-old problem, I suppose: how to stick to your own beliefs without interfering with or insulting someone else's.

I know, you're a good person who'd never do that! And I'm not saying we should either! Just...I don't know, if they insist on giving money, maybe you can donate it to some other cause that helps people?

[SOMETHING LIKE THAT]

Ah- yes. That is a tough one.

[She nods.]

I'm planning to put it towards buying more medication for my rounds. I don't think there are really any sort of community organizations around here, so it's the best I can do to make sure it goes back towards helping the people who live here.

[She gives him a half smile.]

It is tough sometimes, but at least I've had plenty of practice in dealing with other cultures.

[he smiles at her. Yeah, he knows she's had plenty of practice. That is what the Federation is supposed to be all about, right? And so many people in the Blue Fish come from different cultures too]

I think that's a perfect idea for that money.

Maybe - would you mind helping me with that, at some point? There are only a couple places here to get medicine and I'm sure the prices are outrageous, which is why no one can afford any for their families. I've barely used any of my ratings money so I don't think it'll be a huge problem but... I still don't really know what constitutes a fair price for aspirin.

[He gives a small chuckle and he nods]

Sure, I can help out with that. I'm pretty good at spotting when someone's running a scam.

Thank you! It'll be good to observe you too, as I need to get better at picking up on these things myself. After all...[After all, Allen might not always be here. She pushes that thought away before continuing.] It's an important skill to have.
